PETAR IVI. BULATOVICI-I, OF SESSER, ILLINOIS.
RAILWAY-SPIKE.
Application filed August 2S, 1916.
To `all flo/"1,0m t 71mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, PETAR M. BULA'ro vIoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sesser, in the county of `Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway- Spikes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of spikes primarily designed to be inserted in railway ties to have the heads thereof engage with the base ianges of the rails upon the tie, and the object of the invention is to produce a spike having means whereby the same will effectively engage with the wood of the tie to hold itself firmly in position when driven to within the tie.
In the drawing:
Figure l4 is a sectional view through a rail and a portion of a tie illustrating a portion of the improvement, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spike.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, l designates the rail, 2 the tie upon which the rail rests and 3 the spike which is adapted to be driven into the tie and to have its head engage with the base flange of the rail 1.
Specification of LetterslIEatent.
Patented May 29, 191%. serial No. 117,359.
If desired the underfaoe of the head l of the spike 3 may be serrated, as illustrated in the drawings, and the shank of the spike is inclined from two of its opposite sides to its end providing the same with an entering point 5. The point 5 from adjacent the straight sides of the shank is serrated longitudinally for a predetermined distance to provide outer comparatively thin limbs 6 and 7, and a central comparatively thick limb 8. The limbs 6 and 7 when the spike is driven into the tie oontacting with the iiber of the latter will spread away from the central limb 8 and as a result the spike is effectively held against removal.
A railroad spike comprising a shank having a tapered penetrating end which is slotted longitudinally a predetermined distance in a line with the straight sides of said end of the spike, whereby to produce outer comparatively thin limbs or members and an inner comparatively thick limb or member, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I`aiiiX my signature.
PETAR M. BULATOVICI-I.
