SEWING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 191 7.
Application filed December 7, 1915. Serial No. 65,479.
citizen of the United States, and resident of' Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahogaand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.` My invention relates to improvements in sewing machines and more particularlyV to sewing machines of the rotary hook type, such, for example, as shown in Letters Patent No. 1,005,250, dated October 10, 1911. The main object of my invention is to facilitate the handling of the hook and associated parts, such as the bobbin, bobbin-case, and bobbin-'case latch, both in their removal from and replacement in the machine, and
also in their adjustment relative to coperating parts of the machine. This object I accomplish by adapting and combining the said several parts for unitary handling and adjustment.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a sewing machine embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, partly broken away and in section.
As my invention relates only to the hook and associated parts located at the under side of the bed-plate of the machine, I have limited the illustration of the machine accordingly. i
As shown, 1 indicates the bed-plate, 2 the hook shaft carrying at its front end the at:- tached hook 3, and 4 the drive belt engaging a sprocket wheel on the rear end of thel drive shaft. .v 1
The shaft 2 is supported adjacent its Op,- posite ends in bushed bearings 5 and 6, which bearings as here shown are formed in a supporting bracket 7 detachably and adjustably connected to the bed-plate in substantially the same manner as disclosed in the aforesaid Patent No. 1,005,250. So far as my present inventionis concerned, however, the shaft 2might be supported in bearings formed or otherwise located at the under side of the bed-plate in any suitable or desired manner.
In accordance with my invention, the shaft 2 is transversely divided between its end bearings, as indicated at 8, wherebyV the front end thereof with its attached hook may be readily removed from the machine without disturbing the connection of the rear endnwith the shaft driving means. As a means for operatively coupling the shaft endsA` or sections to permit of such disconnection of the same', I have attached sleeves 9, 9,
to the adjacent ends of the shaft sections having overlapping ends 10, 10, which coperate to couple the shaft sections for rotary movement and which alsopermit of the front section being adjusted longitudinally of the rear" section for the purpose of positioning its. attached hook -relative to the vertical path of the needle n.
The bushing 11 of the bearing 5 is provided at its front end with a bracket 12 having two forwardly `projecting arms 13, 13, to` which is pivotally connected a latch 11 forholding the bobbin-case 15 and its contained bobbin 16 in operative position within the hook. A spring catch 17 for holding the latch 14: in closed position is also carried by the bracket 12, being connected thereto at 18;v The bushing 11, carrying by its bracket 12thev complete bobbin-case latch device, is connected longitudinally with the hook-carrying section of the shaft 2 journaled therein, by the engagement of its opposite ends vvithfshoulders on said shaft, one shoulder being provided by the hub 19 of the hook and the other shoulder being provided by the coupling sleeve 9, as shown. c The bushing 11, withA its connected parts as described, is removably and adjustably held within the bearing 5 by suitable fastening means. These fastening means as here shown, comprise a setscrew 20 carried by the ,bracket 7 for engaging the bushing to holdit :against longitudinal movement, and anadjusting screw 21 also carried by the bracketV 7 for engaging the bushing bracket 12 within a seat 22 therein to hold the bushing against rotary or turning movements in its support. This screw 21, by endwise adjust- 1nent,also serves to position the parts whereby the hook will ,be brought in proper relation to the path of the needle.
A By dividing the hook shaft in a manner to render it both eXten'Sibleand separable, and combining as a single unit the front shaft section and bushing with their supported parts, comprising the hook, bobbin,y bobbincase,.and bobbin-case latch, in the manner shown 4andrdescribed, it enablesthe several parts comprised in such unit, after being once properly adjusted to their position in the machine by the setting of the'adjusting screw 21, to be removed froml and replaced in the machine as often as desired without further readjustment, and also enables the hook and associated parts to be adjusted as Y f from the needle path, a shaft havingan attached hook journaled in said bushing and a bobbin-case latch connected to the bushing independently of said hook and both the shaft and the latch being adjustable with the bushing, and means for adjustably holding the bushing in a longitudinally stationary position.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination with a reciprocating needle, of a bed-plate having a support at its under side, a bushing carried `bv said support and longitudinally adjustable in a direction toward and from the needle path and having a latchsupporting bracket at that end adjacent the needle path, a shaft having an attached hook journaled in said bushing and a bobbin-case latch connected to said supporting bracketl and both being adjustable with the bushing, and means for adjustably holding the bushing in a longitudinally stationary position.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed-plate having a support at its under side, of a bushing removably connected with said support, and a drive shaft having an attached hook, aV bobbin, a-bobbin case, and a bobbin-case latch, all carried by said bushing and removable therewith from the bed-plate support, the said bobbin-case latch being mounted on the bushing independently of the hook.
' 4. In a. sewing machine, the combination with a bed-plate having a support at its under side formed with an opening eX- tending lengthwise of the bed-plate, of a bushing adjustably and removably seated in said opening, a drive shaft having an attached hook, a bobbin, a bobbin-case, and
a bobbin-case latch, all carried by said bushing for adjustment and movement therewith, the said bobbin-case latch being mounted on the bushing independently of the hoek, and means for holding the bushing and supported parts in adjusted position.V
side one` of which comprises a longitudinally adjustable bushing, a sectional drive shaft supported in said bearings and being extensible in the direction of its length and carrying a hook and bobbin at the end thereof adjacent the needle path, that part of the shaft carrying the hook being connected with the bushing for longitudinal adjustment therewith, and means for adjustably holding the bushing in a longitudinally stationary position.
6. In a. lock-stitch sewing machine, the combination with a reciprocating needle, of a bed-plate having bearings at its under side` a drive shaftsupported in said bearings and carrying a hook and bobbin at its forward end, said shaft being transversely divided between its ends and coupled by means permitting of the free endwise withdrawal of the hook-carrying end from the opposite or rear end, and means adjustably holding the hook-carrying end of the shaft in a longitudinally stationary position relative to the needle path.
