Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application led September 13, 1915. Serial No. 50,535.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, I-IAnnIET T. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marblecliff, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of garters of that class designed for use particularly in connection with the depending supporter straps usually carried along the lower edge of a corset and is designed to cooperate with these supporter straps to effectively hold the hose in position.
The main object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of Agarter wherein the hose engaging or clasping means are adjustable circumferentially on the garter bands themselves. This construction usually comprises a button or stud so mounted on the garter bands that it may be slid back and forth on the same to assume the proper position and the studs themselves are designed to coperate with the hose fasteners or eye pieces carried on the lower ends of each of the depending straps. This adjustable construction is provided in order that the attaching studs or other clasping means may be shifted to the desired position on the garter band itself in order that they may be in proper alinement with the depending straps. This arrangement is resorted to so that these straps may hang vertically and not in an inclined position when attached, since this latter arrangement tends to distort the hose, as well as add an uncomfortable feeling. Therefore7 by providing a c'onstruction wherein the distribution of the pull on the hose is vertical, this stress is evenly divided throughout the entire garter and the hose themselves are prevented from wrinkling.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure l is a view showing the application of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the garter member shown detached, and,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in perspective of one of the adjustable studs carried by the garter band.
In these drawings, there is shown a corset l which may be of any conventional type and shown as carrying a plurality of depending supporter straps 2 along its lower edge. These supporter straps are preferably adjustable as to length by means of the adstrapsl due to the assumption of various posi- 1 tions of the wearer, I have provided a garter band 5 designed to encircle each leg of the wearer. These garter bands are preferably although not necessarily made of elastic material and are also constructed with clasping means such as shown diagrammatically at 6, in order that an endless band may be presented. These garters are also adjustable in length by means of the structure shown at 7, so that the desired size may be obtained. Each of these garters is provided with a set of studs or buttons 8 designed to coperate with the fasteners 4 to complete the engaging means for holding the hose in position. These studs 8 are shown as being carried by tubular base members 9 preferably made of fieXible or textile material and slidably mounted upon the garter bands '5 to be adjustable circumferentially on the same.
It will thus be apparent that I have provided a type of garter which will very effectively hold the hose in position and will further prevent the wrinkling or distorting of the same. Further, by means of the construction of stud supports, these base members may be moved to any desired position on the garter bands to permit the supporter straps 2 to hang in their vertical or natural position. In addition to adding to the comfort of the wearer, the vertical disposition of these straps also tends to more evenly divide the strain upon the hose through the garter bands and in this way the hose are prevented from tearing or raveling, or forming runners or ladders. What I claim, is:
l. The combination With the depending supporter straps of a corset, and hose fasteners on the ends of said straps, of a garter band for encircling the leg of a wear-er1 and studs for coaction with said fasteners circumferentially adjustably mounted on said band, the arrangement being such that the hose lies on the outside of the garter band between said studs and said fasteners.
2. The combination with the depending supporter straps of a corset, and hose fasteners on. the ends of said straps, of a garter the outside of the garter hand between said i@ band or encircling the leg of a wearer, and studs and said fasteners.
studs for coaction with said fasteners ereumn testimony whereof I affix my signature ferentially adjustaby mounted on said band, n presence of two witnesses.
said studs beinO' the only means to eoaot with T said fasteners il their support of the hose and HARRIET TILNEY SHELDOB' being also the only means of connection be- Vitnesses:
tween said band and said straps, the ar- A. L. PHELPs,
rangement being such that the hose lies on BUTLER SHELDON.
