Description
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCUDDER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO JOHN W. HAAS, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
RECEPTACLE.
Application filed June 13, 1914, Serial No. 844,919. Renewed October 23, 1916. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Scunonu, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its primary aim to produce a receptacle which will be of simple and durable construction and which may easily and quickly set up from a knock-down o'r collapsed form in which last named condition the structures will preferably be for storage and shipping purposes.
Other objects will appear as my description progresses and the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which protection is desired as brlefly set forth in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of my invention reference is to be had to the following specification and the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the blank from which my receptacle is formed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of my receptacle wherein the bottom closure is elevated from its operative position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective illustrating the manner in which the closure is self seating.
Fig. 4 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing more clearly the construction of my receptacle.
Fig. 5 is a plan of blank similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1 showing a closure for each end of the receptacle.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of a receptacle 1n which the bottom closure is in position and the top closure opened, and
Fig. 7 is a similar view wherein both closures are in an operative position.
Similar characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The receptacle comprises side walls 1, 2, 3 and 4, the Wall 4 carrying a flap 4 to be adhesively, or otherwise, secured to wall 2, in an obvious manner, to maintain the form of the receptacle.
' The walls carry on their lower edges inturned flanges 6, to one of which is hinged, as by a line of fold 9, a bottom closure 8 for seating on the other flanges 6. The flanges Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
6 are joined to one another by fold lines 6', which constitute continuations of fold lines 7 joining the walls, and to the side walls by fold lines 5. The flanges 6, when folded inwardly against the walls, constitute a continuous upturned edge flange which, in conjunction with the walls, form pockets for the reception of the downturned flan es 10, 10' of the bottom closure. The side flanges 10 are connected to the side wall flange sections by triangular shaped spreader and retainer sections 11 which are joined to flanges 6' by fold lines 11 lines 11".
After the receptacle is arranged as shown in Fig. 2, the bottom closure 8 is moved downwardly during which operation the sections 11 fold inwardly on flanges 10 and spread or open the flange sections 6 from the adjacent Wall for the reception of said flanges 10 as shown in Fig. 3. The front flange 10 is guided to its seat between the front wall and its flange section by said wall 4.
In this connection it will be noted that the sections 11 serve to retain the bottom closure in position since, upon opening the closure, the side wall flanges 6 will be forced inwardly from their normal position, as is obvious.
The closure 12 for the top of the recep-. tacle is joined to the rear wall 1 by fold line 12' and carries side depending locking flaps 13 and an insertion flap 14. The latter is inserted within the receptacle to lie against the front wall, as shown in Fig. 4, while the former inclose the upper edges of side walls 2 and 3 and enter in elongated openings or slots 15 formed in said side walls. Flaps 13-carry hooks 13 toengage the edge of the slots 15 for locking purposes, as is apparent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of Amerlea, 1s
1. Ina receptacle of the character described, a body formed of one piece folded to constitute the side walls of a container, a continuous flange secured along the lower edges of and upturned within said walls, a bottom secured along one edge to said flange and provided with downwardly projecting flanges, said flanges fitting between the side walls and their upturned flanges, said downwardly projecting flanges at two sides of the and to flanges 10 by fold bottom being joined to said upturned flanges by a triangular piece which is an integral part of the downwardly projecting flange, and which is joined to the upturned flange along one edge, by means'of which piece said upturned flanges are automatically spaced from the side walls to permit the roper seating of said downwardly pro ecting flanges.
2. In a receptacle of the character described, a body comprising four side walls formed of one piece of material, flanges formed integral therewith and upturned within said walls along their lower edges, a bottom formed integral therewith and folded along one side flange, flanges along the other three sides of said bottom formed integral therewith, said flanges projecting downwardly and fitting between the side walls and the upturned flanges, said downautomatically space said upturned flanges from the side walls, to thereby guide the downwardly projecting flanges into proper position.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 1 0 day of March, 1913.
