Description

A. E. FENDRICH.
TOOTH BRUSH.
APPL| cAT|oN FILED ocT. 3o, 1915.`
ADAM n. FEND'RIGH, oF WEEHAWKEN, NEW *Jnnsnx Toorn-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
f Application led October 80, 1915.` Serial INo. 58,840.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known-that I, ADAM E. FENDRICH,
j' a citizen of the United States, residing at lVeehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented cerv tain new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact` description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y The invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes.
The object of the present invention is to improve lthe construction of tooth brushes and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive tooth brush adapted to brush the teeth with an up and down motion of the bristles of the brush and capable of also protecting the gums and of preventing the same from being injured by the solidy portion of the brush head.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sanitary tooth brushl of this chaiacter capable of easy operation from the end of the handle to produce a partial rotary `movement of the bristles alternately in opposite directions.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated'in thev accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim heretoappended, it being understood that variouschanges in the form, proportion and minor-'details of construction may be resorted. to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a planview of atoothbrush constructed in accordance with thisinvention, I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of` the same,
Fig.v 3 is a transverse sectional View on the-line 3-3 of 2,
Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4 1 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts' in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a brush member consisting of a bar of any suitable 4material circularjin cross section to rotate within a hollow handle 2 and provided at its outer portlon with bristles 3 extending over approximately one-half the surface of the outer portionor head 4. The handle 2 is of tubular form and is provided with a shank or stem 5 connecting the handle with anouter substantially semi-cylindrical shell 6 :adapted to form a ard. The substantially semicylindrical s ell has an end wall '7 which" may be secured to the shell after the parts have beenka'ss'embled or the shell may be constructed in' any other desired manner to enable the parts to be assembled.
. The outer end of the brush member 1 is provided with a recess 8 forming spaced Patented. May 2e, 1917.
shoulders 9 which are adapted to engage a I lug or projection 10 for limiting the rotary movement of the brush member. The shell4 or casing 6 is designed to be provided with one or more perforations or apertures 11 for draining and Ventilating the tooth brush.
.The brush member 1 is preferablv reduced at its inner end to form a neck u12 which passes 4through an opening 13 in the end wall or portion 14 of the tubular handle 2 and has secured to it an operating handle or disk 15 by means of Twhich .the brush member is partially rotated to cause the bristles of the toothbrush -to brush the teeth with an up and down motion. The operating device may be secured to the reduced terminal portion-or neck 12 in any desired manner and it will be clear that the tooth brush may be easily held in the hand with the bristles in position for engaging the teeth and that the handle member may be readilyv operated to cause the bristles to thoroughly brush the teeth and engage the same at thesidesthereof as well as the facesv 'of the' teeth.
In practice, the toothbrush will be provided with a suitable cover which may be constructed in any desired mannerand the handle may be constructed in one or more pieces.
It will be seen that the tooth brush is exceedingly simple in construction and that the shell or casing in which the brush head is rotatively mounted forms a guard and that only the bristles are permitted to come in contact with the teeth.
What is claimed is A tooth brush including a tubular-handle provided with a shell or casing of substantially semi-cylindrical form, a rod circular in crossY section and. mounted for rotary by said shoulders for limiting the rotary lmovement; in the tubular handle, said rod or movement of the rod. 10 bar extending into the shell or casing, bris- In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature tles covering a portion of the surface of the in npresence of two Witnesses. rod extending into said shell, said rod being ADAM E. FENDRCH. provided with a terminal recess forming Witnesses: opposite shoulders and a stop carried by the JN0. H. SCHUSTER,
shellor casing and arranged to be engaged GEO. W. AUFLINGER.
