To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. CAsoN, F512, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Railroad-Rail, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a rail road rail, and one object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind in which a removable ball may be used, the construction being such that the joint in the ball may be located to one side of the joint in the base members of the rail, thereby avoiding a hammering at the oints.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for interlocking the base members of the rail.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without cleparting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a rail road rail constructed in accordance with the present invention;

In carrying out the present invention there is provided a base 1 including a web 2 and a flange 3. In the upper edge of the web 2 there is formed a longitudinal groove 4 extended from one end of the base member to the other. The web 2 may be provided with ribs 15, if desired. At one end,
the base 1 is cut away longitudinally to form a lower extension 6,- and at its other end, the base 1 is cut away longitudinally to form an upper extension 7 the upper extension 7 at one end of the base 1 being superposed on the lower extension 6 of an adjoining base member. The lower extension 6 is provided with recesses 8 opening into the groove 4, and the upper extension 7 is provided with lugs 9. When the upper extension 7 is placed on the lower extension 6, the lugs 9 are received in the recesses 8, and thus the base members 1 are interlocked against relative longitudinal movement.
The invention comprises a ball 10 having a depending flange 11. The flange 11 is received in the groove 4, and is held to the webs 2 of the base members 1 by means of bolts 14 or in any other suitable manner. Noting Fig. 1 it will be observed that the ball 10 is not divided adjacent the meeting ends of the base members, but extends unbrokenly thereacross, the strength of the structure being enhanced greatly, and the ball 10 having no meeting ends located close to the meeting ends of the base members 1, and adapted to be hammered out of shape by the wheels of passing rolling stock.
The device herein disclosed is so constructed that the joints will not be hammered down and depressed below grade.
One advantage of the structure forming the subject matter-of this application is that when it is used on a street car line, there is no necessity for tearing up street bed when it is desired to insert a new rail.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A rail road rail comprising a pair of alined base members each including a web and a flange, the webs being provided in their upper edges with alined longitudinal grooves, the base members being cut away longitudinally at their meeting ends to form a lower extension on one base member and a superposed upper extension on the other base member, one of said extensions being provided with recesses communicating with the groove thereof, and the other of said base members having lateral lugs received in the recesses; a removable ball extending as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaunbrokenly across the meeting ends of the ture 111 the presence of two wltnesses. base members and provlded wlth a depending flange received in the grooves; and CHARLES OASON means for holding the ball on the base rnem- WVitnesses: hers. 7 ROBERT F.
