Be it known that I, Gnonen A. .ToHNsoN. a citizen of the-United States. residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in High-Capacity Friction Spring Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, ele'ar. concise, and exactdescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingr a partiof this specification.
This inventionl relates to improvements in high capacity friction spring draft rigging.
'An object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway cars of high capacity and which will have an easy graded action under both buff and draft.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and'devices and in the novel combinations ofthe parts and devices, as herein shown, described or claimed.

Mounted within the yoke is a front follower 16 and a casting A. said casting A comprising a friction cylinder 17 near the forward end thereof and' spring compartments 18 and 19. The spring compartment 18 is located in front'of the eompartment 19 and is separated from the latter by means of an integral intermediate wall or partition 20, said wall 20 being connected to the rear wall 21 of the spring easing by upper and lower horizontal walls 22 Specication of`Letters lsat'ent.

'ithin the cylinder 17 lis mounted a friction device, which may be ofvany suitable design and,'as shown, the same comprises 'a vplurality of frictionl shoes 25. wedge 26 and anti-friction rollers 27 between the wedge and the shoes. Mounted within the spring chamher 1S are twin arranged' sets Vof nested springs 28 which at their rearends abut the partition 2() and at their forward ends bear against a springg follower or eap 29, the latter having a lio/1w-eylindrical forward extension I5() \\'l1ien-slides loosely within vthe rear portion of the friction cylinder 17. The extension 30 is normally spaced from the rear ends of the friction shoes 25, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 and this normal position of the parts is maintained by the preliminary compression spring .31 which fits over a boss on the front face vof the follower 29 at its rear end and at its front end, engages inner shoulders 32 on the shoes.

The intermediate wall or partition 20 is perforated at two points, asindicated at 534-34 and through these extend tubular bosses-35 :formed integrally with another spring follower 3G. Between the follower 36 and the rear wall 21 of the casting A are mounted another set of twin arranged nested springs 37--? 7; As appears from Fig. 1` the vforwardends of the bosses 35 are normally .spaced from the follower 29.
The action of the gear is asfollows:- Under buff. the front follower 16 is moved inwardly, tlrus actuating the wedge and friction shoes which are resisted at first by the preliminary spring 31. After this spring has been fully compressed, which is the position of the parts shown in Fig. 4, the front .45 v lower in each of saidvcompartments, one of the follower 3o, as shown in Fig. 6. Under draft, the reverse of the preceding described actions takes place, .that is, the casting A is vmoved forwardly and the friction shoes are resisted by the preliminary spring 31,
then the springs Q8l and finally the springs 37. The gear is held in place by means of a saddle plate 40. attached to the sills 4by bolts41.' W From the preceding description it will be seen that the gear is of extremely high capacity, vet the action is easy and gradual, thus insuring easy starting and stopping of trains.
Although I have herein shownland described what Inow consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet I am aware that changes and modications may be'made without departing from the spirit of the invention and all such changes are contemplated as come within -the scope 'of the -claims appended hereto.

In a draft rigging for railway7 cars, the combination with a friction shell having .friction devices coperalile therewith, of a spring case. rigid with respect to said shell, said rase having two v spaced followers rigid therewith, tandem arranged sets of springs within said case, andtwo movable followers within said case.`

3. In a draft rigging for railway cars,the combination with a friction cylinder having 'a spring-case .formed integrally therewith,
said case being .divided into two coinpart- -ments by a rigid intermediate wall, springs in each of said compartments` a movable folsaid followers having extensions into the ad- ]acent'chamljier and adapted to be engaged by the other movable follower, and friction devices coperable with'the friction shell.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the
combination with a casting having a friction cylinder, rear wall and intermediate wall, of
friction devices coperable with the friction cylinder, a spring follower between the friction cylinder and .the intermediate wall, springs between said follower and said intermediate wall, a spring between said followei and the friction devices, another follower mounted within said casting between the rear wall and the intermediate wall thereof and vhaving extensions passing through said insaid second named follower toward the first namedv follower but normally out of engagement with the latter, said thrust Ine-ans and frstnamed follower coming into engagementafter a predetermined movement o f the friction eleiiieiits'and the first named follower,
whereby said springs come into action in sequeiire'and. their resistance to the movements of the friction elements is rendered cumulative. f
6. As an article of manufacture, a casting having a friction cylinder at one endand a spring casing formed integrally. with said cylinder, said casting having an integral wall at the end opposite to that where `the friction cylinder is formed, said wall acting as a follower7 saidl casting being provided also with a second integral wall intermediate said iir'st named wall and the inner end of thefriction cylinder, whereby to provide two springcharnbers within the spring ca'sr ing.
