REVERSING-GEARING FOR WRINGERS.
To all-"whom it mayeohcern:
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollis Court, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented new and useful: Improvements in Reversing-Gearing for Wringers, of which the followingis a spec1- fication.
; This invention is an improvement in driv ing mechanism for power-driven clothes wringers, the object being to provide a simple, safe and efficient construction. The in vention comprises certain features of .con-
.struction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and more par ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The wringer frame 1 may be in general of ordinary construction, and has end pieces 2 formed with the usual vertical slots 3 receiving the bearings 4 and 5 of the upper and lower rollers 6 and 7, springs 8 being disposed within the slots to press down upon the bearings of the upper roller.
On one end of the frame, opposite the end of the lower roller, is a box 9, which may be fixed in place by inward projecting wings 10 screwed to oppositesides of the frame, as indicated. The journal end 11 of the lower roller is extended into this box and bears a bevel gear 12. A transverse drive shaft 13 is journaled in the box, opposite and'at right angles to the journal of the lower roller, and bears opposed loose bevel pinions 14, which mesh simultaneously with the gear 12 at opposite sides of the FREDERICK W. which are provided on their inner ends with clutch formations, so that they may be coupled alternately to the drive shaft, the distance between the pinions being suflicient,
so that when the 'clutch member 17 is in mid-position, neither of the pinions is driven, and the wringer is consequently at rest, even though the shaft 13 continues to revolve. I
The clutch member may be shifted by a lever 18, which is fulcrumed intermediate its ends at 19 to a plate 20 fixed to the end said handle is adapted to engage with a retainer 26 on the face of the end piece 2, opposite the end piece which bears the box 9. The retainer 26 is formed with a central notch to hold the handle in the position which places the clutch member 17 between and out of engagement with both of the pinions 14. By withdrawing the handle from this notch and rocking it past one end of the retainer or the other, the clutch member is shifted in the corresponding direction to couple the selected pinion 14 with the drive shaft. thus causing the wringer to operate in either direction which may be desired. The rock-shaft is longitudinally movable to permit the withdrawal ofthe handle 25 from engagement with the retainer, and is constantly urged lengthwise in the direction to hold it to such engagement by means of a compression spring 27 interposed between the rocker 23 and the plate 20. The rocker, it will be observed from Fig. 1, is of sufficient width to remain in engagement with the lower end of the lever 18, irrespective of the longitudinal movement of the rock-shaft.
