To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F rrz VVILLIAM SAR- onrrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mahwah, in the county of Ben gen and State of New Jersey, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforcing- Backs for Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to reinforcing backs for brake shoes, and particularly to that type or class of backs which are outwardly formed at the center, for the presentation of an integral looped lug, and have tongues cut from the sides of the lug and bent into the general plane of the back and joined together for the reinforcement of both the lug and the brake shoe body which is disposed directly beneath the lug.
The standard size of brake shoe head as specified by the Master Car Builders Association, requires. that the under surface of the top of the lug be positioned above the plane of the back, measured at the sides of the lug, some inches, and the top of the lug be disposed some 11 inches above the back correspondingly measured. A plate inches in thickness is, for economical and practical reasons, the heaviest that can be used for the formation of reinforcing backs for brake shoes. Accordingly, it has heretofore been the practice to form the lug so that the under surface thereof is inches above the plane of the back and the cast metal of the body of the shoe is extended above the top of the lug plate to the required inches. In this construction, the height of the lug being restricted to 1% inches, the length of the tongues which were cut from the side walls were correspondingly limited and a sutlicient length for the said tongues was not had for their proper joining and securenient together. It is therefore an object of my invention to project the lug to the maximum allowable height above the plane of the back, some 1 inches, and in so doing materially increase the length of the tongues which are cut from the sides of the lug, thereby providing ample metal in the tongues for overlapping, interlocking or joining together in any preferred manner, and at the same time I make due provision for the proper keying and securement of the lug to the brake head by projecting the on Specification of Letters Patent.

l/Vith' the above and other objects in view, and with an aim to accomplish the foregoing in'a simple and expeditious manner, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the, details of construction hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring specifically to the several views, my improved reinforcing back for brake shoes is formed with a plate 10, substantially inches in thickness, and with the central portion thereof outwardly looped to form the integral lug 11. In forming the lug, the plate 10 is projected above the plane of the back, measured at the sides of the lug, so that the top surface 12 thereof is p0sitioned 1% inches above the back. Keyway openings 13 are cut in the side walls 14 of the lug, extending to the full height thereof, and the resulting tongues 15 are bent into the general plane of the back and joined together in any preferred manner, such as by overlapping and welding, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or by interlocking their ends as illustrated in Figs. e and 5.
In order that the attaching lug properly keyed and rigidly held to head of standard size, it is the under surface of the lug project to within substantially inches of the plane of the back, measured at the sides of the lug. My improved reinforcing back being formed of may be a brake necessary that substantially inch plate, and the top surface thereof projecting to the full height of inches, whereby the maximum length of tongue is obtained, it is necessary to project the under surface of the lug down toward the back some inches. This I have accomplished by providing a filler bar 18 secured or anchored to the under surface of the metal plate of which the top of the lug is formed and of substantially inches in thickness. In Figs. 4 and 5 I have illustrated a modified form of reinforcing back wherein the filler bar above described is omitted, and the top plate 19 of the lug is downwardly bent or crimped, so that while portions of the top of the lug are located at the required distance above the plane of the back measured at the sides of the lug, the under surface thereof projects to within the required g,- inches of the plane of the back correspondingly measured.
lVhat I claim is 1. A reinforcing back for brake shoes consisting of a plate substantially inches in thickness, with a portion thereof outwardly bent, forming an integral looped lug, the top surface of said lug projecting above the plane of the back the maximum height, for use in connection with a standard size brake head; means associated with the top of the lug whereby the under surface thereof is 10- Gopics of this patent may cated at the required distance above the general plane of the back for use in connection with a standard size brake head, and tongues cut from the full height of the sides of the lug defining keyway openings therein and bent into the general plane of the back, said tongues rigidly joined together.
2. A reinforcing back for brake shoes consisting of a metal. plate substantially inches in thickness, with a portion thereof outwardly extended, forming an integral looped lug, the top surface of said lug projecting substantially 1 inches above the general plane of the back measured at the sides of the lug, means whereby the under surface of the top of the lug extends to within substantially inches of the general plane of the back measured at the sides of the lug, and tongues cut from the full height of the sides of the lug defining keyway openings therein, said tongues bent into the general plane of the back and rigidly joined and connected together.
