HAIR CUTTING INSTRUMENTA APPLICATION FILED JULY 24. 1915,
'HAIR-CUTTNG SEINSTRMEET.
Application filed July 221i, 1916.
To @ZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that l, EDWARD GRANT Harms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson Barracks, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Instruments, of which the following; is a specification.
This invention relates to instruments for use in cutting and trimming hair and has as one of its objects to pro vide an instrument of this class 'which may be readily and quickly manipulated in a manner to evenly and eiiectually cut and trim the hair of the head, cutting the hair to the length desired by the user of the instrument.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the device 'that the same will be adapted to hold any ordinary safety razor blade or the device may, if desired, be employed in connection with an ordinary razor by application to the blade thereof.
Another aim or" the invention iste provide means whereby the blade may be adjusted with relation to the points of the teeth of othe device thereby adapting the device to cut hair to practically any desired length.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying the present invent-ion, the same being supplied with an ordinary. safety razor blade.
2 is a top plan view or the device.,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blade holder removed from the body ot the device.
el is a detail vertical longitudinal seev tional view through one end of the device.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the midportion oi the device.
Figi'. is a view in elevation of one of the Listing;r screws for the blade holder of the device.
The instrument enibodyin the present invention includes a body member which is hollow and preferably formed from sheet metal and this body member comprises a back l and a plurality of teeth which are indicated by the numeral 2, the teeth extending from the lower portion of the opposite sides of the hollow back l and the teeth in themselves being hollow or, in other words,
each tooth comprises spaced portions 3 which gradually converge toward the loweil end ofthe tooth and are there integrally united as indicated by the numeral 4 in Fifr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
el or' the drawings. The body is open at both ends so as to permit ot' the insertion and removal of the razor blade it either end ot the said body and in order to provide for adjustment of the blade holder the back l of the body at the ends thereof is struck down to provide portions 5 located below the plane of the upper side'of the baci; and each ot these portions is formed with a threaded opening G for a purpose to be presently" pointed out. ln strilringdown the upper side of the back. at the end'sthereoif, openings T are pifovided through which may project portions of the blade holder with which portions the adjusting screws to be herein'- at'ter described, coact.
The blade holder comprises a back 8 and downwardly converging resilient sides C between which the baci; of the razor blade is to be inserted in the manner shown in Figs. 3 ano 5 of the dra the said blade being indicated the numer l l0. As before stated, the blade may be in the nature of a safety razor blade oi any of the well known forms, or it may be the blade ot' an ordinary razor, and while the sides 5l are here illustrated as constructed and arranged to engage and hola a blade h aving relatively wide or wedge shaped back, nevertheless, it will be understood that said sides 9 may Abe iorined so as to frictionally grip and hold a thin safe y razor blade, or a supplemental means as, for example, a pair of wedge stri ps may be employed in connection. with the thin razor blade and th i said sides 9 or the holder. The back 8 oli the holder is provided with terminal extensions ll having portions l2 which extend upwardly at right angles from the extensions 1l. and which at their u Jer ends are provided with outwardly late1.....-y extendingf ears i3 each having notch lll formed therein. ln assembling the blade holder with the body oi the device, the holder is arranged within the said body with the ears 13 projeatingW through the openings 7 at the ends of the bach of the body in the manner clearly shown in Figs. l and l of the drawings. .A diustably threaded into each opening` 6 is the shank l5 of an adjusting screw which shank is provided at its upper end with a milled head permittingof ready adjustment of the set screw, and below the head with a reduced portion or neck i7 defined by slfioulders 18` at its upper and lower ends, the neck 1'? being; rotatably received within the notch il of the respective ear 13 and the said shoulders eoacting with the up-v per and under sides of the said ear so that when vthe screwv is adjusted the corresponding end of the blade holder will 4be adjusted less closely to the said ends of theA teeth whereby to determine the length to which the hair will be cut as the device is moved over the head. Of course, when the device is held substantially perpendicular to the head the hair will be cut or trimmed less closely than when the device is disposed and held more nearly flat against the head, the device being caused to assume this latter position. however, in trimming the hair around the neck.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a device of the class described, a body member having a hollow back and provided with teeth, the said back of the body member being provided at each end with an opening and beyond each opening with a bearing portion spaced in stepped relation below the plane of the top of the back, a blade holder disposed within the' body and having a back and resilient portions designed to grip the blade to beheld with the'cutting edge of the blade located in juXta-position to the said teeth, the said back of the blade holder being provided at each end with an upward extension terminating in an outwardly extending ear projecting through with teeth including spaced portions converging toward their ends, the said back of the body member being provided at each end with an opening and beyond each open-- ing with aportion having a threaded aperture and spaced in stepped yrelation below the plane of the top of the back, a blade holder disposed within the bodyd and having a bach and resilient side portions designed to grip the back of a blade to be held with the cutting edge of the blade extending between the spaced portions of the teeth, the
said back of the blade holder being provided at each end with an upward extension terminating in an outwardly extending ear proj ecting through the opening in the respective end of the back of the body member, each ear having a notch formed therein, and adj usting screws threaded into the said apen tures and having their Shanks rovided with circumscribing grooves receiving the walls of the notches in the said ears of the blade holder, the ears projecting above the portions of the back of the body member in which the said threaded apertures are formed.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
EDWARD GRANT HARRlS. [L- 8.]
