eitizen ot the United tates. residing at To- 'ledo, in the eountyofLut-as and the State ol Ohio, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Freight-Car Ends, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in freight car constrl-letion, and
more especially to the construction or 'l'orma tion of metal plates or sections for the end walls thereof.
The object of my invention isto protide a steel end for a. freight car which is sulliciently strongto withstand the strains of shifting loads within the ear as well as that of service conditions from the outside of the car.
Another object of my invention is to so form the plates that they will reduce manufacturing costs to a ll'llllllflllll'l. T

With these and other objects hereinafter explained in view, my invention consists in the construction and combination of clc' ments hereinafter described and claimed.

By flanging the plates 1, 1 and .Z'and riveting them to the webs of the end posts 1 and end plate, a grea ;er strength is obtained for the end, which is not only due to the ad; ditional strength of he flanges, but also to the fact that, by tht removal of the metal to form the hole in the web, the post is not weakened against literal bonding to any great extent. If thtse plates were riveted direct to the flanges of the end posts, without flangin the plat as, the end posts would be material y reduced in strength and should the car be subjected to great strain either from shifting loads r from outward conditions of service, the posts are liable to become broken at points where such rivet holes have been provided.
Referring to the construction shownjn all figures including 5, 6 and 7, it will be noted that, should any of the end plates be damaged they can be removed and replaced without entering the car for any purpose whatever, in: .smueh' as all rivets and box cars not provided with-end doors or other ventilating means. In Fig. the end posts .3 are of an I beam construction to which is attached a nailin strip 5": for the reception of the linin .21 Fig. 7 shows the end posts slightly di erently arranged so that the in'- ner flanges of the I beamend posts 2'2 are almost in line with the inner faces oi the end plates 23 and 24 and is the construction most desirable where it is not necessary to line the end of the car.
It will be understood from this description that althou h the improvementsof this invention are s mple they accomplish in a thoroughly practical manner all the objects sought and that by thei' employment at car end may be produced which. will be simple in manufacture and easily repaired.

Having thus described my invention, I aim in the appended claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a departure from its spirit and scope.-
