Z '0 Mi whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALLEN GLENN FLORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winchester, in the county of Lewis and tate of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates, and it has for its object to produce a gate of simple and improved construction which may be easily and expeditiously lifted and sustained at various elevations, enabling the gate to clear obstructions, such as snow drifts and the like, which would interfere with the operation thereof if permitted to remain in normal position.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the parts whereby the gate is swingingly supported, enabling the gate to be adjusted to and supported at various elevations without interfering with the swinging movement thereof.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out'in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

The gate is equipped with a latch member 20 adapted for locking engagement with a ver tical notch or slot 21 in the latch post 22, said notch or slot being of such extent as to be capable of being engaged by the latch member in any position to which the gate may be vertically adjusted. A brace member 23 extends from the latch end of the gate to the hinge rod 17, said brace memher being provided with a sleeve 2% engaging said rod. lhe eye bolts 16, the hinge straps l9 and the sleeve 24- must be relatively so arranged as to permit the requisite vertical movement of the gate with respect to the hinge rod.
An adjusting member or jack member, generally designated by H, is provided, the same comprising a sleeve 25 engaging the hinge rod 17 on which it is fitted for rotation by means of set collars 26. The sleeve 25 is provided with laterally extending arms 27 between which is journaled a pinion 28 and a spur wheel 29 meshing therewith, the shaft 30 that carries the pinion 28 being provided ith a crank 31, whereby it may be rotated. The spur wheel 29 is engaged by a spring actuated dog 32, whereby it is normally held against rotation. Fixed on the end of the gate, in mesh with the spur wheel 29, is a rack bar 83, said rack bar and the rear portion of the gate being guided between the arms 2'? of the jack, so that when the gate is swung about the axis of the hinge rod 17, a correspondingly swinging movement will be imparted to the jack member.
It will be seen that by disengaging the spring actuated dog 32 from the spur wheel 29 and rotating the latter through the me dium of the crank shaft carrying the pinion 28, the gate may be vertically adjusted so as to enable it to clear snow drifts and other obstructions, the hinge straps l9 and the sleeve 24 sliding along the hinge rod 17, while the jack member is prevented from sliding by the set collars 26. When the ob struction is removed the gate may be again lowered as will be readily understood. The gate may also be raised and sustained at a distance above the ground which will permit small stock, such as pigs, to pass beneath the gate, while other animals, such as horses and cattle, are prevented from passing, the advantage of such adjustment being readily apparent.
By the modified construction of this device illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the shaft 34 carrying the spur wheel 29 is extended beyond the outer side face of one of the arms 27, said shaft being equipped with a drum 35. A flexible hoisting element, such as a slender cable 36, is provided, said hoisting element being terminally connected at one end with the drum 35 and at the other end with the gate, and said hoisting element being guided over guiding means, such as pulleys 37 at the top of the gate post. By this construction the rack bar 33 is dispensed with, and it will be seen that by rotation of the crank 30 the'hoisting element may be wound upon or unwound from the drum 35,
