To @El wiwm may comete.. Be it knoivn that L, JoHN limit? a -sub-- ject of the King of Great Britain7 residing at 1New YVindsor, in the county ot' Carroll and State of Maryland, `have invented new` and useful Improvements in Grraphoplione- Tone-.firm Stops, of which the following is a specilication. l U T his invention relates to improvements in giaphophone tone arin stops., and has for its object to provide an adjustable means which will limit the inoveinent of the tonearin in one direction to adjust the stylus in its correct starting positionupon records of diilerent diameters.
Urdinarily the tone-arm is moved toward the edge of the record and with the utmost care and patience tlie stylus is plaeed in its starting position. ,This at times is very diiiicult, owing to poor light upon the record or to the faulty eyesight of the operator. llliththe improved stop, the toner' arin is swung outwardly until it strikes the stop and is lowered upon tl'ie record when Y it 'will be placed correctly 'to start playing.
The object of this invention is attained loy the `means illustrated in the aooonipaiiying drawing? in wliioli-- Figui-e l is a plan Viewr snowing: the top of a grapliophoiie with its tone-erin in engagement with one forni ol 'the improved stop. 2 is a perspective view of the improved stop shown in ig. l. Big. 3 is vertical sectional view through the lower end of the standard of the stop shown in lqigs. l and 2. Fig. is a perspective view of a Inodied form of the stop. Fig. is
aplan vievr of the same showin?" 'the stopping post in section and portion of the rota-ting plate broken away to show un oerlying parte. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a further modioatioii. arts leeineslioivn in section.
Similar reference numerals in all et 'the ligures of the drawing' designate like parts. The torni of sto shouf'n in .di s. 2 and 3 embodies a standard l() which is preteralily tubular and has a lease il provided with a bottom plate l2, shown in Fig. 3,. 1'oy Wlfiioli it is secured to the of the grapliophone oase by a Central sereiv Rotataloly mounted upon the top end or tiie tubular standard 10 is the adfustalele stoov J v l 7 tlie same comprising a supporting plate .le
furnished with a handle l5 at'on'e'side and radially extending arins 16 and 17 projecting from two of its other sides. The Varm 16 is somewhat shorter than the arm 17, and secured to these arms is a vertically disposed plate 18 upon the outer face ol which is secured a pad 19 to form a butler for the tone-arni. rlflie supporting plate lllas riveted to itsundei side a depending tubular portion 20 which snugly engages over the top end of the tubularstandard l() and upon which it is adapted to rotate. The loiiffer9 which includes the pad 19 and. the plate 18, is shaped to form substantially flat tac/es Ql and 22., arranged'at right angles to each other, one of which is located nearer the central pivoted point than the other, so that when the aee 2l presented to abutting position the tone-arm will be stopped to loeate the stylus correctly upon a record` l2 inches indiai'neter, and when the face 22 is presented it' will form an abutment to locate the stylus in the proper position upon a record l() inelies in dian'ieter.
To positively limit the movement of the. abutting faces when they reach their abutting' positions, a-liinit stop is provided. the saine being formed by recessing the lower edge of the depending portion 20 to forni two shoulders 23 and 24; against which a pin or stud 25 enigages.v Thus?, as shown in .i
'2, when the pin 25 is in engagement with the shoulder .1Q-l, the buffer tace .1 is pre,- sentedto engage the tone-arm, and when the plate i-l is rotated trie right. the shoulder 23 is brought into engagement with the pin 259 and l i'er tace 22 is positioned to stoptlle tone-arni.
'llie 'orin of stop slnwn in lFigs. e and 5 embodies a! loose l te 2F seoured to the ca.- ing in an f suitable noaiiny and upon which is rotatably secured, oy central screw 2?'. supporting plete 28 having a handle 2t extending frei t ereo. Mounted upon said suppe i te v28 at one side thereof and adapted to oe earried "therewith9 is a vertieall '7 y dispoL Y per u butler sleeve 3l. said stop-standard 30 f lower face of o; i e i the pla y provided with a ring n isadapte o Contact with the shoulders 33 and 3e termed on the base plate' 26.l This construction forms a limit stop for the adjustable stop-standard. in two positions, to adapt the vdevice for use in positioning the-stylus upon'either a 10 inch 5 or a 12 inch record.
' The form of stop shown in Fig. 6 einbodies a base-plate 35 which is adapted to4 be secured to the top of the'lgraphophone' casing, saidplatevhaving secured thereon a bracket member 36 inthe upper end of mediate -of its ends, furnishing an upper '-,turnedl end 39 Von the opposite -side,ytlius eiectually forming a limit stop or the two positions ofV the standard.
