CHARLES R. FARGO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ASSIGNOR TO WILSON-J ONES LOOSE LEAF COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TRAY LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed July 16, 1915. Serial No. 40,182.
which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved type of loose leaf binder adapted for use upon a specially constructed stand forming the subjeot matter of my co-pending application for combined stand and binder and method of use, executed and filed of even date herewith. In this type of hinder the cover members form substantially'what may be termed trays, permitting entire separation/of the cover members one from another for disposal upon a suitable rack or stand so as to permit rapid transposition of the pages or leaves. of the binder from one cover member or tray to the other in posting the books.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a loose leaf binder embodying tray cover members detachably connected with one another and provided with registering means for retaining the leaves of the binder properly engaged therein and detachable therefrom. 1
It is also an object of this invention to construct a tray binder embracing cover members each having angle members hingedly associated therewith, the angle members being attached to lie flat against one another when the cover members arev associated together, and with means for locking the engaging surfaces of said angle irons one to another.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a tray binder embracing cover members provided with interfitting hinged connections for association one with another when said cover members are placed together with the pages therebetween, and with binding posts one upon each of the hinge connec ion members for engagement with the detachable leaves used in the binder.
It is also an object of this invention to construct tray binders embracing tray cover members detachable from one another and each provided with binding posts for registration of the loose leaves-used in the bind-' ers when transferred from one cover tray member to another, and further provided with a detachable binding post adapted for engagement with both of said cover members and through supplementary apertures provided in the margin of the leaves to positively retain the same from removal from the binderexcept by detachment of said binding post or removal over the end thereof.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a tray binder embracing a pair of detachable tray cover members each provided with a binding post toreceive detachably engaged thereon the slotted margin of loose leaf pages permitting transference of pages from one tray cover member to the other when said cover members are detached and mounted in a suitable stand provided for the purpose, said device further provided with a detachable binding post for engagement with both of said cover members and'engagement through apertures provided in said loose leaf pages acting when said cover members are locked together with said post engaged through the apertures in the pages, to maintain the pages positively within the binder, preventing withdrawal therefrom.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a loose leaf tray binder embracing a plurality of binding posts for engagement with leaves having both slotted and apertured margins to provide for retainment of the pages in the binder without compression when the cover members are locked together, and to permit detachment and removal and transference of the pages from one cover member to the other when said cover members are separated and mounted on a stand for the purpose.
The invention 1 (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter with the cover members locked together and parts shown in section.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail section taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail section taken on line 66 of Fig. l.
Fig. 7 is a detail section taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary interior plan view at one end of the binder showing the looking means illustrated in Fig. 7 in release position.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 1, indicates one cover member of the binder, the reference numeral 2, the other or corresponding cover member which may be constructed of any suitable material suitably covered with fabric or leather, as desired, and each having connected thereto by means of a hinge 3, a strip 4, forming a part of said cover members, which also, as clearly shown, is covered with a suitable material. In each instance, the hinge connection 3, is formed in part by a long angle plate, in one instance denoted by the reference numeral 7, and in the other instance by the reference numeral 8, which are rigidly secured to the respective binder strips a. The angle plates 7 and 8, which afford the back .of the binder, overlap and lie closely fiat upon and against one another as clearly shown in the sectional views of Figs. 5, G, and 7. Rigidly secured in the upstanding flange of the angle plate 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, is a binding post 9, the end of which is recessed, as clearly shown, to engage over a short pin 10, secured in the upstanding flange of the corresponding angle plate 7. Similarly, another binding post 11, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is secured in the upstanding flange of the inner angle plate 7, and is adapted to detachably engage a pin provided for the purpose secured in the upstanding flange of the outer angle plate 8, the details of construction, however, of the latter not being shown for the reason that the construction is identical with that shown in Fig. 5. A detachable binding post 12, is also provided Which, as shown in Fig. 6, is adapted to engage in recesses provided in the respective binder strips 4, of the cover members 1 and 2, through apertures provided in the upstanding flanges of the angle plates 7 and S.
For the purpose of locking said cover members one to another, an arm or latch lever 13, is pivotally connected by means of a rivet 14, on the interior surface of the inner angle plate 7, one of said arms being disposed at each end thereof, and .each at its end, as clearly shown in Fig. 7, is provided with a pin or rivet 15, adapted to be swung into engagement with registering slots 16 and 17, provided respectively in the ends of the inner and outer angle plates 7 and 8. As shown in Fig. 1, a metal receptacle 18, is secured upon the outer surface of the outer angle plate 8, for insertion of a suitable title card therein, by which the binder may be identified.
The operation is as follows:
When the device is used, the tray cover members are separated one from another, thus leaving the pages or leaves of the binder resting on one cover member or that to which the inner angle plate 7, is connected, the angle plate serving to maintain the pages in proper alinement, due to the fact that the edges rest thereagainst. The intermediate locking post 12, may then be removed through the apertures in the pages, and from the tray cover member with which it is engaged, if so desired, and this permits any one or more of the leaves to be withdrawn. One of said leaves, denoted by the reference numeral 19 is shown in Fig. 3, and each of said leaves is provided with slots near its ends and with an aperture at the middle of the margin thereof for engagement with the respective binding posts 9, 11, and 12.
After the posting of the ledger has been completed with the leaves in their proper arrangement, that is with the slots thereof engaged over the binding post 11, this insuring proper registration thereof, the binding post 1:2, is inserted through the apertures in said leaves and into the receiving aperture provided in the binding strip 4, of the cover member 1, to which the angle plate 7, and binding post 9, is attached. The other cover member 2, is then placed thereover such that the binding post 9, thereof engages through the slots at the ends of the leaves, and after proper registration of the cover members they are locked together by swinging the latches 13, at the ends thereof into engagement with the registering slots 16 and 17, of the angle plates.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through'a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by' the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, cover members, inner and outer angle plates hingedly connected thereto and adapted to be completely separated from one another, a binding post secured on each of said angle plates, means secured on said angle plates for co-action with said binding posts to properly aline the same when the covers are placed together, and means locking said angle plates one to another.
2. In a device of the class described, a binder comprising cover members, an angle plate hingedly connected to each thereof, said plates being adapted to be completely secured upon said respective angle platesadapted to be arranged in parallel relation when said one another by means of said angle plates, and a removable binding post adapted to be held in position by engagement through apertures in said respective angle plates when said cover members are associated with one another.
3. In a device of the class described cover members, angle plates hingedlv connected thereto adapted to lie flat against one anand having registering slots therein,
other, binding posts secured upon said respective "angle plates, and pivoted means mountedon one of said angle plates adapted to engage the registering slots in each of said angle I plates to hold the cover members associated with one another.
4. In a loose leaf binder adapted to retain apertured leaves therein without comcover members are attached to pression thereon, separable cover members,
a slotted angle plate 'hingedly connected to each of said cover members and adapted to lie flat againstone another, a binding post secured on each of said angled plates, a pin secured on each of said angled plates adapted to be engaged by the binding post of the other plate to hold the apertured leaves in position between said cover members, a detachable binding post engaging through said leaves and angle plates to retain the leaves within the. binder when the cover members are associated with one another, and means on'said angled plates for locking the same one to another.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
