J. R. MITCHELL.
CAR UNDERFRAMING.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 6, 1915.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
INVENTOR. B q"; $.LQ=;: 81m 1 ATTORNEY WITNESS,
1T err ran JOHN R. MITCHELL, OF EVANSTON ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR-TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
OHAZY, NEW YORK.- I
CAR-UNDERFRAMI'Ne.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr; 17, 1917.
Application filed July 6, 1915. Serial No. 38,109.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a.certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Underframing, of which the following is a full, clear, conelse, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car underframing.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for securing, bracing and connecting the center and draft sills with the end sill; said means being so arranged as to form a pocket to receive the outer end of the center sill.
In the drawing forming a part of the specifications, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view of a portion of a car' underframe, the section being taken substantially on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the combined pocket and support.
In said drawing, 1010 denote the wooden center sills, to which are secured the channel draft sills 1111, the latter being secured to the undersides of the center sills by bolts 12, or other suitable fastening arrangement. The end sill 13 is also connected with the draft sills 11 by means of bolts 14, as shown.
To form a rigid connection between the various sills, and support the center and draft sills from the end sill, I have provided a casting A, the latter comprising a horizontal bottom 15, triangular shaped side walls 1616, front or end Wall 17, and an offset flange 18 at the top thereof, said flange 18 being so disposed. that it extends over and rests upon the top of the end sill. Each draft sill is secured to its correspond ing supporting pocket A, by means of rivets 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the center sill is preferably recessed or rabbeted at 20, in order that the bottom face of the member A may extend flush with the bottom face of the center sill.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that the center sill has its end received in a pocket, which pocket is supported by the end sill; also, the draft sill is supported by the end sill in a manner much more effective than has hitherto been employed.
Although I have herein shown and de scribed what I now consider the preferred embodiment :of my invention, yet I am aware that changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I contemplate all such changes and variations as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim: I
1. In car underframing, the combination wlth an end sill, a draft sill and .a center sill, the end and center sills extending in the same plane and the draft sill being below the center sill, of unitary means for supporting said center sill and draft sill from the top of the end sill, said means being directly connected to the draft sill.
2. In car underframing, the combination with an end sill, a draft sill and a center sill, the draft sill extending under the end sill, of means for supporting. said center sill and draft sill from the top 'of the end sill, said means comprising a member havmg a pocket within which the end of the center sill is disposed and provided also with a shoulder at the top extending over and resting upon the'end sill, the draft sill being rigidly secured to said member.
3. In car under-frame, the combination with an end-sill, a center-sill, and a metal draft-sill located below the center-sill, of means for supporting said center-sill and draft-sill from the top of the end-sill, said means includinga combined pocket and support having a recess within which is adapted to be seated the end of said center-sill, said combined pocket and support being riveted to the draft-sill and having an extension overhanging said end-sill.
4. In car underframing, the combination with a transversely extending sill, a longitudinally extending sill located substantially in the same plane as the transversely extending sill, and a third sill located below and extended parallel with said longitudinally arranged sill, of means for supporting said longitudinally arranged sill and having an extension overhanging said transversely extending sill.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I 13 ham hereunto subscribed my name this Qlth day of June 1915.
JOHN R. MITCHELL.
said third sill from the top of the trans versely extending sill, said means including a combined pocket and support having a recess Within which is adapted to be received the end of said longitudinally eX- tending sill, said combined pocket and support being secured to said third sill and Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eatents,
