TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1917.
Application filed July 9, 1914. Serial No. 849,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn H. PAOK- WOOD, S12, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Tampa, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Table of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a table having a base which is normally pivoted in a guideway on an arm of a chair so that the table section may be rotated to a position where it will rest on the other chair arm, it being possible to move the table section rearwardly in the guideway, thereby disposing the table section longitudinally of and over the first mentioned chair arm. To the table section there is hinged a table section which may be adjusted relatively to the table section by means provided. When the table section is disposed over the chair arm to which it is pivoted the table section normally depends therefrom at the outer side of the chair arm.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing how my table is used;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the position of.my table when not in use;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing means for pivoting the table base in the guideway; and
Figs. 1 and 5 are fragmentary views showing how the bolt is made use of to hold the table section by means of the arm in alinement with the table base.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a guide member 5 is provided having a guideway 6, there being metal strips 7 secured to the top of the guide member 5, these metal strips 7 being spaced apart for receiving the shank 8 of the pin 9, the shank 8 of the said pin 9 being also disposed in an orifice 10 in the table section 11. The pin 9 has a head 12 disposed in the guideways 6 which prevents removal of the table section 11 from the guide member 5, while permitting the table section 11 to rotate relatively to the guide member 5 and also to move longitudinally of the guide member 5.
As will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings the guide member 5 may be secured to the arm 13 of a chair 1% by means of a clamp 15; but if desired this guide member 5 may be made integral with the said arm 13. The table section 11 when it is rotated and is disposed across the chair 1% is supported at its outer terminal 16 by means of the chair arm 17 To the edge 18 of the table section 11 there is hinged a table section 19, and in the underside of this table section 19 there is a drawer 20 which is mounted in the customary manner. The table section 19 is held in adjusted position relatively to the table section 11 by the arm 21 which is pivoted to the tablesection 11 at 22 and which is provided with a longitudinal slot 23 with recesses 24, in any one of which a pin 25, which projects from the table section 19, may be disposed. WV hen it is desired to change the position of the table section 19 relatively to the table section 11, the arm 21 is moved to free the pin 25 from the recess 24: in which it has been disposed when the arm 21 is moved to a position where the pin 25 will be disposed in another of the said recesses 24. As a means for holding the table section 19 in alinement with the table section 11, I provide a bolt 26 which is arranged in the table section 11 and which is normally held extended by means of the spring 27, this bolt 26 being provided for insertion in an orifice 28 in the arm 21. When the bolt 26 is disposed in the said orifice 28 it will serve to hold the arm 21 relatively to the table section 11 which will provide a supporting means for the table section 19 disposed in alinement with the said table section. There is a slot 29 in the table section 11 to which is disposed a stud 3O secured-to the bolt 26 for moving the said bolt 26 inwardly to permit the arm 21 to pass.
I prefer to provide the table section 11 with marks 31 indicating inches and fractions thereon, and I also prefer to provide the table section 19 with a checker board 32 and a cribbage board 33; but, of course. these features may be omitted when desired,
Having thus described my invention 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a table section adapted to be superposed upon one arm of a chair, a guide element carried by said table section, a complementary guide element adapted to be carried by a chair arm and cooperatively connected with the first mentioned guide element to pivotally and slidably connect the table section with the chair arm to permit the table section to move longitudinally and transversely of the arm, whereby one longitudinal edge of said table section may be disposed at the outer longitudinal edge of the chair arm, and said edge of the table section may be disposed at the front of the chair arm and at right angles thereto when the table section is extended away from the front of the chair arm, a second table section hinged to the aforesaid edge of the first table section and adapted to depend from the first table section when said first table section is superposed longitudinally over the chair arm, and means for holding the second table section in adjusted position relative to the first table section.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated base adapted to be superposed upon one arm of a chair, a table section having one edge of approximately equal length with said base, guide means connecting one end of said table section with said base to permit the table section to rotate and also to move longitudinally of the base from end to end, whereby one edge of the said table section may be disposed at the outer edge of the base when said table section is disposed above and longitudinally of the base, and whereby the aforesaid edge of the table section may be disposed at the front of the base and at right angles thereto when the table section is extended away from the front of the base, a second table section hinged to aforesaid edge of the first table section and adapted to depend from the first table section when said first table section is disposed longitudinally over the base, and means for holding the second table section in adjusted position relative to the first table section.
3. In a table, a base having a guideway, a table section pivoted in the guideway, a second table section hinged to the first table section, an arm pivoted to one of the table sections and having a slot with a recess and a pin on the other table section disposed in the slot and adapted to move into the recess, whereby one section may be swung and held relatively to the other section, there being an orifice in the arm and a bolt on one of the table sections for engaging the arm at the said orifice.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
