and feet, of flexible and extensible Webs of elastic material, by which the effective surfaces of said members may be greatly extended, with a corresponding increase in the effective means of propulsion.
-It also consists of details of construction,
all of which will be more completely explainedby reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a view of the device adapted to the hand and partially extended.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1. v Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4; is a plan of the part shown in Fig. 3. In carrying out my invention I make coverings A adapted to fit and be worn upon the hands. These coverings are preferably of very thin and elastic rubber, which will cling and form a close fit and may have securing means at the wrists. fingers of the glove, webs 2 of thin elastic 85 material extend, and occupy this space. These webs are extended between the backs of the fingers and thumb as shown, and thus form channels 3 between the fingers, said channels having a depth equal to the thickness 'of the fingers from front to back. By extending the web along the backs of the fingers and to the rearfof the finger crotches and between the knuckles of the hand,'tl1e channels between the fingers will be 415 lengthened, and form pockets 4: at-the inner ends of the channels, consequently when the hands are extended for a stroke and the fingers spread apart, there will be formed deep convergent channels, terminating in pockets which will receive and retain the water and assist the action of paddling.
A toe piece 6, of flexible elastic material is slipped over the front part of the foot. and held in place by cords or straps 7 passing around the ankle, and apocket 8 is formed Between the which opens outward to admit water when the leg is extended. The effective pressure is thus materially increased, and added to that developed by the arms. To produce the full effectiveness of these webs, the outer ends are arched or convexed as shown at 2.
It will further be noted, that the appliance worn by either limb, z'. 6., leg or arm, presents a channel extending longitudinally of the foot or hand respectively of the limb, and consequently in the direction of the swimming stroke, so that the pockets aface or swimming the direction of the effective stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure b'y LettersPatent is 1. A swimming appliancecomposed of a member formed for wear on a limb of the body, said-member havinga' channel diverging at its outer end and which in swimming position extends lengthwise of the member v borne by the limb and terminating at its inner end in a water trapping pocket which pocket faces in the direction of the swimming stroke and is of a width substantially equal to that of the inner end of the channel.
end outwardly. to form a relativelylarge entrance to the channel.
3. A swimmin appliance composed of a member formed or wear over the toes of the foot, and a channel formed on said member and extending longitudinallyof the foot and 7 over the toes thereof 'in normal position of the latter and under the toes in'swimming position thereof, said channel being closed at its inner end, anda member extended out beyond the channel bottom and extending beyond the toes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand'in the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
