.To all vw/Lam t may concern:-
le it known that I, CHARLES C. EDWARD'S, a citizen of the Umted States, and a resident of Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and Stute of Arizona, have invented a certain new and usefulk Improvement in Mess and Ice' Boxes, of which the following is a specification. y i
My invention is an improvement in mess and ice boxes, and has for its object to pro- Vide a box of the character specified that when in use will provide an eflicient re,
frigerator or. cupboard and; which when packed will provide a neat plain package of -convenient size and that willA meet nthe re- `quireinents for army-use 1n regard to s1ze.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the iin--v proved box closed and ready for transportation;
F ig.,2 is asimilar view with the box set up' Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a section on the 'line lf-4 of Fig. 2, both views looking inthe direction of the arrows adjacent to the lines;
Fig. 5 'is a partial vertical section at right Fig. 6 isa perspective View of the door latch;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the'hinge connection between the table and thelloox;l Fig 8 is a similar view lof oneend of the box, showing one of the collapsible Fig, 9is a perspective view .ofy the and cover; I
Fig. 10 is a perspective View of the door legs; ice' box for the ice box compartment; and
vvided for holding the door closed.
Fig. 11 is a section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 4.
In the present embodiment of the invention a box or casing 1 is provided which is divided into two similarcompartments by afvertical partition 3. A door 5 is hinged to the open front of the box for closing the saidfront, 4and 'a latch mechanism is pro- It will be noticed that the box is of panel Iconstrue` tion, strips being arranged at each end, at`
the top and bottom and at the side Wall opposite the door to frame the said walls and the door closes between the extended edges of the panel strips at the front of this end,-
top, and bottom walls.
rlhe door 5 is hinged to the paneli strips `to slide vin a -forming feet,
'at the inner'end of the .ing flanges 15l of one side,A indicated Lat 6, and legs T are hinged to the outer face of the door near its outer edge and ends as indicated at 8 for .supporting the door in horizontal position when the box is opened, and the door is held closed by the latch mechanism shown `more particularly in Fig. 6, and comprising a handled latch plate 9, which is mounted groove 10 in the outer face of the door, and retaining bars 1l are arranged transversely of the door to'prevent outward movement of the latch. The handle by its engagement with the bars, limits the sliding movement of the plate. The door extends the full length and width of the box. The legs 7 have angular lugs at their free ends as shown in Fig. 4:, and the outer face of the door is notched or recessed for receiving these feet when the legs are in folded position.
Another door 12 is provided in the top ofthe ice compartment, the said doorl being cut in the top of the box and fitting flush with the top when closed. Dowel pins 13 ane provided at the innerend' of the door, the sa1d Apins engaging openings i n the adface of the doorfor holding the door closed, the said latch engaging a pin on the adjacent end wall. The panel strips at the side of the top are cut away for a greater distance than the length of the door to form extensions a door 'which enga ge above theA top to firmly hold the door in place.
Patented Apr. 3, 191'?. l
'jacent yen d of lthe cut away top and a spring n latch 141s provided on the inner .In removing the door the latch mustbe y cover 16 of wood or the like is provided for inclosing the pan and the ice therein. This cover is of a size to fit within the paneling at the 'top and the outer end has an extension 16a adapted to extend through .the door opening forthe door 12 to prevent longitudinal movement of the cover. It- Will be noticed that thecompartment having the gular spring latch 19 intermediate its ends for engaging the paneling at the bottom of the-box to limit the extending movement of the leg'. A similar but heavier latch 20 is arranged above each leg on ythe adjacent Wall and in position such that When the latch 19 engages the paneling at. the bottom of the Wall, the upper end of the leg will free the latch 20 so that it may spring out to prevent collapse or inward sliding movement of the leg. t'will be noted from an inspection I of" Fig. 2 that these legs 17 are arranged on the rear Wall at the ends thereof, and on the end Walls near the front, so that they do not interfere with the movement of the door 5.
A' table 21 in the form of a plate is provided for c operation with the box, and the said table is arranged to be placed in the position of Figs. 1 and 3, that is, on the outer face of the door 5 and connected to the box; or in the position of Fig. 2', that is, in the plane'of the top ot the box and also conneet-ed therewith. The said plate 21 is provided at one side edge with hinge leaves 22 each of'which has a pintle 23 in connection therewith. These pintles are adapted to engage hinge leaves 24 on the box near the hinge connection ci vthe door 5, or hinge leaves 25 at the top of the rear Wall of the box. By engaging the pintles With the hinge leaves 24C, and moving the table longitudinally in its plane, it will be evident that the pintles may be engaged with the said hinge leaves and by moving the table. in the opposite direction l'it may be quickly and easily detached from the leaves. This table is reinforced on one face With reinforcing strips 2G, these strips being on the outer face when the table is in the'position of Fig. 1, and on the under 'ace when the table is in the position of Fig. 2.
The table is also provided with a pair of extensible and contractible legs which also act as clamping members for connecting the table to the box door 5. Each of these legs consists of a section 2.7 hinged to the table and a section 28 mounted to slide in the section 27. The section 27 has its side edges turned over upon the body to form guides for engagement by the section 28, and the section 28 has a headed pin 29 engaging a longitudinally extending slot 30, 1n the section 27.` v
Openings are also provided in the two sections which are adapted to register when the sections are in retra @ted or extended position. These openings are adapted vto be engaged by a locking rin 31 to`hold the parts in either-position. he outer end of each section 28 has a laterally extending lug which lis adapted to engage the opposite side of the box when the table is in the position-of Figs. 1 and 3. These lugs are of such length that when the table is in the .position of Fig 4, they Will support the samedin horlzontal position, while when ythe table isin the position of Figs. 1 and 8, and
the legs are contracted, the laterally extendfing lugs 82 will engage-the opposite side of y the box to clamp thc table to the box. Pins 33 are provided at the said opposite side of the box for engagement by openings in the lugs, it being understood that the locking rings lock the legs in position at this time.
During transportation the parts occupy the position of Fig. l, the ice pan and the cover being placed in the refrigerating compartment with the door 12 closed and with the table 21 locked in position over the door 5. The other compartment of the box serves for storage, and when it is desired to use the box the parts are arranged as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the door 5, however, being closed except when access is desired to the interior of the box. `The articles to be rcfrigerated are placed in the refrigerating compartment below the ice pan and other articles may be place in the other compartments.
