SPLINT.
Specification of Letters 1atnt.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Application filed. August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,?73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Anonzo E. CLOUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Lake and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to splints and more particularly to that class of splints used on fractured limbs and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this charactor that is adjustable in length and also provides for extending the injured limb.
Another object is to provide a device of this class that may be adjusted to stout or lean persons so as to keep the splint in the center of the limb.
A further object is to provide a device that will prevent the patient assuming injurious positions during treatment, and is so constructed that it will aid in supporting the injured limb when the patient is turned on his side for bathing or other purposes.
Other objects such as simplicity, durability, lightness, cheapness in manufacture, and the general improvement of the art will be brought out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which: I
Figure 1 is a front view of the device in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the bottom cross piece of Fig. 1, showing the un der side.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my device comprises side brace member 1 consisting of parts 2 and 8 having a plurality of holes 4 and adjustably held to gether by bolts 5 passing through the holes 4.
The part 2 of the side brace member 1 is secured to bottom cross piece 6 and has braces 7 secured to its lower end and abutting the bottom cross piece 6. The cross piece 6 extends an equal distance from each side of the side brace member 1 and a sup,- porting brace 8 extends from thepart 2 of the side brace member 1 to the one end of the bottom cross piece 6.
A member 9 having a plurality of holes 10 is held adjustably crosswise on the side brace member 1 by bolts 12 and is adapted" to be adjusted to center the device when applied to stout or thin persons. A body strap member 16 and flexible cords 17 which are passed through apertures 18 in the bottom cross piece 6 and are secured together by k'notting. A roller bar 19 is passed between the cords 17 and held in place by the securing pin 20 inserted in one of the apertures 21.
The operation of the device is as follows: The splint is adjusted to the required length preferably about 6 inches longer than the limb. The member 9 i then adjusted to suit the size of the person whether stout or thin so as to center the device on the injured limb.
The splint is then ready to be applied, and when placed in position, the perineal band 15 put in place and drawn tight and held by hard knots and the body strap 13 secured, the device is firmly and securely in place, and the foot member 16 is then secured to the patients foot by adhesive plaster which extends from the knee joint and is reinforced at the bottom, and is held in place by its own adhesiveness and a gauze bandage secured by adhesive strips.
The operation of extending the limb may now be performed and consists insimply turning the roller bar 19 until the desired extension is obtained and securing it in place by the pin 20.
It will be apparent that my device may be and is adapted to be used on either the right or left limb of the patient.
It will of course be understood that I may construct the device of any material and that I may make any changes in construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. An extension splint comprising a side brace member, said 'member being com brace, a body strap for holdingthe top of said splint in position, a centering member adjustably secured to said side brace member and adjustable crosswise thereon, and means for extending a fractured limb.
2. An extension splint comprising a side brace member, a bottom cross piece, said bottom cross piece extending an equal distance from each side of said side brace, aperinealrbandf secured to said side brace, a body strap adjacent the top of said side brace, means for centering said splint, said means comprisinga centering member adjustably secured to said side brace and cooperating with said body strap, and means mounted in said bottom cross piece for extending a fractured limb.
3. An extension splint comprising a side brace member, a bottom cross piece, a perineal band secured to said side brace, a body strap adjacent the top of said side brace, means for extending a fractured limb,
