Be it known that I, Fmamnnoir N. BRISLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Tillman and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Towel- I-Iolders, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates to towel holders, an object. of which is to positively hold the towel from displacement, but permitting it to readily remove by merely exerting pressure thereon.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simplified device which may be conveniently mounted on a stationary support, and which is equally adapted for use with towels of various thicknesses.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a towel holder constructed in accordance with my invention,

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrow.

In the embodiment of the invention shown, a base-board or supporting member 1 is provided which is made of wood, metal or any other'suitable material and of any desired design. The board is provided at each corner with an opening through which a screw or other securing means passes, whereby the base-board may be secured to a stationary support. Mounted centrally upon the front face of the base-board l is a housing 2, preferably made of wood, the inner face of one end being snugly engaged with the base-board at an attaching portion 2 and detachably associated therewith by a screw 3 as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2. A portion of the inner face of the housing 2 is removed, as indicated at 4 and shown to advanta e in Fig. 2, to provide a space bee housing and the base-board 1, subjacent the portion 2. This space will permit insertion of a towel 5 or the like therebetween, and is of a sufficient range to Specification of Letters Patent.

The housin 2 is provided with an elongated longitudlna ly extending recess 6, in which is mounted an elastic element 7, the latter 1n the present instance comprising a flatsprlng. This spring has its lower end flexed as at 8 to normally urge a frictional towel retainer or ball 9 into enga ement with a towel 5. The lower end o the recess 6 tapers as indicated at 6 and the tapered portlon. of the recess communicates with a spherlcal socket 62 which is a continuation of the recess, the pocket being of a diameter slightly greater than the circumference of theball 9 in order to accommodate movement of the latter therein.

The upper end of the elastic element 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is inserted in a slot or recess 63 in the upper end of the housing 2, above the recess 6, communicates therewith, and is held from displacement in said slot by a U-shaped staple 10. The spring 7 is of substantially the same length as the recess including its pocket and hence after insertion of the spring into the slot 63, the spring cannot easily become displaced as the staple 10 is farther from slot 63 than the lower end of the spring from the opposite wall thereto at pocket 62. Base board 1 is secured to a stationary support 1n use, as previously suggested, and the towel is drawn upwardly into the space 4 intermediate the housing and the base board 1. Consequently ball 9 will be forced laterally in the pocket 2 against the tension of spring 7 and the towel will be disposed intermediate the ball and baseboard 1, held against displacement by frictional engagement with the base board and the ball.

It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred, embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes and details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim without sacrificing any of the advantages.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
