To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DUDLEY J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cue-Tip Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for fastening the tip of cues employed in games of billiard, pool and the like, and its object is to provide a simple and efficient fastening device, and one which is cheap and which enables the tip to be easily and quickly fastened to the end of the cue.

The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentof the cue and its tip;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the several parts constituting the invention, separated.

Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes an ordinary cue having the usual leather or other tip 6 fitted tc its outer end. The cue is reduced at its outer end to form a projecting tenon 7 over which tightly fits a ferrule 8 having its outer end closed by a head 9 provided with a central opening 10 which is screw-threaded. The inner side of the head fits against the outer extremity of the tenon, and the outer side of the head is flat and formed with a series of concentric circular groves 11. The tip seats on the grooved side of the head, and is adapted to be glued thereto, the grooves serving to aid in retaining the glue or other adhesive between the head and the base of the tip.

An additional fastening for the tip 6 is a pin 12 having one end pointed as shown at 13 and provided at the-opposite end with a barb or spear-shaped head 14:. The pin also has, intermediate its ends, a screw-threaded shank 15.

The pin hereinbefore described is screwed ferrule, and the opposite end of the into the opening 10 of the ferrule 8 before the ferrule is applied to the tenon 7, which positions the pointed end 13 inside the ferrule. The ferrule is now driven on the tenon, whereupon the pointed end of the pin is driven into the tenon lengthwise from the outer end thereof. The barb 14 is located on the outside of the head 9, and the tip 6 is, next forced over the projecting barb, so that it penetrates the base of the tip. The glue or other adhesive is applied before the tip is driven on the barb, and when the glue hardens, the tip is securely held in place.

The pin, where it pierces the tenon, reinforces the same, and it can be adjusted to project the barb more or less from the head or closed end of the ferrule, for the reception of a flat or thick tip. As the barb penetrates the tip, the latter is securely held in place. The base of the tip may be slitted to receive the barb. After the tip is in place it may be compressed at its base to force the material inward to come behind the barb, the back of the barb being spaced from the head a sufficient distance for this purpose, as shown in Fig. 2-, which further secures the tip and prevents its withdrawal from the barb.

I claim:

1. A fastener for cue tips comprising a ferrule closed at its outer end and having thereat a central screw-threaded opening, and a pin having a threaded shank adapted to be screwed into the aforesaid opening, said pin having a driving point at one end which projects into the ferrule, and the op posite end of the pin having a barb project ing from the outer end of the ferrule.

2. A fastener for one tips comprising a ferrule closed at its outer end and having thercat a central screw-threaded opening, and a pin having a threaded shank adapted to be screwed into the aforesaid opening, the pointed end of the pin projecting into the pin havlng a pointed barb projecting from the outer end of the ferrule, and provided with a widened base, said base being spaced from the outer end of the ferrule.
