A TTQR NE Y.
CHARLES E. JONE$, OF GHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
ASSIGNOR '10 METAL ARTS dz GRAPES 60.,
OECHIGAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HANGER FOR LIGHT-REFLECTING BOWLS.
Application filed October 31,
To all whom iafmay concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hangers for Lightinasmuch as the drilling of them is an exceedingly diiiicult operation, a great deal of loss results by breakage during the operation. A further objection to the bowls, which are drilled, is that it forces the user to employ a specific number of clamps, regardless of whether hedesires to do so or not. If there are three holes, he cannot use four, or if there are'four holes, he cannot use three. This necessitated the production of a clamp or hanger which could be used without the necessity of drilling the bowl, and my invention is designed for this purpose, and can be used on all styles and shapes of undrilled bowls. I p
. My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hanger securing a fragmentary portion of the bowl.
Fig. 2 is a view from the interior of the bowl, showing how the hanger contacts with its surface. Y.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken onthe line X-X in Fig. 2. v Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
It will be noted that in the drawings, I 3
have illustrated a specific form. of hanger, but I desire to be understood as using this form solely for the purpose of illustration, as the shape, contour and design of the hanger have no bearing on its mechanical operation, providing that it is constructed with the contact arranged to operate, as
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 191%.
1914. Serial No. ccassa will be apparent from the hereinafter contained description, that mine do.
As shown in the drawings, 1, isthe bowl, a fragmentary portion only being shown, as obviously the bowl forms no part of my .invention. My improved hanger or clamp 2, shown in the drawings, is providcdwith two downwardly depending members 3 and 4:. The member 3'extends down within the bowl, and is provided with a threaded portion 5, in whlch is mounted a screw 6, the end of which is adapted to contact with the inner surface of the bowl.
The outer member l, extends downwardly on the exterior of the bowl. As shown in the drawings, it contacts with the bowl at 7. The member 4, is also provided with two wings 8 ",Ad 9, which are also adapted to contact "with the surface of the bowl, thus providin for three points of contact on one si e of the bowl. The member 3, is provided with an arm 11, which is sufiicientl-y flexible to permit it being bent at any required angle to adjust the position of an electric socket which is mounted in a boss 12, internally threaded to secure said electric socket to the hanger, this arrangement having been found to be convenient for the connection of the electrical connections to the fixture.
As shown in Fig. 2, the screw 6, contacts with the bowl at a point inter'mecannot rock laterally or vertically but is held in 3. state of absolute suspension why a trio P In the clamp shown in the drawings, a branch 10, is provided at the upper end of the member 4, and serves as a hook to engage the lower end of the chain or other supporting means, a fragmentary portion only' being shown. It will be obvious, as stat that any form of hookor lock will serve this purpose.
Having described my invention what I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A hanger for bowls comprising a clamp having'three fixed members which contact with one surface ofa bowl, and an adjust able member adaptedto contactwith the other surface intermediate the three points.
i to straddle the 2. A clamp of inverted U-shape, adapted edge of a bowl, one member of which has three fixed points which contact with one surface of the bowl, an ad justable point mounted in the other member so located that its contacting point on the other surface of the bowl will be intermediate the three fixed points.
A hanger for light reflecting bowls comprising a clamp provided with three fixed members which contact with the outer surface of the bowl, and a member extending inside of the bowl having an adjustable contacting point mounted therein adapted to contact with the inner surface of the bowl at a point intermediate the three fixed points. 7
+1. A clamp of inverted U-shape adapted to straddle the edge of a bowl having convex and concave surfaces, one member of which has three fixed points adapted to contact with the convex surface of the bowl, and an adjustable point adapted to contact with the concave surface of the bowl interme diate the three fixed points.
5. A hanger for'light reflecting bowls comprising two downwardly depending members one of which extends down the outer surface of the bowl, and is provided with three fixed points of contact, said points being located on the arc of a circle the other member extending downwardly within the bowl, a screw mounted therein, the end of which is adapted to contact with the inner surface of thebowl intermediate the point of contactof the three fixed points on the other member. v
6. A hanger for bowls comprising a clamp having three fixed members which contact with one surface of the bowl, and an adjustable member adapted to contact with the other surface intermediate the three points, said clamp being provided with an arm formed of flexible material, there being an internally threaded boss formed at the extremity of said arm.
7. A clamp of inverted U-shape adapted to straddle the edge of a bowl, one member of which has three fixed tact with one surface of the bowl, an adjustable point mounted in the other member so located that its contacting point on the other surface of the bowl will be intermediate the three fixed points, a branch at the upper end of said clamp forming a hook.
S. A hanger for light reflecting bowls comprising a clamp having contacts for engaging one surface of a bowl, a holder for an adjustable contact, and a member in said holder adapted to engage the opposite surface of the bowl at a point between the points of engagement of the first mentioned contacts.
9. A hanger for light reflecting bowls comprising a clamp having contacts for engaging one surface of a bowl. and a contact adapted to engage the opposite surface of the bowl at a point between the points of engagement of the first mentioned contacts, and socket supporting means constituting extensions of the clamp.
10. A hanger for light reflecting bowls comprising a clamp having contacts for engaging one surface of a bowl, and a contact adapted to engage the opposite surface of the bowl at a point between the points of engagement ofthe first mentioned contacts, socket supporting means, and means for suspending the bowl constituting extensions of the clamp.
In testimony whereof, foregoing specification.
