A Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led November 11, 1915. Serial No. 60,864.
To all whom, it may camera:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Manchester, in the county of Wabash and State of Ido declare'thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will -enable others skilled in the art to which .it V appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyand to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in silos, generally, more particularly to door constructions or closures therefor.
The invention consists therefore of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the ap,- pended cla' Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1` is a vertical sectional view through ,the` doors taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is trating lthe door construction, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures.
In carrying out my invention, I employ two channel iron frame-pieces 8 suitably positioned to constitute the door-way orentrance of the silo. At inter-vals the channel iron frame-pieces 8 are perforated to receive the eye-bolts 9 to which the ends 10 of the ties 6 are fastened as shown in Fig. 3.
he door opening ofthe silo is provided with the usual cross-members 13 connecting the two vertical channel iron members together, and -I prefer to have every alternate cross-member 13 plvoted at one end as at- 14 and provided at the other end with a slot 15 for engagement with the 4outstanding pin or bolt 16, so that every alternate cross-mem ber 13 can be swung upwardly on its pivot 14 so as to enlarge the opening for 'the ready handling of the ensilage. The bars 13,' which primarily serve as rounds or treads of a ladder, as commonly provided for in' silos, for ready .access to the fastenings of the doors or closures, as in operating the closures or doors for the removal of the ensilage, are utilized or employed as means with which the closure fastenings cooperate being presented interiorlyto the ensilage.
a fragmentary elevation illus- .ing or fastening means is employed for lockvthe entrance-opening,
for securing the closures or doors in fastened closed or fastened open position, as before lndlcated, vthe closures or doors, of course,
eferring to the doors 17 it will be seen that each -is provided preferably with an ogec formation at its top and bottom edges which I prefer to cover with a felt or other suitable material 18, so that when the doors are in closed position they will insure closure, and
Each of the doors'l? has pivoted thereto at 20 a yoke 21 which in turn is pivoted to opposite eye-bolts4 9, so that each of said doors 17 can be swung from a closed position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5 up into an open position as indicated in said figure. It will also be seen that`all of the doors 17 are provided near their bottomV edges with pivoted. hook members 22, the depending hook end 23 engaging one of the cross-pieces 13 to lock and hold the door in a closed position. It will also be seen that the said hoolr members 22 are brought into proper operative position Whenthe door is in a raised position for effective engage# ment with another of said cross-pieces 13 to lock the said door in a raised position. .By means of this construction the same locking the doors, both in a closed and an open position, thus sim lifying the construction and providing an arrangement which is extremely convenient and at the same time strong, durable and eiiioient.
Having thus fully described the invention it 1s apparent that the construction is susceptible of certain changes and alterations, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such modifications yinstall within the scope 100 of the appended claim.
In a silo, the combination with 'lilmneb iron frame membersformingthe sides "of Aet 3 closures .for said entrance-opening, said chismes being supers posed with respect-to each other, hangers of general U-outline having their transverse portions pivotally connected to said closures, nearer the bottom edgesl of said closures than their top edges, the terminals of the arms of said hangers having connection with' said entrance-opening sides to enable the hangers to be swung upon their connections with the closures and said entrance-opening sides to cause the closures to be moved from their closed positions to their open positions, and a hookedfastening connected to each closure near its bottom edge, said entrance-opening side forming members having arran ed thereaeross transverse members' at points upon the edges of said sideforming members opposite the edges thereof to which the closures are applied, said trans verse members forming ladder rlmgs, cer-` tain of said transverse members being arranged with definite predetermined relation' to said hooked fastening to provide for engagement therewith when said closure is in a normalbv lowered position, said certain ladder rungs being disposed with definite JOSEPH E. GREEN.
