BARREL-STAND.
Specification of Letters Ifatent.

Application filed May 6, 1916. Serial No. 95,955.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Tillman and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel- Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved barrel stand and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character wherein the stand maybe easily shifted for mov- 1ng the barrel from place to place and of such construction that the said barrel may be readily tilted for emptying the contents thereof;
,The invention has as a further object to provide a device of this character having an improved form of supporting frame or '26 sling for the barrel and wherein the stand I will be provided with a stop member adapted to cooperate with the said sling and with the barrel for limiting the tilting movement of the barrel in opposite directions.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character wherein the barrel may be easily placed upon the sling of the stand and will be securely held in position thereon.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved barrel stand and particularly showing the construction of the supporting sling for the barrel, Fig. 2 isa perspective view showing the connecting bar for the sills of the stand detached and illustrating the clips provided for receiving the said bar,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showlng a conventional form of barrel in position upon the stand, and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation showing the manner in which the barrel is held in position upon the sling therefor.
In carrying out the invention, the body portion of the stand is formed with spaced parallel sills 10 which may be constructed of wood or any other suitable materialand which are provided with casters 11 of any preferred type. Rising from the sills 10,
' plates 16 are are coacting brackets 12 having downwardly diverging sides secured at their lower extremities, in any convenient manner, to the ends of the sills 10 and joined, at their upper extremities, by suitable straight connecting portions 13. Extending transversely between the forward sides of the brackets 12 is a bar 14 which is suitably connected,
at its ends, to the said brackets and provides a connecting member between i the sills 10 upon the adjacent side of the stand. Cooperating with the bar 14, are suitable brace members 15 which extend from the adjacent sides of the brackets 12 inwardly to the bar, as more particularly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings to rigidly support the said bar intermediate its ends.
Arranged beneath the rear extremities of the brackets 12 to seat upon the sills 10, are anchoring plates or members 16 which, at their outer extremities, are bent to provide downwardly extending lugs engaging over the outer edges of the said sills with the inner extremities of the plates projecting inwardly between the sills and provided with suitable openings 17. Preferably, the
secured to the sills by the fastening devices connecting the forward extremities ofthe brackets 12 to the sills. Extending transversely between the plates 16 is a brace bar 18 which, at its extremities, is-provided with laterally directed lugs 19 adapted to removably engage in the openings 17 of the plates, 16 to connect the sills 10 at the rear side of the stand. In this connection, it will be observed, as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, that the lugs 19 are arranged to bear, at their outer sides, against the inner faces of the sills 10 to cooperate therewith for rigidly holding the said sills in spaced relation.
Swingingly mounted upon the brackets 12 is a barrel receiving stand or sling which includes a substantially U-shaped supporting member 20 having the bight portion thereof presented toward the forward side of the stand with the extremities of the said member bent laterally in opposite directions to provide trunnions 21 resting upon the straight portions 13 of the brackets 12. Connecting the said supporting member with the brackets, are substantially U- shaped clips 22 which are detachably secured to the portions 13 of the brackets to fit over the said trunnions with the said portions 13 of the brackets providing bearings therefor.
One of the trunnions 21 of the supporting member 20 is, at its outer extremity, con-. tinued upwardly to provide an arm or handle receiving member 23 adapted to removably receive a piece ofpipe or other suitable element forming a handle 24. Depending from the inner extremities of the trunnions 21 is a substantially U-shaped frame member 25 having its ends bent about said trunnions to be secured, thereto and extending from the bight portion of the frame member 25 is an angle frame member 26 having one end thereof secured, in any suitable manner, to the said frame member 25 with its opposite end bent about the bight portion of the supporting member 20 to be connected thereto. Detachably connected to the frame member 25 is a clamping member or bail 27 which is formed of loosely connected sections. The free extremities of this clamping member are loosely fitted through the sides of the frame member 25 and are screw threaded to receive wing nuts or other suitable fastening devices 28 adjustable to clamp the said bail about a barrel in the manner illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the barrel being conventionally shown. It will be observed that the barrel is fitted upon the supporting sling therefor with the bight portion of the supporting member 20 embracing the barrel upon one side and with the clamping member 27 embracing the barrel upon its opposite side to cooperate with the said supporting member in firmly and efficiently holding the barrel in position. In this connection,.it will, of course, be understood that in mounting the barrel upon the sling, the clamping member 27 is removed, so that the rear side of the sling will be open and unobstructed to receive the barrel and the purpose of detachably mounting the brace bar 18 will now also become apparent since, it will be seen that by displacing the bar, the barrel may be rolled between the rear ends of the sills 10 when it then may be lifted to position upon the sling. Consequently, the barrel may be easily placed upon the stand since it is necessary to lift the barrel only at the time it is being placed within the sling.
As will now be understood, the handle 2 f may be operated to tilt the barrel forwardly for emptyingthe contents thereof. When the barrel is so tilted forwardly, the supporting sling therefor will be moved away from the brace bar 14, and the barrel may consequently be tilted until the upper extremity thereof is moved to engage the said bar. The bar 14: therefore provides a stop member adapted to limit the sling in its movement to invert the barrel with the upper extremity of the barrel resting against the said bar in which position, the barrel will be sufficiently tilted to entirely empty the contents thereof. Upon the movement of the sling to right the barrel, the bar 14 will engage the frame member 26 of the sling for limiting the sling in its movement in the opposite direction with the barrel disposed in a substantially upright position. The bar 14 therefore, while providinga connecting member between the sills 10, also provides a stop member adapted to coact with the barrel and with the sling for limiting the sling in its movement to tilt the barrel for emptying the contents thereof as well as to limit the sling in its movement to support the barrel in upright position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desiie to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described including a supporting structure having sills, means connecting the said sills adjacent one side of the said structure, anchoring plates associated with the said sills, a brace bar engaging said plates and extending between the sills adjacent the opposite side of the said structure, and a barrel receiving sling carried by the said structure.
2. A device of the character described including a supporting structure provided with coacting brackets, a sling carried by said brackets and including a bowed rock shaft swingingly supporting the sling upon the said brackets with the bowed portion of the shaft open at one side of the supporting structure, a frame member depending from the shaft, and a flexible clamping member having adjustable connection at its extremities with the sides of said frame member in a plane below the plane of said shaft and arranged to extend away from the bowed portion of the shaft for engagement around a barrel seated upon said frame member and received within the bowed portion of the shaft.
