D. DEE.
GRATE BAR.
AAAAAAAAAAAA IL-ED1UNE 5,1916- Patented Marl 27, 1917.

DANIEL DEE, OF POCATELLO, IDAHO, ASSIGNOR TO DEE MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF POCATELLO, IDAHO, A CORPORATION.
GnArE-BAR.
Application filed. June 5, 1916. Serial No. 101,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL DEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Grate-Bar, of which the following is a specification. r
The present invention appertains to grate bars, and is particularly an improvement over the grate bar disclosed in my Patent No. 1,064,820, granted June 17, 1913.
It is the object of the invention toprovide a grate bar of the general construction disclosed in said patent, and provided with novel means for the adjustment of the spindle or journal at one end of the bar, said means being extremely simple yet thoroughly effective.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated'in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the improved grate bar, portions being shown 1n elevation.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the grate bar showing the partsin engagement, and
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in position to permit of the removal, insertion, or adjustment of the spindle or ad ustable journal.
The body of the grate bar is composed of longitudinally spaced rings 1 connected by longitudinal ribs 2, said parts being cast from suitable metal, and the body is provided at one end with an integral outstanding journal or trunnion 3 to mount'the respective end of the bar for rotation. This bar is used with others of the same construction to provide the grate of the furnace, stove or the like, for supporting the coals, and when the bars are rotated, they serve to grind the clinkers and ashes,.as well as sifting them downwardly to the ash pit.
The present invention resides in the manner of assembling the spindle 4 with the Specification of Letterslatent.

body of the grate bar, to provide the journal' or trunnion at the opposite end of the body. Said spindle 4 projects within the tubular or'hollow body of the grate bar, at that end opposite the journal 3, and the spindle a is provided adjacent its inner end with collars 5 adapted to fit snugly within and to rotate slightlywith respect to the body of the grate bar. -The collars 5 are suitably spaced to hold the spindle flandbody coaxial or' in concentric arrangement. Thecollars 5 are of circular outline, with the exception that each collar 5 has its periphery cut away slightly on an eccentric curve,'as 'at6,
and'the collar 5 is provided between the ends of the cut away portion 6- with a curved notch 7. One of the ribs or portions 2 of the body is provided with a longitudinal series of spaced rounded lugs 8 having rounded notches 9 therebetween, and the bottoms of said notches are spaced slightly from the inner surface of the rib. The lugs 8 extendfrom the open end of the body to a point between the ends thereof, to provide for the proper adjustment of the spindle 4.
hen the spindle 4 and body are rotated relative to one another, so that the notches 7 are adjacent or in alinement with the lugs 8, as seen in Fig. 3, the spindle 4 can be inserted or removed, and can be adjusted to any desired position with respect to the body, whereby the spindle 4 and journal 3 will properly accommodate the particular fire box. l/Vhen the spindle 4 is brought to the desired position, and rotated with respect to the body, the edges of the collars 5 are moved into the respective notches 9 between the lugs 8, and due to the curvature of the portions 6, they will provide a cam or binding action, whereby to rigidly secure the parts in place. It is thus possible to adjust the spindle 4 in order that the grate bars can be applied to various furnaces, and the grate bar is composed of but two parts which can be readily cast or otherwise formed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A grate bar embodying a tubular body and a spindle projecting within the body, said spindle and body having interengageable portions to permit of the relative longitudinal movement of the spindle and body when they are turned to a certain position relative to one another, said portions being interengageable by a relative turning movement of the body and spindle to prevent the relative longitudinal movement of said parts at various adjustments thereof.
2. A grate bar embodying a tubular body having lugs, and a spindle projectable within the body and having means to fit snugly therein and provided with notches for the passage of said lugs, said means being'engageable with the lugs.
3. A grate bar embodying a tubular body having a longitudinal series of lugs, and a spindle projectable within the body and having collars to fit snugly in the body and provided with notches for the passage of said lugs, said collars being engageable between the lugs when the body and spindle are rotated l'elilillNG to one another.
at. A grate bar embodying a tubular body provided with a longitudinal series of lugs and notches therebetween, and a spindle projectable within the body and having spaced circular collars to fit snugly in the body,
each collar being provided with a cut away eccentric portion engageable 111 said notches, and said cut away port ons having notches for the passage of said lugs.
and a notch between the ends of said portion A for the passage of said lugs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL DEE.
