Description
UNITED STATES GEORGE S. GRIER, OF MILFORD, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,007, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GRLER, of Milford, in the county of Kent and State of Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Harvester-Reels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention will rst be fully described in connection with all that may be necessary to a full understanding thereof and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my improvements.
A is the pulley-shaft, having bearings in the frame A. a is the driving-pulley on one end, and a a spur-wheel on the other end of shaft A. B is a shaft, on which is placed a sleeve, w, that carries the spur-gear b and disks b1 b1. The shaft B works in an arc slot, c', of the bracket C, and the sleeve w has a bearing or support in the arm D. c are notches on the circumference of bracket C, into which the detent locks. F are arms of the reel, curved and bent so as to form right-angled shanksf. b1 b1 are disks with chord-grooves crossing each other, and in which the shanks j'A These Shanks fare, therefore, formed with Two bindrest. two iiat sides and cross one another.
ing-screws, b2 b2, serve to bind the disks tightly together, with the shanks f between them. By
this construction the circumferential sweep of the reel may be changed by the adjustment of these shanks f between the disks b1 b1.
Whenever it is desired to change the height of A the reel relatively to the cutter-bar the detent E is held back against its spring e, while the arm D, which is pivoted to the end of the pulley-shaft A, is moved about said shaft, either up or down. When the desired elevation or depression is obtained the detent locks with a notch on bracket (l, and the reel is adjusted. It will be observed that this can be accomplished independently of the pulley or its belt, and therefore may be done when the machine is in motion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The reel-shaft B and sleeve w, arm D, bracket G provided with are slot c, and the pulley-shaft A, constructed and arranged as shown and described, whereby the gear-wheel b may be adjusted without losing connection with the gear-wheel a', and thus elevate or depress the reel, as specitied.
2. The combination, with subject-matter of l first claim, of the sprng-detent E e and notched periphery of bracket C to lock the reel at any desired point.
