To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, -W. S'ronsrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmproven ents in Locking Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locking mechadeposit and collection receptacles, such as are used for the deposit of milk bottles, parcels, or other articles, in which a box is provided in an opening in a wall and having a door which opens to tire outside of a building and another door which opens to the inside of the building, the locking mechanism being so arranged that the outer door may be opened to permit the insertion of the articles, and automatically locked when the door is closed, so that said outer door cannot again be opened from the outside until released by the opening of tie inner door.
The object of the invention is to provide a locking mechanism which will be simple and inexpensive in its construction and positive in its action.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of the receptacle showing an elevation of the locking mechanism, on the line A, A, A, A, of Fig. 1, in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar section and elevation showing position of the mechanism after the outer door has been opened. Fig. 3 is a similar section and elevation showing position of the mechanism after the outer door has been closed and automatically locked. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sec tion of the receptacle and locking mechanism on the line C of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a part of the receptacle and the locking mechanism on the line B-B of Fig. 3. Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in the respective figures.
As shown in the drawings the several parts of the lock as assembled are attached to a plate which in turn is fastened to the inner side of the receptacle by the screws 21, 21. 1 is the inner door and the outer door of the receptacle and 2 and 18 ordinary fasteners attached respectively to doors 1 and 20 for keeping the doors closed. 4 is a lever, composed of the bar 14: and the arms 13 and 15, and is pivoted by means of the rivet 12 to the plate 10. has a hook 26 and is eXtendably attached to one end of bar 1 1 by means of bolt 7 and slot and coeperates with the catch 16 by means of the slot 19 and the spring 17 mounted on the inner surface of the outside door 20. 27 is a notch in the end of the arm 15 for engaging with the shoulder 28 on the spring 17. To the opposite end of bar 1 1 is.e-Xtendably attached by means of bolt 6 and slot 2 1, the arm 13 with lip 23 and which cooperates with the hook 3 mounted on the inner surface of the inside door 1. 5 and 8 are stops attached to plate 10 to restrict the movement of the bar 11 and the arms 13 and 15. 11 is a spring attached to the plate 10 for depressing the arm 15. 9 is a housing covering spring 11, the stops 5 and 8, the bar 14 and the rivet 12 and is attached to plate 10 by means of screws 22, 22.
The operation of this invention will be understood from the foregoing, but is more particularly described as follows: The door 20 being locked as shown in Fig. 3 it is desired to set the locking mechanism so that said door 20 may be opened for the introduction of a package into the receptacle, and the door 20 then closed and automatically locked so that it cannot be opened from the outside of the building. The door 1 is opened by the householder (Fig. 1) and on opening the hook 3 rides over the lip 23 of the arm 13, forcing the arm 13 down and the other end of lever 4:, which is arm up against the action of springs 11 and 17 and out of contact with the catch 16 and against the stop 5 where it is held by the action of the shoulder 28 on spring 17 resting in the notch 27.
The door 1 is then closed, (as shown by dotted lines) the arm 13 being out of contact with the hook 3. The door 20 is then opened from the outside and the action of sprin 17 holds the hooked end of arm 15 in the position shown in Fig. 1 until it passes through the slot 19 in catch 16, where the action of spring 11 on the lever l drops it to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2 against the stop 8.
The milk bottle or other articles are then placed in the receptacle. Before closing the door 20, lever 4 remains in a horizontal position by means of a hook 3 and stop 8. On closing door 20 the hooked end of arm 15, being beveled, rides up and over the bottom of slot 19 in catch 16 when the hooked I Copies of this patent may be obtained for and of arm 15 is forced downward over the bottom of slot 19 and the outer door 20 firmly looked as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that in closing the door 20 the arm 15 does not rise high enough for the shoulder 28 to engage in the notch 27, which only occurs when door 1 is opened as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a receptacle having an inner and an outer door, and. a mech anism for locking said outer door, said mechanism consisting of a lever having a lip on the inner end and hook on the outer end, with a notch on said outer end, said lever pivotally attached to a plate which is located intermediate of said doors, a hook on the inner door to cooperate with the lie on said lever a spring for holding said lever normally in a horizontal position, a catch on said outer door inclosing a spring having a shoulder to engage with a notch on the hooked end of said lever, whereby the hooked end of said lever is held out of contact with said catch when the lock is set by the action of opening the inner door.
2. Locking mechanism having, in combination with an inner and an outer door, a catch and a lever arranged in cooperating position, means connected to said inner door for operating said lever upon the opening of said inner door, said catch mounted upon said outer door and inclosing a spring adapted to engage said lever and hold the latter free from said catch so long as said outer door remains in a closed position and a spring in contact with said lever and adapted to throw said lever into operative position with said catch upon the opening of said outer door. 7
3. The combination of a receptacle, having an inner and an outer door, a hook mounted on the inner door, a catch mounted on the outer door, a lever pivoted between said doors and adapted to cooperate with said inner door by means of said hook and to engage with and lock said outer door by means of said catch, a spring for holding said lever normally in a locking position,
another spring inclosecl in said catch on said outer door and having a shoulder to engage with the locking end of said lever whereby the locking end of said lever is held out of operation with said catch upon the opening of said inner door, and whereby said lever is released from said inoperative position upon the opening of said outer door and then upon the closing of said outer door automatically locks the same.
