' saw, the invention being particularly in tended for use in cross-cut saws.
The purpose of the invention is to provide locking means whereby the sections may be quickly locked securely together and readily unlocked to detach the sections when desired.
The invention will be particularly eX- plained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a sectional cross-cut saw embodying my invention, the locking elements being shown in the unlocked positions.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side View showing the locking elements in the locked positions;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 Fig. 1; and
Fig. 1 is a cross section on the line 4. 1, Fig. 2.
ln carrying out my invention in practice, in accordance with the illustrated example, the sections 10, 11 of the saw blade are formed with mating tongues and recesses. The section 10 is shown'with tongues 12, 13 preferably of unequal lengths and corresponding recesses 14, 15 in the adjacent section 11 accommodate the said tongues. The tongues and recesses range lengthwise of the saw, the tongues being in the plane of the saw, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The formation of the longitudinal recesses 14, 15 in the section 11 results in longitudinal extending members 16, 17 and a longer intermediate tongue 25 on the section 11, the members 16 and 17 being at the back of the saw and adjacent to the toothed edge respectively, there being corresponding recesses 18, 19 in the opposed section 10. The tongue 25 is accommodated in a longitudinal recess 26 produced by and separating the tongues 12, 13, of the section 10, said recess 26 extending into the section 10 beyond the bases of the tongues 12, 13 to accommodatethe said tongue 25.. The walls of the several recesses and the edges of the tongues 12, 13, as well as the edges of the projecting members 16, 17, are t -shaped, the V-shaped edges of the tongues and projecting members being received inV-shaped depressions in the'walls of the recesses as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. at 20, and indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The end 21' of the projecting member 16 is oblique to the lon-- gitudinal direction of said member and the opposed edge of the-section 10 is correspondingly reentrant as' at 22. Similarly there is a tapered or pointed terminal 23 on the projecting member 17, there being a corre sponding V-shaped depression 2 1 in the sec tion 10 to receive said pointed terminal 23. r
the tongue 25 is utilized for this purpose and the mating recess in the opposed section is formed to co-act with the said tongue 25 in effecting the locking engagement of the sections, the locking engagement being produced as follows:' Said tongue 25 at its free end is longitudinally split as at 27 in order that the said end may be expansible. The sides of the tongue 25 may be continued parallel to the end. At the base of the recess 26 the side Walls 28 thereof are flared to accommodate the expanded terminal of the tongue 25. In order to expand the split end of the tongue 25 an oval expanding device 29 is'fitted in the said tongue and adapted to be given a partial turn therein. The said revoluble device 29 is accommodated in an opening produced by opposed concave depressions 30 in the tongue 25 in the opposed walls of the split and the Walls of said opening are V-shaped in cross section, as best shown in Fig. 4, there being a peripheral \l-sha'ped groove in the revoluble expanding element 294 The expanding member 29 may be formed of two separate disks having the edges thereof beveled and the bevels being oppositely disposed, thetwo disks being united by a rivet 31 or the like. in the expanding element 29, transverse holes 32, or equivalent depressions 'are formed adapted to receive a wrench of the type presenting two pins, the pins of the Wrench being ins ted in the said holes 32 to give a quarter turn to the revoluble element to dispose its major axis transverse the split 27, or to dispose said'axis in alinenient with said split. It e11 thus be seen that the sections may be instantly locked or unlockedfiby giving a quarter turn to the element 29, the said element 29 not only serving to effect the expansion of the tongue members but serving 5:
