ROBERT W. SHLE AND FRANK OBERKIRCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
vEHrc'L-E-WHEEL mm.
To aZZ 'whom z't may coacem:
Be it known that we, ROBERT W. ASHLEY and FRANK Onmincfi, citizens of the United States, residing at 1 in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful lniprovements in Vehicle-`Wheel Rims, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in demountable rims for motor vehicle Wheels and hasipartioular reference to that type of rim utilizing a detaohable top or tire oai'- rving rim, having associated therewith a 'plurality ,of looking retaining means adapted to receive a plurality of looking traction means arranged for engagement with a plu-4 rality of looking reception means associated `'vith the Wood felly and felly band of a moi tor vehicle Wheel.
The object of the invention is 'the providing of a felly band and wheel felly hav- -ing rnpunted thex'ein a pluralityf'of sup- `porting bolts,
and having mounted thereon a plurality or reception looking plates, and a top or thereon a plurality of reception looking cleats7 each cleat thereof being provided with means for receiving a plurality of traction looking plates mounted `on said plurality of ,supporting bolts, each looking plate thereof being` provided with means for exerting upon said top rim a contractive seating action and means for inaintainingj the annular position of said top rim. and means for preventingthe ciroiunferontial lino'vement of said top rirn on said fclly band.
lin the following is described in connection With the acooznpanying drawing one einbodiinent of the invention the features thereof being more particularly 'pointed outl hereinafter in the claims.
In the draivings, Figura 1 is a cross sectional view of the riin assembly; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of one of the traotion looking plates; Fig. 3 is a faceelevation of one of the traotion looking cleats mounted on the under surface of the top or tire oarrying rim having mounted thereon the plurality of looking retaining cleat-s; Fig. 6 is a detail specification of Letters Patent.

face lelevation of the' structure illustrated in Fig. 5 of the draxvings; and Fig. 7 isa cross sectional view of a channel, typeJ of top rim illustrating in connection therewith a new' form of detaohable split spring side ring for rims particularly applioable for use as felly bands for wire'wheels and like struotures.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the dravvings (1) indicates a Wood felly having mounted thereon a felly band provided at its rear edge'with a oonical shaped reception bead (8). felly `(1) .has mounted therein a plurality of standard bolts (4) provided with heads (5) engaging said felly band (2) at .the rear ends thereof being threaded as at (6) to re- Aedge. thereof, said bolts (41) at their outer ceive suitable looking means hereinafter desoribed. (7) indioates,,one` of a series of looking plates provided With asuitab'leaperture adapted to fit vover the ends of bolt's` (4:)
and is arranged .to be attached to vWood felly (1) by any suitable manner such as by Wood screws or other suitable means, and has vided Witha diagonally inclined reception surface (9).
(10) designates a topior ti're.c-arrying rim provided at its respective Iedges with tire beads (11) and having fastened on its undei' surface thereof a plurality of looking cleats (12) fastened thereto by means of rivets (13) and having formed on their "outer edges thereof depending hook (14) having suitably out or formed/therein a reception groove (15') adapted to receive the dependkey ;'(16) for-med on the hook end (17) of traction looking plates (18), the lower' end having formed thereon inwardly projeoting books (19) provided With abutting surfaces (20) adapted to engage and ride upon the diagonally inclined surfaoes. (9) on looking plates (7). Said traction looking plates (18) have forrned therein apertures (21) .which receive a plurality of sleeves (22) on look nuts (23), the same being hold therein by means of punching the projecting ends of said sleeves (22) back upon themselves in engagement with the inside surfaces of the looking plates (18). By arranging traction looking plates as heroinabove 'shown and described a positive lookmg means is provided 'Wherein in actuating Said Wood of said plates thereoff .formed thereon an enlarged head (8) prosame there' is exerted uponithe topor tire (farrjing rim a contractive seating action and when the parts are locked together the engagement of key (1G) in grooves in the respective looking plates provides a positive tnaction means or means for preventing any circnmferential movement of the top rim (10) on the felly band (2) and further provides a looking means adapted to prevent and obviate entirely radial expansive movenient of the top rinx as well as lateral wedginp; movement of said top or tire carrying rnn.
Referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, the structure therein shown comprises a to or tire carrying rim (24) having formec on its rear edge thereof a tire head (25) and at its front edge aI depending channel (26) adapted to receive a detachable split side ring (27) having fornied therein a support-` ing shoulder (28) and a depending` {iange (29) engaging said channel (2G), and heving fastened on its inner surface thereof a plurality of looking cleats (30) provided with reception slots (31) adapted to receive means associated with a demonntahle riin structure for exerting upon said top rim a contractive seating action to hind rizn to a suitable fcliy band,
