Specification of Letters Patent.

Application ink-5a ivoieiabr 24, '1915. sentano. c3258.
To all whom it may concern: v
Bo it known that l, 'CHARLES Gr. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garner, in the county of Hancock, State of Iowa, vvhave inventec'l cert-ain new and useful Improvements in `Harness-lalangers; and I do herebyd'eclare the following'to be a full, clear, and'eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the 'art to -`which it app'ertains to make and use the same.
This Iinvention relates to harness hangers for supporting harness in suspended position when not in use.
The object of the inventien contemplates a device for supporting harness, which may be secured on a flat wall or post and which will support theharne'ss in va convenient place, and positioned to be actuated by 'a person standing on ,the Hoor below the hook, whereby the supporting arm is easily disengaged from its locking element, to release the harness and in which the movement of the arm in one direction is limited.
To this end the invention essentially consists of a pivote-d arm for supporting the harness and having` its free end detachably connected to permit the harness to be attached thereto, and removed when desired, and which may be operated by a person of short stature or by children.
This invention consists of the novel features, details of vconstruction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the application, andy in which the reference characters indicate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1, is a side elevational view of the device upon a post, showing the hook in position, when the harness is suspended therefrom.
Fig. 9., is a similar View showing the hook swung to open position to receive the harness thereon.
Fig. 3, is a front elevational View.
Fig. 4, is a detail view of the latch element and operating rod.-
The device may be constructed from any suitable material and comprises a bracket 5, including a rectangular base 6, having apertures 7, for the reception of the fastening elements 8, by means of which the bracket 5, is fastened :on 'the wall of a stable, stall or suitable support. Projecting from the central part 'of 'the bracket 5, are the spaced pivot 1lugs 9, which may be formed integral .with the base or secured thereto in any suitable manner. l
Pivotally mounted between the vlugs 9, for vertically swinging movement, is the harness supporting hook arm 10, having an enlarged lower end 11, ape'rtured for the reception olf the pin 12, by which 'it is mounted on the, aforesaid lugs. The said lhoo-k is bowed outward and upwardly and terminates in a 'linger 13,*which'flatter is adapted for engagement bya latch element on the plaite 5,. 'and the linger-13, yis inwardly beveled at 13.
The latch element comprises a substantially 'rectangular plate or base 14, apertured for the reception of suitable fastening' devices 15. Transversely extending lugs 16, are secured to the latch base 14, and are apertured for the receptio-n of a bolt 17, which is slidably mounted therein.
The bolt 17 at its lower end is provided with a hook member 18, formed by bending the metal at this point, substantially inverted U-shape and the outer leg of the hook member is beveled at 18 and adapted to normally overlie the linger 13 of the harness supporting hook or arm 10. A coil spring 19, is arranged on the said bolt 17, between the lugs 16, and has one end secured to said bolt and the other end engaging the upper lug, so that the said bolt is normally tensioned downwardly in en- Y gagement with the said harness hook linger 13.
By providing the bolt and hook arm with the beveled portions, the hook arm, when swung upwardly will engage the bolt end and lift same against the tension of the spring 1,9 and be automatically locked.
The upper end of the bolt is provided with'an eye 20, through which passes the end of an operating rope 21, which in turn passes through an eye bolt 22, positioned immediately above the latch element in the frame or beam, and extending downwardly toward the floor.
A stopk 23 is formed on the enlarged portion of the hook and serves to limit the downward movement of the said hook, by engaging the outer face of the lower plate.
When it is desired to place harness or other articles upon the supporting hook, the
wire rod 21, is pulled downwardly, thereby lifting the bolt 17, against the tension of the spring 19, and consequently releasing the hook, which swings outwardly on its pivotal connection and such outward movement is limited by the stop 23.
`When the harness or other articles have been placed upon the hook, the latter is shoved upwardly and contacts with and elevates the bolt and is consequently locked in position.
The Weight of the harness will upon the rod 2l being actuated to release the bolt, cause the hook to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2, and the harness may be quickly detached therefrom.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and the method of operation Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to Which the invention appertains, and While l have described the principle of operation, together with the device Which I consider the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made when desired as are Within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- A ent is:
A harness support consisting of attaching plates, a hook pivotally mounted on one of the plates and having the terminal of its bill beveled, a spring` pressed latch bolt slidably mounted on the other plate and having one end bent upon itself and thence directed laterally and again bent in spaced parallel relation to the irst named bent portion whereby to provide a socket, the terminal of said last named bent portion being beveled and coperating With the beveled portion of the hook to retract the latch When the hook is swung to engage its bill Within the socket.
ln testimony whereof, l aflix my signa- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eaten's,
