FOLDING COT-BED.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BENJAMII I H. JONES, a citizenof the United States,'and a resident of the city of St. Louis Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cot-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal camp beds and metal cots for household, army orhospit-al use. The objects of the invention are strength, light weight, and compact form of the cot both open and closed, and noncollapsibility of the cot in the open position. The invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed,
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawlngs, wherein the same reference characters parts in the several views. In the drawin s, Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a folding cot bed embodying the invention, only the frame and legs thereof being shown;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a portion of the frame on the line'22' in Fig. 1, showing the manner of attachingthe wire spring or bed bottom; and
Fig.3 is a side view, the lower end of a leg invention. 7
Referring to the drawings, shown therein has ajointed partly" in section, of orming part of the the camp bed metal frame consisting of a middle section ll, ahead end" section 12 and a foot end section/1.3. Each section of the frame is com-posed of a bottom angle bar 14 and a top flat bar 15 which are spaced one over the other and are secured together at intervals by vertical ties or;
braces 16. The angle bar 14 is arran ed with one of its flanges in the same vertical plane with the top :bar 15, and the other flange is horizontal and projects inwardly inwardly projectin ,.-horizontal fl'a e of the angle 14 is dril ed with spaced holes 17 into which are hooked the ends of the helical springs 18 which sup ort the bed botric may be. used, wlre, canvas, and
of for su porting a mattress.
The en sections are hinged to. the ends and. State of v are spaced inside connection between the knob position of the joints for t stretched between Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 13, 191 Application filed June 4, 1915. Serial No. 32,033. I i
legs 20, arranged in pairs at eachend of the frame and connectedby horizontal cross braces 21. The upper ends of the legs 20 of the vertical flanges of the angles 14 below and are hinged to the vertical flanges. Stiifknee braces 22 hold the legs in open position. These stiff-knee braces are riveted to the inside of the vertical flanges of the an les, 14, and'to the outside of the legs, and oldinto the spaces between the legs and angles in closed positionof the, legs.
I The lower ends of the angle legs 20 are rounded'by bending the flanges around to form tubes, and are fitted with round hard wood knobs'23- on their extremities. A hole is bored into one side of each knob, and the rounded end of the leg is forced into this hole." The slight springiness of the metal is s'ulficient to make a very tight and secure and .leg, and one which will not loosen with the drying out or warping of the wood of the knob.
. It is evident from the foregoingfdescrip- 'tion that the cot-frame is strong ,and light, {that it canbe foldedwith spring and mattress i'n' place-into one-half its length and that it lnclose'siand protects the mattress when in foldedoondition, anchthat its round corners arenot' likely to injure objects with which it mayfcome in contact. The wooden knobs on thellegsprotect the floor while the bed is in -serv ice, a-nd prevent the ends of the legs whenlinfolded condition from doing in uryto neighborin objects.
he ends, of the frame at a considerable distance above thethe horizontal flanges The plane of the spring. results in the spring tending to hold the frame in open position and prevent it from folding up under sudden movements of the occupant as has he quently happened with" cots as heretofore made. I
' bars, and
g adapted lower angle The invention is not restricted to the exact construction shown and described, as it is evident that modifications in the shape and dimensions of the parts may without departing from the invention.
1- claim the following as my invention:
1. A folding cot having a sectional frame to receive a spring and mattress, each section of said frame consisting of a bar with one leg turned in and an upper flat bar spaced above said angle bar and secured thereto at intervals to stiflen said frame and inclose'said mattress, said angle bar and flat bar being rigidly connect-' ed at theirends, and pivot oints connecting the ends of said sections. y Y
2. A folding cot having a sectional frame adapted to receive a spring and mattress, adjoining sections of said frame comprising alining bars, said bars being arranged on edge and spaced apart one above the other, the bars of each section being secured together at the ends by plates rigidly fastened to each bar, said plates projecting above and beyond the ends ofsaid upper pivots connecting the projecting ortions 0 adjacent plates, whereby said plates stiffen said sections and permit foldbe made ing of one section over the adjoining sectlon.
3. A folding cot having a sectional frame adapted to receive a spring, each section of said frame consisting of a lower angle bar with one leg turned in and an u per fiat bar spaced above said angle bar an secured thereto at intervals to stiffen said frame, the ends of said sections butting against each other, pivot joints connecting said sections, said pivot joints being located above said upper flat bar, and aspring connects to the inturned legs of said lower bar and operating in open pos'tion to prevent closing up of said cot.
4. A sectional folding cot consisting of a middle section supported on legs and two end sections hinged to the ends of the middle section at their inner ends to fold over a spring supported by said middle section,
said sections and by the side members of the outer ends of said end sections, sai spring being positioned below the pivot axis of said joints, whereby it tends tohold said end sections in open position.
Signed at St. Loui Missouri, this 1st day of June, 1915.
