Be it known that I, JOHN A. GwiNNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle-Capping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My in vention relates to bottle capping machines; and the object of my invention is to provide a device for applying a special form of cap ot the crown type, which special cap is provided with a laterally extended projection forming self-contained means whereby the cap may be removed from the bottle.
rihese and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The crown cap of commerce is well known, and its mode of application is also a matter of common knowledge, but the usual crown cap is of such a character that it must be removed by special means, usually a tool with a claw designed to engage the flange and lift it oii'1 the bottle neck.
Caps have been provided with laterally extended projections whereby they form self-contained means to lift the cap from its seat on the bottle neck, but with the means heretofore employed it has been difficult, if not impossible, to seat these caps upon the bottle necks, and the object of my invention is the provision of means whereby the special crown caps, such as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, may be applied to bottle necks.
The general method of operation is substantially similar to that carried out in the use oi' the structure illustrated in the U. S. patent of Painter, No. 473,776, datedipril 2G, 1892, and the feature of my invention will be more particularly pointed out hereinafter in connection-with the accompanying drawings.
In Fig. l, l represents a stationary sleeve carried by the mechanism of the character above referred to, having a plurality oil" dogs 2 set in slots 3, and supported by means oi springs 4i, as illustrated, in position to engage and support a cap 5 when the same is introduced into position; such sleeve having a through tapered passage 6 for the capping plunger 7, and being cut away at 8 for the passage of the laterally extended tab or projection 5a of the special cap. l
The dogs are provided with springs whereby they are automaticallyprojected inwardly to support the caps in position; such dogs being automatically moved out of the way by the neck of the bottle as the latter is introduced into the capping sleeve. The wall of the passage in said capping sleeve is tapered so that as the bottle with its superposed cap is pushed into the same by the means usually employed for the purpose, the tapered walls of said sleeve passage will act upon the corrugated flange of the cap and press down the points of the same so as to cause the wall portions between the points to pass under the Hange of the bottle neck or head in the manner illustrated in Fig. 6. It will be noted that the projection or tab of the cap is provided with corrugations in line with those of the ange to stiften and protect the same.
In order to insure proper engagement of the cap adjacent the lateral projection of the same, the tapered wall of the sleeve passage may be specially sha'ped as indicated at 8'LL in Fig. l, whereby an extra pressure may be applied to the cap flange at the points m, Fig. 7, adjacent its junction with the lateral projection or tab 5a.
The engagement of the tapered wall of the through passage of the sleeve with the flange of the cap causes the latter to grip the bead at the head or neck end of the bottle; thereby holding the cap in sealing position. The clamping or pressing action applied to such jection bent up slightly before it is applied to the bottle neck, as shown at 5b in Fig. 8. In some instances, the clearance space for the lateral projection or tab of .the special cap need not extend entirely through the sleeve, and in Fig. 4, l have illustrated such an arrangement, in which a recess S" is provided to accommodate the tab or projection.
I claim:
l. In a device for bending flanged sealing caps having va laterally projecting tab into locking contact with the heads of bottles, the combination of a capping socket having a passage With a tapered Wall, a longitudinally movable cap plunger 1n said socket,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the said socket having a clearance space at one side for the free reception of the laterally extended projection or tab of the' cap, and provision for additionally crimping the flange of said cap adjacent its junction with the laterally extended projection or tab.
2. ln a device for bending flanged sealing caps having a laterally projecting tab into locking contact with the head of a bottle, the combination of a capping socket having a passage with a tapered Wall, a longitudinally movable cap plunger in said socket, said socket having a through space at one side of the tapered-Wall passage for the free reception of the laterally extended projection or tab of the cap, and provision `for additionally crimping said cap at the junction of the laterally extended projection or tab and the flange of the same.
