Be it known that l, ROBERTO FRITZ EMIL Onmssa, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Antigua, Guatemala, Central America, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boiler arranged without an ash pit within the boiler and capable of being used for the generation of dry or wet steam as desired.
In ordcrto accomplish the desired result, use is made of a combined hollow superheater and defiector located atthe rear end of the shell for directing the products of combustion from the fire box to the return fines and for generating steam in the said superheater and deflector. Use is also made of a tubular fire boX arranged within the shell.
A practical embodimentfof the invention is represented in the accompanying dralw-A ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi-v cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the boiler with the parts in position for generating superheated steam; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the same with parts of the combined superheater and deiector in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Y Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The boiler shell 10 is provided with the ends or'headsll and 12 connected with each other by the usual return dues 13.. Withinv the shell 10 is arranged a tubular lire box' 14 which rests upon rectangular frames 15 in the bottom of the casing. Four frames are preferably employed and they `are spaced apart to form longitudinal and transverse channels, and the frames are provided with apertures 19, which register with the'openings 17'and 18 in the bottoms of the casing and fire box. The grate bars 2O rest upon the frames 21 andbetween the said frames and resting uponthe frame 15, over.the transverse channel 16, is the hollow reinforcing grate supporting member 22, in which is the water feed pipe 24. A pipe 25 leads from the channel 16 for drawing olf y the sediment. Within the transverse and longitudinal channels are arranged stirrer rods 90 and 95 respectively, to stir up the sediment therein. rlhe rod 90 is adapted to be operated bythe handle 94 and the rod 95 by the lever 97. The above described construction forms the subject matter of the divisional application filed December 23, 1916, serial Nonsense. l
The construction shown at the bottom of the fire boX in F ig. -1 forms no part of the present invention.
The rear end ofthe lire boX 14 4connects,
' by the lire box iue 30, with a return compartment 31 formedby the shell head 12 and a combined superheater and delector 40 attached to the head 12by screws 41 o-r other suitable fastening means, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 8. The combined superheater and defiector' 40 is formed by spaced boiler plates 42, 43 and the frame 44 for holdingther plates spaced apart with a view to form` Va separate boilerV or superheater at the end of the shell 10. A pipe 45 having a valve 46 connects the water compartment of the shell 10 with the interior of the superheater andideiector 40 to fill the latter with water to the level of the water in the shell 10 whenever the boiler is used for generating wet steam and ,the valve 46 is open. For generating dry lsteam the valve 46 is closed. Within the superheater and deflector 40are arranged vertically disposed bail- le plates 50, 51 and 52 to insure circulation 'of the steam within the superheater and deflector, as hereinaftermore fully eX- plained. The bottomof the superheater and deiector 40 is provided with a manhole 53 for gaining access to the compartment 31 forlcleaningout soot and the like. The top of the combined superheater and deiiector 40 is provided with' a steam outlet pipe 60 having a valve 61 from which leads a pipe 62 for conducting the superheated or wet of the shell 10 is providedwith an outlet pipe 70 having a valve 71 connected by a pipe 72 with the pipe 62. The pipe 70 is connected by steam pipes 7 3 with the interior of the combined superheater and deflector 40 at theV sides of the baille plates 50 and 52, as plainly indicated in `Fig.2. When the boiler is in use andthe valves 46 and 71 are closed and the valve 61 is openthen the steam generated in the shell 10 passes by way of the pipes 70 and 73 into the combined superheater'and deflector 40 in which the steam is caused to circulate by the use of the baie plates 50, 51 and 52, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. The steam by coming in contact with the highly heated inner plate 42 is quickly superheated and passes out of the combined superheater and deilector by way of the pipe 60, valve G1 and pipe 62. The valve 71 is closed when it is desired to use the superheated steam from the superheater and deflector 40, but when it is desired to use wet steam then the valve 61 is closed and the valve 71 is opened so as to allow the steam generated in the shell 10 to pass by way of the pipe 70, valve 71, pipes 72 and 62 tothe place of use.
It is understood that when the boiler is in use the products of combustion from the burning fuel in the lire box 14 pass by way of the flue 30 into the compartment 31 in which the products of combustion are deflected by the superheater and deliector 110 so as to pass through the return flue 13 to the usual breeching 8O arranged on the front end of the boiler.
lt will be noticed that the products of combustion in passing into the compartment 31 highly heat the combined superheater and delector -lO so that the water is quickly converted into steam and the steam generated in the shell 10 can Vpass into this su` perheater and del-lector el() by way of the pipes 73 in case the valve 71 is closed and the valve 61 is open.
The boiler shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boiler, comprising a shell, a lire box built in the shell, a flue leading from the rear of the fire box to the rear end of the shell, return flues above the fire box and extending from the rear end of the shell to the front end thereof, a combined hollow superheater and deflector concave on its inner face and comprising spaced plates secured at their edges to the rear end of the shell, the superheater and delector forming with the said end of the shell a return compartment through which the products of combustion are directed from the said lire box tube to the said return flues, a valvcd water pipe connecting the water compart- Vment of the shell with the interior of the said combined superheater and deflector at one side thereof to supply the latter with water, a valved outlet pipe leading from the top of said superheater and delector at the central portion thereof, a valved outlet pipe leading'from the top of said shell and having a valve chamber and valve, the valve chamber' being connected by a pipe with the outlet pipe leading from the superheater and delector, and steam pipes connecting the outlet pipe leading from the top of the shell with the steam compartment of' the superheater and deiector at opposite sides thereof, the bottom of the superheater and deflcctor being provided with a manhole for gaining access to the said return compartment.
2. A boiler comprising a shell, a re box in the shell, a iiue leading from the rear of the fire box to the rear end of the shell, return flues above the re box and extending from the rea-r end of the shell to the front end thereof, a combined hollow superheater and deflector on the rear end of the shell and forming with the said end of the shell a return compartment for directing the products of combustion from the said fire box tube to the said return lues, a valved water pipe connecting the water compartment of the shell with the said combined superheater and deflector to supply the latter with water, a valved steam outlet pipe leading from the top oi the superheater and deflector, an outlet pipe leading from the top of the shell and having a valve connected by a pipe with the said outlet pipe leading from the superheater and deiiector, vertical baille plates in the said superheater and deflector, and steam pipes connecting the outlet pipe leading from the top of the shell with the interior of the superheater and deflector at the outer sides of the outer baille plates.
3. A boiler comprising a shell having an outwardly flanged head fitting within the rear end of the shell, a lire box built in the shell, a flue leading from the rear of the lire box to the rear end of the shell, return flues above the lire box and extending from the rear end of the shell to the front end thereof, and a combined hollow superheater and deiiector consisting of spa-ced boiler plates and a frame for holding the plates spaced apart, the said superheater and delector being concave on its inner fa ce and the edgeK oi' the said plates and the said frame extending within the flange of the head and engaging the rear end of the shell, and liastening means extending through the shell and the flange of said head and engaging the superheater and deflector to secure the same in position on the shell.
