To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY l/V. PLUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the 'countyof Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented anew and useful Surgical Tourniquet, of' which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to certain improvements in tourniq'uets or hemostatic bandages and it is an object'of the invention to pro-' vide a device of thisgeneral character of a novel and improved construction whereby the same may be readily and effectively applied to a limb within a minimum of time cluding a novel and improved compression member capable of direc'tendwise thrustin one direction and which is; moved endwise-in an opposite direction upon axial'rotation thereof whereby said'secon d; endwis'e movement is gradual and. undercontrol.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a novela-nd improved device of this general character which includes a flexible'band or strip adapted to-be drawn about a limb together with a compression member capable of quick'adjustmentagainst passage of blood through said artery is 'obstructedor retarded and whereby said compression member may only be adjusted away from the limb gradually so that the flow through the. artery may be again and quickly stopped in the event an operation is not entirely completed.)
The invention also consists in the details of construction and in theoombination and arrangements of the several parts ofj'my 1mpro'ved tourniquet whereby certain important advantages are attained and whereby the'de vice is rendered simple, inexpensive, and otherwise convenient andadvantageous for use, all as will hereinafter be more fully set forth. The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. a

,As disclosed in the accompanying drawings '1, denotes an elongated band or strip, preferably ofsteel, and which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced knobs 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. k 5

The block 1 is provided with the transversely arranged opening 3 through which the free end portion of: the band or strip. 1 is adapted. to be disposed and when said band or stripis drawn about a limb, the knobs 5, hereinbefore referred to, will 00- actwith the side face of said block as indiand conveniently relieved by disengaging the knobs from said face of the block.' will also be understood that when strain is imposed upon said band or strlp, the knobs 5'will readily pass through the opening 3.
It is also thought to be self evident that the inherent resiliency of the band or strip 1 will cause a. knob carried by a portion of the band or strip extended through the opening 3 and beyond the block 2 to engage with a face 6 of the block 2 in substantially an automatic manner.
The top face of the block 2 is provided with a recess or pocket 18, preferably rectangular in form and which has in commu nication therewith an opening 13 disposed through the block and having a smooth bore and loosely disposed through the opening 13* is the endwise movable compression member 7 having in swivel connection with one end thereof, as at 10, the partispherical head or knob 9 adapted to be pressed firmly against the flesh to close an artery when the device is in applied position upon the limb.
The intermediate portion of the compression member 7 is provided with the beveled threads 7 which permit the member 7 to freely pass through the locking member 14: when it is desired to force the head Or knob 9 intocontact with the flesh.
As herein embodied the locking member 1 1 comprises two separated sections adapted to engage with the threads 7 a and which are normally maintained in such engagement through the medium'of the spring 15 coacting with the peripheries of the sections as is believed to be fully shown in Fig. 6 of the accompanying drawings. As herein embodied, the spring 15 comprises a split ring formed of resilient material. It is also to be noticed, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings, that the portions 16 of the sections of the member 14,
. engaging with the threads of the member 7 having their upper surfaces beveled and which coact with the beveled portions of the thread to assure an unobstructed movement of the member 7 toward the limb.
It is preferred that the sections 1 1 of the locking memberbe semi-circular with their apposed straight edges provided with registering semi-circular recesses 1 1 whereby an opening is afforded through which the member 7 is directed.
It is also to be noted that the coaction between the member 14: and the threads 7 of the member 7 is such as to permit movement of the head or knob 9 away from the limb only upon requisite axial rotation be given to said member 7 and for which reason the outer end of said member 7 is provided with the operating member 8, herein disclosed as a circular head having its periphery serrated or knurled for obvious reasons.
A material advantage is afforded by the particular manner in which the member 7 is operated as a quick and unobstructed endwise movement may be given to the member to cause the same to impose the proper pressure upon an artery when the device is applied to a limb and the member 1 1 holds the same normally against retrograde movement. The outward movement of the member 7, as afforded by the axial rotation thereof, assures a gradual release of the pressure upon an artery so that in the event an operation is not entirely successful, the pressure upon the artery can be quickly restored without undue injurious effect upon the patient.
The outer or openface of the recess 18 is adapted to be closed by the removable closure plate 12 held in applied position by the screws 11 or other suitable means and. it will be understood that said plate is provided with a suitable opening through which the member 7 is freely movable in either direction.
I also find it of advantage to provide the free end portion of the band or strip 1 with a suitable opening 1 to afford means whereby a finger or a suitable implement may be engaged with the band or strip to assure said band or strip being engaged around a limb with a maximum of pressure thereon.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a tourniquet constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assent bled and employed, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and -modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction and arrangement of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as herein-- after claimed.
I claim:
1. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band coacting with the block, a compression member disposed through said block and having unobstructed direct endwise movement in one direction, said member being operable independently of the band, and automatic means for holding said member against movement in an opposite direction.
2. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band coacting with the block, a compression member disposed through said block and having unobstructed direct endwise movement in one direction, said member being operable independently of the band.
3. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band coacting with the block, acompression member loosely disposed through said block and operable independently of the band, and means for retarding the movement of said compression member in one direction.
5. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band, a compression member loosely disposed through the block and provided with beveled threads,
a locking member carried by the block and comprising relatively movable members normally in engagement with the-threads, and
yieldable means for maintaining the last named members in their normal positions.
6. A tourniquet consisting of a. block, a limb embracing compression band coacting with the block, and a compression member carried by said block and having unobstructed movement in one direction and movable in an opposite direction upon axial rotation of the member.
7. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band coacting with the block, a compression member carried by said block and having unobstructed movement in one direction, said member be-, ing movable in an opposite direction upon axial rotation of the member, and a head swiveled to said member.
8. A tourniquet consisting of a block provided with an opening therethrough, and a flexible band secured at one end to the block sertible through the opening of the block said band being provided with protuberances coacting With the block for holding the band against retrograde movement when inserted through theopening.
9. A tourniquet consisting of a block provided with an opening therethrough, a resilient flexible band secured to said block and insertible through the opening of the block said band being provided with protuberances coacting with the block for holding the band against retrograde movementwhen inserted through the opening.
10. A tourniquet consistingof a block, a limb embracing compression band, a compression member disposed loosely through the block and provided with beveled threads, and an expansible locking member coacting with the block and the threads of the com pression member.
11. A tourniquet consisting of a block, a limb embracing compression band, a compression member disposed loosely through the block and provided with beveled threads, a locking member coacting with the block and the threads of the compression member, said locking member comprising two pivotally connected members, and spring means coacting with said members for maintaining said members normally in engagement with the threads of the compression membeix HENRY W.
