More particularly the inventionv relates to filling replenishing looms making use of filling` carriers having feeling slots in the barrel thereof such as are illustrated for example in the patents to William Parker Straw No. 906,748 granted December 15, 1908, No. 1,053,673 granted February 18, 1913, and No. 1,092,959 granted Japril 14,
191i. When this type of filling carrier isemployed it is necessary that the slot therein shall be positioned in a definite relationy to the feeler in orderthat the latter may work properly. Consequently the butts of the filling carriers are provided with suitable positioning means, usually slabbed or flattened surfaces generally in planes atV right angles to the longitudinal planes of the slot, and these surfacesare engaged by suitable Jaws within the shuttle to retain the filling carriers in position. The fillingcarriers are carried in the hopper and fed therefrom by the transferrer as upon the call for filling replenishment, but when a filling carrier is forced from the hopper toward the shuttle it frequently rotates more or less and is not infrequently driven into the shuttle jaws in improper position. As
a result the feeler fails tol operate or a smash is caused.
I-Ieretofore ithas been proposed as in the patent to Alonzo E. Rhoades No. 1,167,863 granted January 4, 1916 to provide a vertically movable device which shallvseize the positioning faces of the filling carrier and move down with 'the filling carrier maintaining it in position until it is forced into the shuttle. l A
In my prior application Serial No. 76790, filed February, 7, 1916, I have also disclosed guiding means which are fixed against vertical movement but which move rearwardly and forwardly and which engage with the fill-ing carrier and prevent rotation of the filling carrier during transfer so that by reason of this engagement as the filling carrier moves downwardlyduring transfer and thus moves downwardly with respect to the guiding means the filling carrier is held against rotation while at the Sametime the guiding means moves rearwardly concurrently with the lay, thus enabling the filling carrier readily to be directed intoI the shuttle in proper position. The present invention is in its main features subordinate of that of my aforesaid prior application. The present vinvention presents a guiding means which as in my prior applicationis fixed against vertical bodily movement but which is pivo-tally mounted to 'secure the necessary rearwardv and forward movement'to enable it to move concurrently with the lay duringtransfer.
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated the guiding means is also pivotally mounted upon the hopper and as shown upon the axis of the hopper.
In theusual type ofl rotatable hopper wherein-the bobbin seats are radial it has been found that" the rotative movement of the filling 'carrier `under the action of the transferrer tends to displace the positioned filling carrier as it ispresented to the shuttle particularly if the guides forthe base of the filling carrier engage the filling carrier as the shuttle comes beneath it.
The invention therefore further consists ina hopper in which the, filling carrier seats are inclined to the radii of the hopper' combined. with a guiding means in which the guiding surfaces or elements form continuations of or are `parallel with the filling carrier seats of the hopper so that during transfer the positioning elements of the filling carrier will remain inclined to the shuttle whereby the rotativo influence of the transferrcr upon the filling carrier will be neutralized by this inclined arrangement and cause the filling carrier to be properly positioned during the last portion of the thrust of the transferrer.
rlhe present invention also provides a guiding means which receives its movement rearwardly from the downward thrustof the filling carrier being transferred and its forward movement under the action of a spring so that no direct connection with the transferrer or a positive connection with any other moving part of the loom is necessary.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.

In general construction the loom may be and preferably is of the usual Northrop type of automatic filling replenishing loom including a rotatable battery, feeder or hopper comprising parallel disks between which the filling carriers, such as bobbins, are mounted in a circular series. The disk 1 which is shown herein is provided with seats 2 having their walls 3 extending in a direction inclined to the radii of the hopper.
rlhe hopper is rotatably mounted upon a shaft or stud 1 rigidly secured to the usual hopper stand 5 which is itself secured to the loom frame. rlhe circular flange 6 on the hopper stand surrounding the disk 1 protects the heads of the filling carriers or bobbins and retains them in place until they reach substantial transferring position from which point on the bobbins are retained in their seats by a bobbin support 7 yieldably mounted upon a stud 8 projecting from the hopper stand. This bobbin support yields upon passage of the bobbin from the hopper and serves also to force the bobbin in contact with an abutment 9 which directs the bobbin in its passage from the hopper into the running shuttle.
The abutment 9 is secured to the hopper stand and preferably presents a curved face concentric with the path of the transferrer 10 which is pivotally mounted upon a stud 11X on the hopper stand. The transferrer 10 is of the well known type, being provided with a depending arm 11 through which it is actuated upon call for lilling replenishment and with a head 12 having a curved face 13 adapted to engage the base of the bobbin. rlhe transferrer is normally elevated through the action of a spring 14C and is depressed to effect transfer through the usual connections to the depending arm 11.
rlhe hopper may be rotated by any suitable mechanism to bring the bobbins successively into transferring position. A usual type of actuating mechanism which is illustrated herein comprises a dog 15 pivotally mounted upon; a stud 16 carried by the transfer arm, said dog having a tooth 17 adapted to engage the teeth of a ratchet wheel 18 which is integral with or secured to the hopper.
Upon the downward movement of the transfer arm to thrust a bobbin into the shuttle the dog drops from one tooth to another and upon the upward movement of the transfer arm causes the rotation of the disk or hopper one step to bring the leading bobbin of the series into contact with the abutment 9 and thus in position for transfer. The reverse rotation of the hopper is prevented by a counterweighted pawl 19 preferably mounted upon a stud 20-projecting from the hopper stand and having its opposite end engaging the teeth upon thcratchet wheel 18 as is usual in constructions of this character.

In looms of this character a narrow space lntervenes between the hopper and the shuttle when the latter is in transferring position and the action ofV the transferrer upon the bobbin which is in rolling contact with the abutment 9 tends to rotate the bobbin so that the positioned faces will not be properly engaged by the guides 27 of the shuttle,
lil-J furthermore it sometimes happens during transfer that one of the guides 27 strikes the edge of the faces 24 upon the bobbin vbases and rotates the bobbin so that it is improperly thrust into the shuttle jaws or occasions a smash.
ln the present invention there is provided a guiding means which is pivotally mounted preferably on the hopper and which is fixed against bodily vertical movement'. This guiding means in the construction illustrated operates upon the filling carrier intermediate of the hopper and shuttle to preserve the rotative position of the filling carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle and which preferably is adapted to be moved rearwardly and concurrently with the movement vofthe lay as the latter approaches transferring position so that the base of the filling carrier will be guided positively until it is thrust into the jaws of the shuttle. rlhe movement of the guiding means also serves to prolong the period in which the guiding means is in registry with the shuttleV and aids in insuring proper transfer. 1
A preferred form of guiding means illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a conveyer 30 in the form of a chute having parallel walls 31 which when in normal position form continuations of the Walls 3 of the recesses 2 of the hopper. This conveyer may convenienty be formed as the integral offset portion of an arm 32 pivotally mounted upon the shaft t of the hopper. In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated herein the hopper stand is provided with a cylindrical offset portion 33 providing a hub 34C for the cylindrical bearing member 35 of the arm 32. A radially offset portion 3G preferably is also provided to receive the arm 32 and -to provide for a limited movement thereof. A spring 37 seated against the wall of the offset portion 36 and bearing against a lug 38 upon the arm 32 serves normally to maintain the conveyer 30 with its walls 3l in alinement with and forming continuations of the walls 3 of the bobbin seats 2 as aforesaid. The arm 32 may be guided by a boss extending through a .slot in the stand and having a washer 32X secured to its end to overli'eV the slot.
"lV here as in the present construction the walls of the bobbin seat are inclined tothe ra dii of the hopper the action of the Atransfer arm in thrusting a bobbin from the hopper into the shuttle will rotate the hopper slightly since the bobbin is normally held in contact with the abutment 9 liy the bobbin support 7. i By reason of the fact that the walls 31 of the conveyer are similarly inclined to the radiiof the hopper the action of the transferrer arm moves the conveyer laterally 'against the force of the spring 37 as the bobbin is thrust toward the V meaning and scope of the following claims.
It is also to be understoodl that while the invention has been described particularly with reference to its use upon bobbins having feeling slots in their barrels, the invention is also useful for insuring proper transferring of bobbins of ordinary character into the running shuttle.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fillingreplenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a lling carrier into the shuttle, and rearwardly and forwardly movable guiding means fiXed against vertical bodily movement and provided with a chute acting to receive and direct the filling carrier during 'its passage from the hopper to the shuttle, said guiding means being movable rearwardly into registry with the shuttle by the filling carrier as the latter is forced from the hopper into the shuttle by the transferrer.
2. A filling repleni'shing loom comprising a hopper adaptedto contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the saine to thrust a filling carrier into the shuttle, and yieldable means provided with inclined guiding instrumentalities located intermediate of said hopper and shuttle and normally maintained in communicative relation toisaid hopper and movable into registry with the shuttle by the filling carrier as the latter isforcedfrom the hopper into the shuttle by the transferrer. 3. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier into the shuttle,"pivotally mounted guiding means for said filling carriers located intermediate of said hopper and shuttle, resilient means for normally maintaining said guiding means in communicativeV relation with the hopper and acting to permit said guiding means to be moved rearwardly into registry with the shuttleby the filling carrier as the latter is forced froml the hopper into the shuttle by the transferrer.
4:. A filling replenishing loom comprising a rotatable hopper having peripheral recesses to support filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust the filling carrier into the shuttle, guiding means intermediate of said hopper and shuttle pivotally movable about the axis of said hopper, and means for normally maintaining said guiding means in communicative relation with a recess in said hopper and acting to permit said guiding means to be moved rearwardly into registry with the shuttle by the filling carrier as the latter is forced from the hopper into the shuttle.
5. A filling replenishing loom comprising an intermittently rotatable hopper provided with peripheral filling carrier seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from said hopper into the shuttle, and a conveyer intermediate of said hopper and shuttle having walls normally forming continuations of the Walls of said filling carrier seats and acting to receive the filling carrier as it is moved from the hopper and to preserve the rotative position of said carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle.
6. A filling replenishing loom comprising an intermittently rotatable hopper provided with peripheral filling carrier seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from said hopper into the shuttle, and a conveyor intermediate of said hopper and shuttle having walls normally forming continuations of the walls of said filling carrier Aseats and acting to receive the filling carrier as it is moved from the hopper and to preserve the rotative position of said carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle, said conveyer being movable rearwardly into registry with the shuttle by the movement of the filling carrier under the infiuence of the thrust of the transferrer.
7. A filling replenishing loom comprising an intermittently rotatable hopper provided with peripheral filling carrier seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from said hopper into the shuttle` and a conveyer, pivotally mounted upon the axis of said hopper and located intermediate of said hopper and shuttle, having walls normally forming continuations of the walls of said filling carrier seats and acting to receive the filling carrier as it is moved from the hopper and to preservethe rotative position of said carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle.
8. A filling replenishing-loom comprising an intermittently rotatable hopper provided with peripheral filling carrier seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from said hopper into the shuttle, and a conveyer, pivotally mounted upon the axisof said hopper and located intermediate of said hopper and shuttle, havingl walls normally forming continuations of the walls of said filling carrier seats and acting to receive the filling carrier as it is moved from the hopper and to preserve the rotative position of said carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle, said conveyer being movable rearwardly into registry with the shuttle by the movement of the filling carrier under the influence of the thrust of the transferrer.
9. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier into the shuttle, an abutment to guide the filling carriers in their passage from the hopper to the shuttle during transfer, and pivotally mounted guiding means movable rearwardly and forwardly and provided with instrumentalities to engage with and to preserve the rotative position of the carrier as it is transferred to the shuttle.

A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier into the shuttle, an abutment to guide the filling carriers in their passage from the hopper to the shuttle during transfer and a pivotally mounted conveyer intermediate of said hopper and shuttle having guiding means to preserve the rotative position of the carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle.

A filling replenishing loom comprising an intermittently rotatable hopper provided with peripheral bobbin seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from said hopper into the shuttle, an abutment to guide the filling carriers in their discharge from the hopper to the shuttle `and yieldable conveying means movable by the filling carrier under the thrust of the transferrer located intermediate of the hopper and shuttle to preserve the rotative position of the carrier unchanged as it is transferred to the shuttle.
12. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted 'to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling` carrier into the shuttle, and pivotally supported guiding means fixed against vertical bodily movement and acting to engage the filling carrier and to preserve the rotative of filling carriers, a transferrer and means j for actuating the same to thrust a lling carrier into the shuttle, and means pivotally supported upon said hopper adapted to engage the filling carrier and to preserve the rotative position thereof during its passage from the hopper to the shuttle.
14. A lling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers, a transferrer movable in a circular arc for transferring a carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, and a movable conveyer intermediate'of the hopper and shuttle having means for preserving the rotative position of the filling carrier as vit is transferred from the hopper to the shuttle and moved rearwardly by said filling carrier under the thrust of the transferrer.
15. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of lling carriers, a transferrer movable in a circular arc for transferring a carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, a stationary abutment having a curvature concentric With the path of the transferrer to guide the bobbins in their discharge from the hopper to the shuttle, and a movable conveyer intermediate of the hopper and shuttle having means for preserving the rotative position of the filling carrier as it is transferred from the hopper to the shuttle and moved rearwardly by said filling carrier under the thrust of the transferrer.
16. A filling replenishing loom comprising a rotary hopper provided With peripheral bobbin seats inclined to the radii of the hopper, a transferrerl movable in a circular path for thrusting the filling carriers from the hopper into the shuttle, a stationary abutment having a curvature concentric with the path of the transferrer to guide the filling carriers in their discharge fro-m the filling carrier bobbn seats during transfer, and a conveyer intermediate of said hopper and shuttle having guiding Walls acting normally to form continuations of the Walls of said filling carrier seats, 'said conveyer being movable by said filling carriers under the thrust of the transferrer into registry With the shuttle.
17. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper having a circular head with a radial offset portion providing a recess, a shaft mounted in said head, a rotatable hopper having peripheral lling carrier receiving recesses and pivotally mounted uponV said shaft, and a conveyer located intermediate of the hopper and shuttle having a supporting arm located in the radial recess in said head and means for thrustingthe filling carrier from said hopper into said conveyer.
18. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper'h'aving a circular head With a radial odset portion providing a recess, a shaft mounted .in said head, a rotatable hopper, having peripheral filling carrier seats inclined to the radii of said hopper, a conveyer located intermediate of the hopper and shuttle and having Walls adapted to form continuations of the Walls of the filling carrier seats, said conveyer having a supporting arm located in the recess in said head, a spring for normally maintaining the conveyer in registry with the filling carrier seats in the hopper and a transferrer adapted to thrust the filling carrier from the hopper into the lshuttle whereby the movement of the filling carrier under the thrust of the transferrer will position the conveyer in registry With the shuttle.
19. A lling replenishing loom comprising a hopper adapted to contain a plurality of filling carriers provided with positioning instrumentalities, a transferrer and means for actuating the same to thrust a filling carrier from the hopper into the shuttle and pivotally supported guiding means fixed against vertical bodily movement and acting to engage With the positioning instrumentalities of a filling carrier during transfer vvhereby as the filling carrier moves along the guiding means it Will be prevented from rotation with respect thereto and delivered to the shuttle in predetermined position. l
20. A filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper having a circular series of holders to receive the bases of lling carriers having a feeler slot in the barrel and aguiding instrumentality at right angles to the plane of said slot, a transferrer andname to this specification.
