INTERNAL-GOMBUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. ii, 191 7.
Application filed September 25,1316. Serial Ila. 121,912.
State of Ohio, have invented a new and.
useful Improvement in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in internal combustion engines. z I
The principal object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for lubricating the piston of an internalcombustion engine in such a manner that little or no carbon will be deposited in the cylinder. The lubricant that I preferably employ is water, which, when used, will leave no deposit of carbon; and if a small quantity of oil is employed in my improved lubricating means, the carbon deposited will be almost negligible. I
The preferred form of embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, of which the figure is a sectional view of an inthrnal combustion enginecylinderprovided with my improved lubri eating means for a piston shown therein.
Throughout 'the specification and drawing, similar reference characters denote cor responding parts.
In a detailed description of the preferred fOl'lll'Qf embodiment of my invention, the
numeral 1 designates an explosive engine cylinder, provided with a water jacket 2 and spark plug 3.- Movable within the cylinder 1 is a piston 4 to which a connecting rod is attached by means of a wrist pin 6.
Provided in the lower end of the cylinder 1 is a stufling box 7 which is preferably formed by so enlarging the lower portion of the-bore 8 that a space, rectangular in cross section, is provided to receive the following arts. Surrounding the piston 4 in the stuffing box 7 is a metallic member 9 containing an annular chamber 10. This chamber is open around the said piston for the purpose of delivering a lubricating fluid thereto. This fluid is preferably water; since the latter contains no carbon, and is admitted to the chamber 10 by the following means, although any other suitable construction for this purpose ma be employed witln out departing from the spirit of my invention.
Con'innmicating with the annular chamber 10 is a tubular passage 11. which extends through the side wall of the member 9. As
the latter is movable within the stutling. box
f, the passage 11 is adapted to be brought into registry with a similar tubular passage 12 which extends through the cylinder Wall This follower is pressed against the packing 15 by bolts 16 which enter the cylinderwall from below, after being passed through an annular rim or flange 17 that extends laterally fromthe bottom portion of the fol- '-lower. The packing 13 and 1a is designed not'only to prevent leakage of the lubricating fluid past it, but'also to support the movable member 9 which contains the lubricating chamber 10. However, any other suitable means for supporting, the latter may be employed if desired. i
It is now obvious that the lubricating fluid is supplied entirely by the annular chamber 10 of the ,member 9 through which the piston 45 passes at the lower end of the cylinder. Water can be effectively, employedas the lubricating fluid in my irnproved construction, although oil may be used if desired. ferred, since'no carbon will be deposited thereby in the cylinder. On the other hand, if oil is used, very little carbon will be deposited. since thepacking in my improved lubricating device is arranged to thoroughly wipe the reciprocating piston.
I do not wish to be limited to the s-tails of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or modifications may be made therein within the scope of the subj'oined claim.
Having described my invention, I claim:
