To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL VJ. HALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Shade Attachments, of'which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to shade roller supports of the class wherein the roller is ar ranged to be moved vertically over the window to cover or uncover any desired por-- tion of the window, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and inorease'the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of-the invention is to provide a device ofthis character which may be constructed to fold into small space for shipment or storage.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device may be applied without material structural change to windows of various sizes and adapted to rollers of various forms and lengths, but is designed more particularly for use in connection with the ordinary spring shade rollers,
and forthe purpose of illustration is shown arranged to support a roller of this character. I
The improved device comprises a bracket device including a body portion 10 adapted to be secured by screws or other similar suitable devices 11 to the window casing, indicated as a whole at 12 above the window opening and likewise above one of the stiles or side members of thecasing, preferably the stile at the left, as shown in Fig. 1. At its upper end, the body 10 is provided with a lateral extension 13 and with a similar lateral extension 1 1 at the lower end. Pivoted at 15, in the body 10, are cable guide pulleys 16 operating side by side and likewise operating through a slot in the body 10.
Attached to the opposite side of the window casing, is a similar body 17 having lateral terminals 181 9 and secured to the casing by screws or other similar'suitable devices 20. Pivoted at 21, in the body 17, is a single cable guide pulley 22, the latter pulley operating through a slot in the body 17 in the same manner as thepulleys 16 of the bracket 10. A cable 23 extends through the extension 14: and is attached to an eye 24 upon a threaded rod 25 which extends through the extension 13 and adapted to receive a thumb nut 26. A similar cable 27 extends through the extension 19. and is attached to an eye 28 upon a threaded rod 29,,the latter having a thumb nut 30 operating upon the upper face of the extension 18. At its lower' end; the cable 27 is attached to a small holding device or bracket 31 attached to the right. hand stile of the window casing, and is thereby. supported. By this means, it will be obvious that the cable 27 maybe strained longitudinally by actuating the thumb nut 30, and the cable thus maintained with sufficient rigidity.
Connected through the extension 14; is another cable 32 which extends downwardly in parallel relation to the cable 23, and the two cables 23 and 32 connected to rings in the opposite ends of an evener or compen sating member 33, as shown more clearly in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The member 33 is pivoted intermediate its ends at 341:0 a bracket or standard 35, the latter in turn being attached to the window casing by screws or similar devices.
I the strain'being applied downwardly to the By this arrangement, it will be obvious that when the thumb nut 26- cable 32 and upwardly to the cable 23 through the co-action of the evener member 33. The cables 23-32 are thus maintained in rigid condition through the action of one single thumb nut 26.
Slidable upon the cable 23, is a clip oevice 36 having a socket 37 to receive the squared or flattened journal 38 of a spring roller, represented conventionally at 39. A similar clip 40 is arranged to slidably engage the cable 27 and provided with a socket to receive the round or circular ournal 41 of the roller. By this means, as the clip devices are moved vertically upon the cables 27, the roller 39 will be carried with them. as will be obvious.
Slidably engaging the cable is a U- shaped frame 42, and pivoted at 43 between the sides of the member 42, is a lock lever 44, the latter having a knife-edged terminal, indicated at 45, to engage the cable 32 when in one position and thus lock the member 42 relative to the cable. At its outer end, the member 44 is provided with a pull cord 46 extended into convenient positionv for the operator.
Connected to the clip device 40, is a supporting cord or cable 47 which extends over the single pulley 22 and thence over one of the twin pulleys 16 and thence to the lock member 44. A similar pull cable or cord 48 is connected to the clip device 36 and extends thence over the other twin pulley 16 and thence to the lock member 44. The window shade portion of the improved device is in dicated conventionally at 49 and provided with a stiffening member 50 at its lower end, of the usual construction, and with guide eyes 5152 engaging the cable members 2327. By this simple arrangement, it will be obvious that a downward pull upon the member 46 will release the member 44 from engagement. with the cable 82 and thus enable the roller 39, together with its clip devices 36-40 to be elevated to a position above the window opening. The shade 49 can then be drawn downwardly to cover anyrequired portion of the window opening in the ordinary manner, the shade and its roller, when in this condition, operating in the same manner as the ordinary shade roller. If it is desired to uncover a portion of the upper part of the window opening, a downward pull upon the member 46 will release the member 44 and permit the roller 39 to move downwardly by gravity to any. requiredextent, and'when the roller is in the required position, the member 46 is released and'the gravity of the roller will at once cause themember 44 to grip the cable 32 and thus support the roller in the required position. The roller may thus be disposed at any required point relative to the window opening within the range of the movement of the member 42 and its lock lever 44, and any portion of the window opening thus covered by the shade 49, as will be obvious.
lVhen the device is to be shipped or trans ported, the cables 23-27 and 32 are rolled into small space, packed together with the bracket clips and other parts in a suitable inclosure. The improved device may thus be sold to the trade in packed or knockecdown condition and occupy a relatively small space.
The improved device is simple in construe tion, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied without material structural change in the window or roller.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a shade roller support, bracket devices adapted to be attached to a window and having cord guides, a strain applying device carried by one of said bracket devices, an evener member adapted to be pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said window, a guide member connected at one end with said evener member at one end thereof and at the other end to said straining appliance, a locking member guide connected respectively with the evener member at the other end andto one of the bracket devices, a shade roller slidably supported relative to said guide, pull members connected to said roller and bearing over said cord guides, and a locking device carried by said pull members and adapted to be engaged by said locking member guide.
2. In a shade roller support, bracket devices adapted to be attached to a window and having guide pulleys, a strain applying device carried byeach of said bracket clevices, an evener member adapted to be pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said window, a guide member adapted to be connected at one end to said window and at the other end to the straining appliance of one of said brackets, a coacting guide member connected at one end to said evene-r member at one end thereof and at the other end to the straining appliance of the other bracket device, a locking member guide connected respectively to the evener member at the other end and to the last mentioned bracket device, a shade roller slidably supported relative to said coacting guides, pull mem- .bers connected to said roller and leading over said guide pulleys, and a locking device carried by said pull members and adapted to be engaged with said locking member guide.
