Description
1 APPLICATION FILED 1,216,628. d Patented Feb.20,1917.
JOSEPH' J. rnnscx, orvInG-INrA, MINNESOTA.
' Brr.
Application mea August a1, v1515. serial No. 46,663.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. a citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Bit, of which the following is a speciiication.- .l
The device forming thej subject' matter of this application -is a bit adapted to be employed in connection" withdrills which have a combined reciprocating and rotary /m'ovement. Y l
The invention' aims 'to provide a bit of this type which is adequately reinforced, between its spiral llange's,.by spiral ribs.
Another object of the invention is so to construct the spiral flanges and the ribs, as to the working end of the bit, that the bit will be reinforcedat its extremity.
Another object of the invention is to iin-T provev the construction lof the bit so that the same will bey practically self-sharpening, and remain in operative condition,l without wearing off or breaking, even when the bit is employed on a hard and resisting materia It is ,within the province of the disclosure toimprove generally and to enhance the util- -ity of devices of that type to'which the present invention appertains.
With. the' above and other objects in view whichI will appearas the description proc eeds, the invention resides in the combinatlon and arrangement of parts and in the.
details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being v understood that changes inthe precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can bel made within the scope ofWvhat' is claimed, without de-v parting from the spirit of the invention.
the accompanying drawing f Figures l and 2 are side elevations wherein the bit forming the subject matter of this 1application is viewed at right angles, in the respectiveviews, parts'beingbroken away;
Fig. 3 is a cross lof Figa-1; Y
Fig. 4; is anend elevation of the bit;
Fig. `5 is a or bar of material ing the subject matter of this applicatlon is fashioned. ,L

cross section showingthe strip out of whichV the bit form-y Patented Feb. 2o, 191.7.
\ The bit forming the subject matter of this' l application "is fashioned from a bar 1 having opposed longitudinal fins 2,and opposed ,longitudinal ridges 3 disposed lapproximately at right angles to the lins2. The
are of small lateral extent compared with the flIlS 2.'
A bar of the sort above described is twisted, so that the bar proper 1' becomesa central body 4, the fins 2being transfo'med into-spiral anges 5, and the ridges 3 transformed -into spiral ribbon-like reinforcing ribs 6 located betweenthe flanges i 5 and havingthe same twist as the flanges; The edges 50 of the` ribs' 6 cooperate with 'the' flanges- 5 to which aid in retracting the rial adjacent the body 4. The flanges -5 are prolonged ^to forma flattened head 7, the terminal edges 'of loosened matewhich may be,inclined as shown at 8 tol -deline apoint 9, the edges .8 being beveled olf in oppositev directions as shown at 12.
'The reinforcing ribs 6 are prolonged to' and the end edges of the enlargements 11r at 14 to correspond eing inclined as shown to -the inclination of the The portion of the is made from a'l good grade of steel, properly tempered for thework in hand. The shank 15' ofthe bit is assembled with the edges 8 of the head eing l form spiral lgrooves 515 rldges 3are ofrectangular cross section and l' bit above described l4 body portion thereof after the latter has been twisted, the shank 16 and a collar 17 th reciprocating drill.
The structure herein ,disclosed is so con- 15 including a tang adapted. to cooperate with structed that its working end may bereinforced, and so that it will be reinforced throughout the length of its spiral' portion. The material loosened as the bit recipro- Acates will becarried rearwardly, as the bit rotates. In Fig.. 5 of the drawings, have been shown at 53 as ,of lform at their longitudinal edges.
gitudinal -edges of the lianges, however, as shown at 50 in Fig. 6, ma be beveled, or, as shown at 51 in Fig.- they may be rounded. Y y Fig. 8 of the drawings will serve to illusthe flanges The lone tool-.receiving 4element of a rotary and l' rectangular right angles to the fins, rectangular cross section Having thus described the invention, what A bit fashioned fromja bar having opposed fins and opposed ridges disposed at and beingrof small lateral extent compared withthe fins, the
the ridges being of fbar being twisted to form a central body, to
transform the ins into spiral alges, and Ito `transform the ridges into ribbon-like ribs reinforcing t e body, the flanges projecting outwardly beyond the ribs, the edges of the ribs coperating with the flanges to form spiral grooves which aid in retracting the loosene materialadjacent the body.
In testimony' that I claim thev foregoing as my o wn, I have hereto aHiXed my signature in the,presence of two Witnesses. JOSEPH J. TEASCK.V Witnesses: l
