PLUMB, LEVEL, AND SQUARE.
Application filed July 22, 1916.
To all whom z'zfmay concern:
Be it known that we, Josrrrr E. GAeNoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, J GEN A. HAWTHORNE, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the countyof'Dela-w-are, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Plumb, Level, and Square, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of an implement or device which is adapted to be converted into a plumb, a level, a square, and an inclinometer, and forms various kinds of squares as a try square, T-square, miter, etc., the novel features being set forth in the claims that follow the specification y The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentali-ties thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 represent side elevatlons of a device embodying a plumb,
level and square, embodying our invention, the members thereof being in different positions in the several figures. I
Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section on the line w ac Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 represents a transverse section of a portion on the line g y Fig. 2.
4 ig. 7 represents a side elevation of a portion of a modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring" to the drawings.
1 designates a graduated blade in which is the longitudinally-extending slot 2, the latter receiving at one end the screw 3, the head 4: whereof overlaps the walls of said slot, and the shank whereof enters a threaded opening eccentric in the disk 5 in which are lips 6 turned-out from the same and engaging the adjacent edge of the blade 1, thus firmly connecting said disk with said blade.
7 designates a stock which carries the easing of a spirit-bubble 8 firmly secured thereto in any suitable manner, adapting the stock to form a spirit-level as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In one side of what may be termed the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917. Serial No. 110,662. b
head of the stock which is formed of double walls is the circular opening 9, the wall whereof is freely mounted on the circular disk 5, whereby said stock may be rotated on the latter and so change its angle with respect to the blade 1.
On. the end of the screw 3 opposite to the head 4 isthe thumb nut 10, whereby the stock 7 may be which it may be placed on the blade 1, it
s the stock. may be placed at the end of the lads, at the center thereof, or intermediate of its ends, so as to form a try or T-square, a miter, and other kinds of squares, and a protractor as desired, some forms of which are shown in the different figures.
In the stock 7 is the longitudinally-extending slot or recess 11, in which the blade may be received or folded in. some of the positions in which the blade and stock be placed, see Figs. 1 and 5.
The other side of the is cut screw 3 which head 4: projects into said 'recess, and said bar 14 receives the shank of the screw 15 which enters a threaded opening in the center of the disk 5 and carries the thumb nut 16 which is adapted to tighten the stock on said disk in the position in which either said stock or the blade may be placed with relation to each other.
It is evidentthat vice may be manlpulated to form a plumb or inclinometer of the latter, or convert it into a spirit level, different kinds of squares, a rule, or measure, the latter being due to the graduated blade 1.
Owing to the graduations on the disk 5,
on, relatively to the desired angle of the latter, so as to be easily read ofi".
The end of terminal of that b the stock 7 to the full extent of said slot one of the lips 6 may clear said end of the blade and permit the stock to make a full turn on the disk with the screw 15 as its center and tightened in the position in may the members of the de connection for thus change the position of the stock from that shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. t for purposes requiring the same.
In Fig. 7 we show pins 18 inserted in the disk 5, the same being adapted to abut against the adjacent edge of the blade 1 in lieu of the integral lips G, and operate in connection with the screw 3 to retain said disk on said blade.
The entire device may be formed of metal which renders it strong, durable, light and comparatively inexpensive.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A blade, a stock, a circular member on said blade, the head of said stock being rotatively mounted on said member, a central connection for said blade and member, and a stop on said blade adapted to engage a wall of said head to limit the rotation of said stock.
2. A blade, a stock, a circular member on said blade, the head of said stock being rotatively mounted on said member, a central said stock and member, a threaded member extended axially through said circular member, and means on sai circular member and blade adapted to connect the latter member and blade.
3. A blade, a stock, said blade, the head of said stock being r0- tatively mounted on said member, a central connection for said stock and member, a threaded member extended axially through said circular member, means on said circular member and blade adapted to connect the latter member and blade, and means for tightening said threaded member.
l. A blade having a longitudinally-extending slot therein, a stock, a circular member on said blade, the head of said stock being rotatively mounted on said circular member, a central connection for said blade, and a threaded member adapted to'"*pass through said slot and engage with the walls thereof to enter said circular member eccen- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
a circular member on trically in an opening therein, and means for tightening said threaded member in position.
5. A blade having a longitudinally-extending slot therein, a stock, a circular member on said blade, the head of said stock being rotatively mounted on said circular member, a central connection for said blade, a threaded member adapted to pass through said slotrand engage with the walls thereof and to enter said circular member eccentrically, and a lip on said member adapted to engage the edge of said blade opposite to said threaded member thereby connecting said blade and circular member.
6. A blade, a stock having in its head a recess forming a diametrical bar, a circular member on said blade, said stool: being rotatively mounted on said member, means for centrally connecting said member with said bar, a threaded member for eccentrically connecting said circular member with said blade, said threaded member being secured to said blade and having its head freely enter said recess and adapted to limit the rotation of said stock.
7. In a device of the character stated, a blade, a stock, a blade, a device for adjustably colmecting said stock with said blade, means for pivotally mounting said stock on said circular member, said stock having a head formed of a plurality of walls, between which portions of said blade are movable slidingly and rotatably, one of said walls being rotatively mounted on said circular member, the other wall having therein a recess adapted to receive freely the head of the device that connects said stock with said blade as a stop for limitingthe rotation of said stock in its opposite directions on said blade.
