Application filed August 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LRnUnnN M. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltlalad City, in the county of Oneida. and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Imprrwements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates broadly to latches and more particularly to a gate latch.
As the primary object thereof, the invention contemplates the provision of a gate latch for automatically latching a gate when it is closed, and has means associated with this latching means for raising the same to permit of the opening of the gate.
Another object of the invention resides in the constructiolr of the latching casing formed from a single piece of sheet metal having means therein for receiving a projection which extends from the gate and means for guiding the latching means.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming apart of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention in position on agate post or barn door frame.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation showing a portion on the casing removed to illustrate advantage in the means for mounting the latch rings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like and corresponding parts throughout the different views, I have associated with a barn door frame 1 my improved latch which in the present instance comprises a casing generally designated and formed desirably from a single piece of sheet metal. tinuing from the lower wall of the recess projects at right angles therefrom and serves as a securing flange at, while securing flanges i. extend at right angles from the respective ends of the upper and lower walls of the recess 3 and bear agaii'lst the frame so as to prevent transverse movement of the entire casing with respect to the frame. As is apparent the portion of the blank where the recess 3 is provided lies within a con1- plemental recess in the frame while the up per wall. of the recess is struck out to provide a guiding slot 5 and a securing flange (3 which is bendable upwardly at right angles so as to bear against the frame door as is apparent upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. The portion 7 continuing immediately from the upper wall of the recess 3 extends at right angles therefrom and in spaced parallel relation with the frame 1 and is bent inwardly until it abuts the frame thereby providing a recess 8 which accommodates the latching mecha nism in a manner to be hereinafter de scribed. A securing flange 9 extends from the upper wall of the recess 8, The securing flanges sand 9 are anchored to the frame by bolts 10 and nuts 11.
The latching mechanism in the "present instance consists of two rings 12 mounted in spaced parallel relation between the lower end of the portion 7 and the securing flange (3 by means of bolts 13, the latter being anchored in the frame by means of nuts 1 L. As is apparent these rings lie adjacent the outer edge of the recess 3 so that when the projection 15 on the gate strikes the ad jacent ring it willv be lifted to allow the projection to strike the other ring and because the latter ring is arranged adjacent the end of the slot, it will not be raised, when the first mentioned ring after being raised will fall into its lowermost position so as to automatically latch the projection between the two rings. It is to be noted that the securing flange G incidentally coacts with the lower end of the portion 7 in guiding the movement of the rings. In order to raise the rings to permit of the opening of the gate I have slidably mounted rods 16 in the upper wall of the recess 8, the lower ends of these rods being looped as at 17 and respectively engaged about the rings 12 while the upper ends terminate in finger engaging loops 18 whereby they may be engaged and lifted to consequently raise either of the rings so as to remove the gate projection 15.
It is thought from the foregoing that the detailed description and operation of the device is unnecessary; however at this point attention is directed to the peculiar and efiicient construction of the casing which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and ar rangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gate latch including a casing formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to provide a recess adapted for receiving part of a gate and bent in an opposite direction to provide the outer wall of a latch mechanism receiving recess, an engaging flange struck out from the upper wall of the first mentioned recess for establishing communication between the recesses, latching rings supported between the outer wall of the last mentioned recess and the engaging flange and adapted to engage the projection of a gate, independent means for lifting either of-the rings, the movement of the rings being guided by the engaging flange and the outer wall of the last mentioned recess, and means for securing the casing in position.
A gate latch comprising a casing formed from alsingle piece of sheet metal bent to provide a transverse recess and further bent in an opposite direction to provide another transverse recess, an engaging flange struck out from the upper wall of the first mentioned recess for providing a slot to consequently establish communication between the recesses, a pair of locking rings, common means passing through the last mentioned recess and the engaging flange for mounting the rings and adapted to anchor the casing to a gate post or frame, the rings being adapted to automatically engage a projection of agate or door, rods slidably mounted in the upper wall of the last mentioned recess and connected to the rings whereby the rings may be raised out of engagcment with the gate projection, flanges extending at right angles from the front walls of the recess, and means for anchoring the flanges in position.
