Patented Feb. 13, 191?.
Application filed January 9, 1915. Serial No. 1,395.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST E. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full,-clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in squares, and has for its principal object to provide a square which is provided with extensions for each of its arms in order that the size thereof may be increased.
Another object of the invention is to provide a square which may be taken apart and placed in the pocket or other convenient place for transportation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a square having a number of inserts which will enable the user to use the square under any conditions, thereby eliminating the necessity of carrying a number of squares of different sizes.
A still further. and more specific object of the invention is to provide a square having novel means for holding the extensions in place to prevent the same from being accidentally removed and also to avoid any danger of the extensions moving with relation to the arms of the square.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forthin the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 illustrates a fragmentary top plan view of a square constructed in accordance with this invention showing the extensions in place,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of one of the inserts.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the main body of the square comprising the arms 2' and 3. Each of these arms is provided with a dove-tail groove 4 which extends longitudinally thereof and throughout its entire length. Suitable recesses 5 are formed in the upper faces of the arms and communicate with the dovetail grooves through the grooves 6, the use of which will appear hereinafter.
The inserts which are designated generally by the numeral 7 each comprise the main body 8 having formed thereon the reduced dove-tail extensions 9. These dovetail extensions are designed to extend into the dove-tail grooves 4 and cooperate with the side walls thereof in holding the body 8 in place.
Formed at the extreme ends of each of the dove-tail extensions 9 is a suitable slot 10 which is designed to aline with the grooves 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A suitable transverse aperture 11 is formed near the end of each of the dove-tail extensions 9 and these apertures are designed to receive the pivot pins 12 which extend through the apertures 13 formed in the stems 14 of the locking member designated generally by the numeral 15. The free end of each of the stems 14 is formed with transverse lugs 16 thus forming a T-shaped structure which is designed to fit into the grooves 6 and recess 5 to engage the walls thereof and lock the inserts 7 in place.
The free terminal of each of the dove-tail extensions 9 is inclined upwardly and outwardly as at 17 in order to form a Hush and tight joint against the end walls of the dovetail grooves 4.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use when it is desired to extend the arms of the square, the user slips the dovetail extensions 9 of the body 8 of the inserts into the dove-tail grooves 4 of the main body 1 of the square and after the same have been forced inwardly as far as they will go, the locking members 15 are then pressed downwardly so that the extensions 16 engage'the bottom wall of the recess 5 and the stems 14 lie in the grooves 6, it will I thus be seen that the inserts 7 will be held against longitudinal movement and thus considerable length may be added to the square. It will also be noted that when in this position the upper face of the square is flush throughout its entire length and the device may be used in the ordinary manner.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A separable square comprising a body having arms arranged at right angles to one another, each of said arms provided with a dove-tail groove extending longitudinally thereof throughout its entire length, said body provided on its upper face with recesses which communicate with the inner ends of said grooves respectively, and inserts comprising body portions each having a reduced dove-tail extension at one end thereof, said dovetail extensions adapted to extend into one of the dove-tail grooves of the arms, said extensions each provided with a slot at its end and arranged centrally of Copies of this patent may be obtained for the side edges of the extensions, said slots being in alinement respectively with the recesses of the body, and locking members comprising stems, one end of each is pivotally mounted in the slot of one of the extensions, and transverse lugs formed on the free end of each stem, said lugs adapted to fit in the respective recesses of the body holding the inserts against longitudinal move ment with relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
