To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, BELLE D. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fort Gay, in the county of l/Vayne and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mattresses and Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

By referring to the drawing it will be seen that the present device comprises a frame which is adapted to occupy one end of the bed to facilitate the raising of a patient to a sitting position. Of course, it should be understood that both ends of the spring may be similarly constructed if so desired or only one end may be constructed in accordance with the illustration set forth in thel drawing.

It will be seen that the present invention comprises a pair of hinged leaves constituting a lower hinge section 1 and an upper `hinge section 2. The sections 1 and 2 coin- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

prise a substantially iii-shaped framework having centrally located ribs 3, and the inner ends of the frames 1 and 2, as well as the ribs 3 are bent to constitute hinge portions l for the purpose of receiving a pintle rod 5. This rod 5 carries a plurality of' hooks 6 which are adapted to engage the loops 7 car ried by the adjacent section of the mattress for holding the two sections kof the mattress firmly together. A plurality of hooks S are supported upon the sides of the frame 2, and these hooks 8 are adapted to engage the loops 9 upon the outer sides of the mattress 10 for firmly holding the mattress in a set position upon the spring and prevent the mattress from being accidentally detached from the springs.

The upper section 2 of the frame is provided with a plurality of ears 11 upon the periphery thereof, which ears engage the laterally extending ends 12 of the hooks 13. rlhe hooks 13 are provided with upwardly turned ends 14 which are adapted to iit in the apertures 15 formed along the edge of the lower section or frame 1, and in this manner firmly hold the twosectio'ns closely together such as illustrated in `full linesI in Fig. 3 of the drawing. It should be understood that the top section may be covered with wire mesh or spring mesh as indicated by the numeral 1G, of suitable construction.

A plurality of spring receiving caps 17 are supported upon the frames 1 and 2 at suitable points, and these caps are provided with sockets 18 for the purpose of receiving the coil springs 19. The sockets 18 are so disposed as to permit the several sections of the mattress supporting frame to firmly lie together, but as soon as the hooks 18 are released the springs will force the outer side of the section 2 upwardly to the position in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and permit the person to be easily moved from one side of the bed to the other. As stated above, one section of the mattress may be provided with an aperture 20 which is normally closed by means o'f a plug 21, which plug is provided with beveled sides 22 and carries a loop 23 for facilitating the removal of the plug 21 from the aperture 20 when so desired.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient means has been produced for facilitating the convenient supporting ofthe mattress in engagement with the supporting frame or spring, and also that a very Asimple and eiiian inclined position.

The lower frame l is provided with a hinged plate Q5 near each end thereof, which plate is provided with a plurality of alined apertures 26, which apertures are adapted to fit over a projecting finger 27 carried by the upper section 2 or upper frame 2 of the spring. It should be understood that this linger 27 by tting in one of the apertures 26 will firmly hold the two sections in a correct closed position according to the desire of the operator.

It should be understood that the present device is adapted to assist in raising a patient to a sitting position whereby an attendant can easily move the patient from one side of the bed to the other without the necessity of first lifting the person manually for the reason that the springs 19 will raise the head of the bed or mattress to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 when the latch members are released therefrom.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

As a new article of manufacture, a mattress, a frame for supporting a portion of said mattress, said frame comprising an upper and lower portion hingedly connected ltogether and being similarly constructed,

spring pockets secured to each section of said frame adjacent the corners thereof, springs interposed between said pockets and adapted to yieldably force the outer ends of said sections apart, pivotally mounted hooks secured to said upper sections provided with upwardly turned lower ends, said lower sections provided with a plurality of apertures for -receiving said hooks, said hooks being adapted to hold said sections against upward swinging movement while in a normal condition, pins carried by said upper sections and projecting beyond the edges thereof, a pivoted latching plate secured to said lower section and provided with a plurality of vertically alined apertures formed therein, said apertures adapted to lit over said pins for holding one section of said frame in an adjusted relation with respect to the other section, means carried by said upper frame for holding a portion of the mattress thereon, and said latching plate being adapted to extend beyond the upper face of the upper section for permitting the same to be easily and conveniently thrown out of engagement with the pins of said upper section, thereby allowing the ready adjustment of one section of said frame with respect to the other.
