Description

J. M. TAYLOR.
GUARD FOR WHEEL HUBS.
APPLICATION man NOV. 22, 1914.

JAMES M. TAYLOR, OF BURLEY, IDAHO.
GUARD FOR WHEEL-HUBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Application filed November 28, 1914. Serial No. 874,470.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs M. TAYLOR, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Burley, in the county of Cassia and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Wheel- Hubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheel hubs, and more particularly to that class of hubs which will prevent the accumulation of dust or other foreign matter from gaining access to the axle.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a hub which will allow a maximum amount of use with a minimum of greasing or oiling.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a closure for the axle which will prevent rain water or snow from reaching the axle and thereby prevent corroding of the same.
I attain these objects by arrangement and construction of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in the specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a wheel hub showing my invention applied thereto;
-Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the base sections.
The wheel hub designated by the numeral 1 is provided with the usual spokes 2. A metal sleeve 3 is arranged in the longitudinal central opening of the hub. The axle 4 is mounted in the sleeve 3 and is provided with a flange 5, the inner end of which bears against the end of the sleeve 3. The opposite end of the axle is provided with a nut 6 which holds the hub 1 upon the axle 4. The inner end of the axle is square, as shown at 7, and has mounted thereon the base member 8 which is provided with enlargements or flanges 9 and 10. This base member 8 forms a base for the housing of the axle at its inner end and is divided into half sections, each of which sections have the square channels 11 formed therein which fit snugly over the square portion of the axle.
For securely holding the base sections 8 upon the axle, I provide openings 12 through which bolts 13 are extended provided with nuts, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Mounted in the base member 8 at the small end thereof is the cupped disk 14, the inturned flange 15 of which retains the cylinder or dust band 16 in engagement with the hub at the inner restricted end 17 thereof. interposed between the enlargement 9 of the base member 8 and the cylinder or dust band 16 is a washer 18 of felt or other absorbent material. This washer 18 is further held in its proper position by the flange 10 of the base member 8.
From this construction, it is evident that after the axle is greased and the parts of this housing assembled in the manner described, an eflicient structure for preventing the entry of foreign or objectionable matter is obtained. The felt washer 18 takes up and absorbs any moisture which may leak from the housing, thereby preventing any corroding of the axle.
The outer end of the hub is provided with an internally threaded cylinder 19 which is secured to the hub in any desired manner. A closure or cap 20 is externally threaded and engages the threads of the cylinder 19 and effectively excludes the entry of dust, dirt, water, or other foreign matter.
I claim:
The combination with an axle having a squared portion and a collar and a hub provided with a band extending over the said portion, of a plurality of complemental base members having reduced extensions and circumferential flanges, said members having flattened portions on their outer peripheries to receive a means for fastening the members together, the complemented flanges being inserted within and being spaced from the band and hub, a cupped disk carried by the extensions and engaging with the band forming a pocket with the band, flanges and base members, and an absorbent washer arranged in the pocket.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
F. E. Wxomm, E. L. BOWLING.
