CHARLES ROY CROWELL, OF GREENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-HANGER.
' I Specification of Letters Patent,
Application filed March 8, 1916; Serial N0. 82,906.
moreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Door-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
The invention aims to provide novelmeans for mounting the door of the car for movement longitudinally of the car and for movement transversely of the car, whereby the door may be made to enter the door way in the car.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a portion of the outside of a car whereunto the door forming the subject-matter of this application has been applied; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a sectional detail wherein parts appear in elevation, the view depicting the means whereby the rear edge of the door is supported for movement longitudinally of the car and for movement transversely of the car; and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5-5 in In the drawings there appears a part of the side wall of a railroad car, denoted by the numeral 1 and provided with a doorway 2. Disposed above and below the doorway 9. are horizontal tracks 3 held apart from the door 1 by spacers 4L and attached to the car 1 by securing elements 5 passing through the spacers. The forward ends of the tracks 3 are inclined toward the wall of the car 1, adjacent the doorway, as shown at 6. Secured to the car 1 along the forward upright edge of the doorway 2 is a stop strip 7 against which the door (hereinafter described) Patented Feb. 6, 1917..
abuts, the door being adapted to fit in the doorway 2.
The numeral. 8 denotes a door for the doorway 2. Attached to the door 8 near to its forward edge, are open loop-shaped hangers 9 mounted to slide on the tracks 3. Mounted to traverse the tracks 3 and disposed adjacent the rear edge of the door 8 are open, loop-shaped hangers 11, provided with rollers 12 coacting with the tracks.
Each hanger l1 embodies a head 14 project- 'ing toward the car 1 and supplied with a dovetailed groove 15 disposed at right angles to the wall of the car 1. In the heads 14 of the hangers 11 are fashioned vertical passages 16, the functions of which will be made manifest hereinafter. v I
Mounted on the car door 8 adjacent its rear edge are brackets 17 embodying vertical Wings 18 between which the heads 14 of the hangers 11 are adapted to slide, in a direction at right angles to the wall of the car 1. The wings 18 of the brackets 17 define grooves in the bases of which are formed upright tongues 19 shaped to fit closely but slidably in the clove-tailed grooves 15 of the hangers 141.
The door 8 be moved transversely, and may be held within the contour of the opening 2 by any suitable means indicated at 23.
When the rear edge of the door is moved outwardly, in the manner hereinbefore described, the brackets 17 which are carried by the door 8 slide outwardly on the hangers 11 which are assembled with the tracks 3, the tongues 19 on the brackets cooperating with the dove-tailed grooves 15 in the hangers 11 to permit such an operation. The door may now be slid longitudinally of the car, into an open position.
It has been pointed out hereinbefore that the heads 14 of the hangers 11 are provided with vertical openings or passages 16 which communicate with the dove-tailed grooves 15. In the case of the lower hanger, these passages permit cinders or dirt which may have been accidentally lodged in the grooves 15, to drop out, when the rear edge of the door is moved outwardly. The passages need have no particular function, so far as the upper hanger 11 is concerned, but both the upper and lower hangers 11 are provided with the passages, in order to permit one form of hanger to be used both in the upper rear corner of the door 8 and at the lower rear corner thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class described, a hanger embodying a head having a substantially horizontal dove-tailed groove, the head being provided with a substantially vertical passage open at one end and communicating with the groove; and a bracket embodying a tongue shaped to fit in the dove-tailed groove of the hanger and slidably mounted therein, the passage in the hanger constituting an outlet for dirt pushed forwardly in the groove by the end of the rib.
2. In a device of the class described, a hanger including a hook-shaped portion and having a substantially horizontal head having a dove-tailed groove, the head being provided with a substantially vertical passage groove of the hanger and slidably mounted therein, the passage in the hanger constituting an outlet for the dirt pushed forwardly in the groove by the end 01 the rib.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of tWo witnesses.
CHARLES ROY CROWELL.
