Be it known tliat I-, A1'.viN BURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Park,in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Container-Core for Rolls of Paper and the like, of which thefollowing is a. specification.

This invention pertains to rolls of paper or the like, such, for instance, as rolls of roofing paper.

In preparing roofing paper for the market, it is generally the practice to form a hollow or tubular roll of the paper and to insert in the tubular roll a package or packages containing the liquid asphalt or other mixture to be used in laying the paper and containing the nails for fastening saidpaper in place. Thus it is seen that the labor involved in preparing the paper for the market in so far as the packaging of the same is concerned involves th'ewinding of the paper around a suitable core, removing the core, inserting a package of nails and another package of the liquid asphalt in the core space, and then plugging up the ends of the roll so that the packages of asphalt and nails will be retained inside of the roll.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal mid section of an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal mid section of the container core shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on line indicated by m m Fig. 1.

There is provided a hollow core comprising a liquid container 1 and a nail container 2, the bottom 3 of the container '1 also forming the top of the container 2 or partition intermediate of the ends of the core. The containers 1, 2 are shown as separate elements in the drawings telescoped for a por- 'tion of their length so as to form a cylindrical unitary core of uniform diameter.

The container 1 is provided with an opening 4; at its outer end closed by a suitable cap or cover 5 which may be screw-threaded or otherwise fastened in place. The container 2'is sealed at its outer end with a cover 6 which may be cut open with a canopener or the like when it is desired to use the nails 7 carried'by said container. The container 1 is provided with liquid asphalt S or any desired compound.

The core 1, 2 may be of any desired length and in Fig. 1 said core is shown approximately one quarter of the length of a roll 9 surrounding it.

The core 1, 2 may be provided with projections 10 at intervals therealong and therearound and said projections may be formed by punching out portions of the peripheral wall of the container with a suitable tool in a manner well understood in the sheet-metal working art.

In practice sheet material 11, such, for instance, as roofing paper will be wound on the core 1, 2 after said core has received the liquid asphalt and nails, and the projections 10 will prevent the core from slipping out of the core space 12 of the roll 9. lVhen suliicient sheet material has been wound on the core 1, 2, the roll 9 may be completed by wrapping the sheet material 11 in suitable wrapping paper 13.

From the foregoing it is seen that the containers for the liquid asphalt and nails are used as a core on which to wind the sheet material, thus dispensing with the operation employed previous to this invention of removing a core after the sheet material is wound thereon, and it is furthermore seen that plugging up the ends of the core space 12 to prevent the container from slipping out of the core space is entirely dispensed with owing to the means in the form of the projections 10 being provided.
