2 SHEETSSHEET 2- Egg /6 35: ZZ
Application filed April *7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Have P. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Falls, in the county of Pierce, State of l Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l iter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in miter boxes and has for its object to provide a device of this type constructed in such a manner that the/same can be readily disassembled for storage, and readily set up for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a miter box which can not only be disassembled but can be adjusted to cut the work at any desired angle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of saw guide for use in connection with the miter box.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 top plan view. Fig. 4 end view. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on 55 Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the saw guide.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the base which is supported by front and rear legs 2 and 3 respectively, the said rear legs having recesses 4 formed therein, and are further provided with set screws 5, the purpose of which will appear later.
The back 6 consists of sections 7, which are identical in construction, and are provided with extensions 8 at their lower edges, said extensions being adapted to engage the recesses 4, and are held therein by the set screws 5, thereby holding the sections at right angles to the base 1.
The rear legs 3 are continuations of the bars 9 which are fixed transversely of the base 1 and support at their forward ends the plate 10, said plate having a bearing 11 formed thereon. The adjacent vertical edges of the sections 7 are spaced a suflicient distance apart to accommodate the post 12,

which is provided with a longitudinal saw receiving slot 13.
A. cap plate 14 is provided and is substantially circular in contour, and has one of its edges provided with a. plurality of notches 15 which are spaced. The plate 14 is provided with diametrically disposed wings 16 which are provided with slots 17 for detachably engaging the extensions 18 formed on the upper edges of the sections 7, said plate being further provided with a bearing 19 in which is journaled the slotted trunnion 20 on the upper end of the post 12, said post also having a trunnion 21 formed on its lower end for engaging in the bearing 11 of the plate 10. Thus it will be seen that the post is rotatably mounted in the space between the sections 7. To prevent the exten sion 18 from disengaging the slotted wings 16 keys 22 are passed through said extensions.
A lever 23 is pivotally connected in the slot of the trunnions 21 and has a pin 24 carried thereby for engaging a selected notch 15. It will. be observed that the post can be easily rotated for cutting the work at different angles upon swinging the lever, after which it is dropped so that the pin 24 will engage the desired notch 15. The lever 23 not only serves as means for rotating the post, but also as means for locking the same.
A roller 25 is mounted in the lower end of the slot 13 and serves to prevent injury to the saw teeth should the saw move too far downwardly in the slots 13.
A saw guide 26 is employed and consists of a back 27, and depending spaced side plates 29, the rear ends of which terminate in depending wings 28, said wings having oppositely disposed shoulders 30 formed thereon for slidably engaging the opposite sides of the post 12, while the ribs 31 carried by the wings 29 slidably engage the grooves 32 formed in the walls of the slot 13. Since the guide 26 is slidable in the slot 13 it is obvious that the same will follow the saw downwardly. By providing the wings 29 and plates 28 saws other than the type known as stiff back saws can be used, it being of course understood that the saw is engaged between the plates 28.
What is claimed is A miter box comprising a Work supporting base, a back consisting of sections, said sections having their adjacent edges spaced,
a post rotatably engaged on the base and located in the space between the sections, said post having a longitudinal slot formed therein and having grooves'formed in its walls, aguide consisting of spaced plates for receiving a saw said guide having its forward end terminating in depending wings, vertical shoulders formed on the outer surfaces of the wings for engaging opposite sides of the post, ribs carried by the wings and disposed between the shoulgrooves.
In testimony whereof, I affix iny signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HANS P. MCDONALD.
