Description

F. H. HAINERT, JR.
TOY MUSTACHE.
APPLICATION FILED 00T. 5. 1915.
1 ,2l 43028, Patented Jan. 30, 1917.
lll @T1/@TF8 TOY MUSTACHE.
Application led October 5, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. HAINERT, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Mustaches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toy mustaches and has for its object to provide such a device made of thin rubber which may be inflated by a whistle held in the mouth to imitate an upstanding mustache, and which when dellated will imitate a drooping mustache.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one forni,-Figure 1 is a view of a person showing the mustache in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the inflated mustache showing the manner of application. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the deflated mustache and whistle drawn full size. Fig. fl is a sectional elevational view of the whistle.
My invention comprises, as best shown in Fig. 3. a whistle 10 to which is secured an inflatable rubber member 11. Whistle 10, as best shown in Fig. t, is made of two pieces of sheet metal 12 and 13 stamped to form a mouth-piece 14 which turns upward and rearward at 15, forming the contracted portion 16, and lastly projects forward again to form a stem 18 to which the member 11 may be attached. The pieces 12 and 13 are attached together in a seam 19. Within the contracted portion 16 is tightly stretched a vibrating member 17 which is acted upon in the customary manner by the air passing through the whistle to cause said member to vibrate and produce a sound.
The rubber member 11, as best shown in Fig. 3, has a neck 2O which fits tightly over the stem portion 18 of whistle 10. On both sides of neck 20 member 11 extends to form the tips 21 and 22, having the downwardlyextending portions 23 and 211 when the member 11 is inflated, thus leaving the section Specification of Letters Patent.

25 which comes directly under the nose of a size to just cover the upper lip. It will be noted in Fig. 2 that section 25 is of such a size that when member 11 is inflated it entirely obscures the whistle 10 from view. It becomes evident from this figure how the device is applied, and it can also be seen that the angularity of portion 15 with respect to portions 18 and 111 tends to bring the mustache close up to the face to closely resemble the desired article.
Figs. 1 and 2 besides illustrating the application of the device also indicate to some extent the personality that the device is intended to portray.
The toy is mostly spectacular, but, as previously stated, combines the feature of the whistle, which makes it doubly attractive.
I claim:
l. A toy comprising a hollow member adapted to be held in the mouth and having an upwardly offset portion positioned so as to lie close to the upper lip, and an inflatable sack of air-tight material removably secured to said member so that the same may be inflated and deflated.
2. A toy comprising a hollow member adapted to be held in the mouth and having an upwardly offset portion, an inflatable sack of air-tight material removably secured to said member so that the same may be inflated and deflated, and a whistle in the offset portion of said member to be sounded when the sack is inflated and deflated.
3. A toy comprising a relatively flat tubular member having'two oppositely-extended parallel stems and a transverse portion connecting the same so that when one of the stems is placed in the mouth the other stem will extend outwardly from the upper lip below the nose of the user, and an inflatable sack of air-tight material secured adjacent its center to said extended portion and of such shape that when deflated the sack will have the appearance of a drooping mustache and when inflated will have the appearance of an upstanding mustache, in each case being held properly positioned upon the upper lip of the user.
4. A toy comprising a hollow Z-shaped member adapted to be held in the mouth by In testimony whereof I affix my signature one of the bars of said Z, and an inflatable in presence of tWo Witnesses.
sack of air-tight material removably secured to the other bar of said Z so that the same FRANK H' HAINERT JR' may be inflated and deflated, said centra-1 Witnesses: bar of the Z being adapted to lie flat against F. A. WHITELEY, i the upper lip. H. A. BOWMAN.
