Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Jan. 30, 191?- Application filed June 28, 1915. Serial No. 36,683.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, RoBEnT C. DAXLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inve'nted certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetos, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ,electro-magnetos for use in connection with internal combustion engines wherein the charge of combustible fluid is ignited by means of an electric spark produced at recurring intervals by means of an electric current generated by a magneto deriving motion from a moving part of the engine mechanism and suitably connected with the ignition mechanism.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means whereby the magneto may be mounted upon the engine and connected with the ignition mechanism. and means separable from the magneto for imparting an oscillating movement thereof in opposite directions, said means being carried by a base member mounted upon a bracket, preferably integral with a flange member forming a part of a block having movable and fixed electrodes mounted therein, and secured to the cylinder head of an engine, the operative mechanism permitting a disconnection of the magneto from the ignition mechanism if for any reason battery current is desired, and transmitting motion to the rotor in a manner to eliminate any strains in a direc tion tending to cause the rotor to move bodily toward the poles of the field magnetand thus breakthe air gap between the armature and poles and thereby destroy the efiiciency of the magneto. These objects are attained by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of an engine cylinder carrying an igniter mechanism having my improved magneto connected therewith; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a. bracket member supported by the igniter block and having the rotor actuating mechanism mounted thereon; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of-Fig. 1: and Fig. 4: is a cross section of Fig. 1 along line AB.
Referring to the drawings, wherein the same reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views. 1 represents part of an engine cylinder, including a cylinder head 2, having an opening therein that receives av cylindrical block 3, having a flange & whereby the block is secured. to the head by means of stud bolts 5.
G represents an outwardly extending L- shaped arm, preferably integral with the flange i and having secured thereto a plate member 7 by means of bolts 8 and supported by the block 3 in substantially the same manner as is shown in Patent No. 820,535, May 15,1906, G. J. \Veber.
9 represents a rock shaft disposed parallel with the block 3 and journaled in bearings '10 forming part of the plate 7, and having oppositely disposed arms 11 at one end thereof. The arms are provided at their free ends with fork members 1:? spaced apart and receiving between them rollers 13 pro vided with annular grooves, one of said rollers being mounted upon a cross pin 14.- and the remaining roller upon a stud 15 having a collar 16 engaging with one of the fork members and a securing nut 17 with the coacting fork member, the stud extending beyond thecollar, and 18 represents a connecting link having one end journaled upon the extension of the stud.
' l9 represents laterally extending arms integral with the plate 7 and disposed upon opposite sides of the axis of the shaft 9 and in the same horizontal plane. and carrying at their free ends studs 20 disposed parallel with the axis of the shaft and having mounted thereon rollers 21 in line with and like in form to those designated by 1 and 22 represents tension springs having their opposite ends connected with the rollers and operative to normally resist an oscillating movement of the shaft 9 in a well-known way. Secured to the opposite end of the shaft 9 is a common form of trip arm '23 adapted to engage with a reciprocatory member 21' forming part of the igniter actuating mechanism. The igniter mechanism includes a fixed electrode 25 and an oscillating electrode 26 carried by the block 3 in a common way, and 2'? represents a coiled torsional spring operative in a direction to normally hold the arm 28 at the inner end of the movable electrode in contact with the fixed electrode.
29 represents an arm carried by the opposite end of the movable electrode and having at its free end an adjustable screw 30 that is secured in adjusted position by means of a locking nut 31, the screw being adapted to engage intermittently with an arm 32, preferably integral with the trip arm 3.3 represents a magneto detachably secured to the plate 7, including field magnets 3i secured to a frame 35, in which is jour naled a rotor 36, having an arm 37 secured to one end thereof, the free end of the arm being operatively connected with the opposite end of the connecting link 18, whereby motion is transmitted to the oscillatory rotor from the rock shaft 9 when it is actuated by the reciprocatory member 24: engaging with the arm and 38 represents a current transmitting connection between an insulated plug 39 on the magneto and the fixed electrode.
In operation the shaft 9 is oscillated by means of the bar 2-1, against the tension of the springs 22, that react to return the shaft to its initial position. and a tendency of the springs, in resisting a throw of the arm 23, to rock the shaft 9 in a distorted axial alinementis not transmitted to the rotor of the magneto, thereby permitting a free axial angular movement thereof. and a minimum air gap between the periphery of the rotor and the pole pieces of the magnet.
Having shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that changes may be made in the specific details of its construction and in the form and proportion of-its various parts without departing from the spirit ol the invention as indicatedfin the appeni led elain'is.
40 represents a cam disk integral with the shaft 9 intermediate the arms ll. and provided with a shoulder portion ll adapted to engage with a cocking latch 42 pivoted upon the plate 7 between depending ear members 43, and it represents a plate spring interposed betweenthe upper side of the latch and the bottom of the plate and operative to frictionally resist an angular movement of the latch in opposite directions. It is desirable to have the cocking latch 'arried by the bracket having the magneto, the electrode carrying block and other operative parts forminga unitary structure that may be readily detached from the engine cylinder for the purpose of testing the efficiency of the magneto in causing a satisfactory spark.
