Application filed January 21.1, 1916.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, RANsoM W. DAVEN- roar, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of `Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Combined Coalfand iGas -Ranges, of which the following is aspecilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to stoves designed for the alternative use of solid and gaseous fuel and the invention comprises various features of construction as hereinafter set forth.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the stove; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a transverse section; and Fig. t is an end elevation.
A is the oven, B is the fire-box having a fiue extending across the top of the oven, C is an end flue and D is a bottom flue connecting with the rear flue E, the arrangement being common to stoves of this type. T he oven A is also providedwith a swell or extension E at the back thereof which is bevond the bottom flue D.
F is a gas burner which extends longitudinally of the oven within the swell E and near the bottom thereof. This burner has forwardly-directed gas jets, and the flame therefrom is conned beneath a partition or false bottom G extending to the oven front.
llVith the construction as thus far described difculty has been experienced in lighting` the burner due to the formation of an explosive mixture of air and gas in the limited space between the oven bottom and the partition G. Thus even where a lighter extending to the front is provided for the burner, before this lighter can become operative from gas delivered to the burner the explosive mixture will be formed which will cause a puff or explosion of the gas. To overcome this difculty l have provided a lighter operable from the front of the stove and which is supplied with gas in advance of the turning on of gas to the main burner. To insure this sequence of operation independent valves are provided for the lighter and main burner, and the valve controlling the former produces a lock pre- Specicaton of Letters latent.

venting the prior actuation of the burner valve.
ln detail, H is the burner valve and l is the lighter valve, both of which are connected to a common gas supply conduit J arranged at the end and back of the stove. The handles for operating t' ese if'alves are preferably rods l and L extending to the front in a position for convenient operation.
M is a gas tube extending from the burner l into the oven and in position for coupling engagement with a lighter tube N which iatter is preferably secured to and beneath the removable partition G. Jiny suitable interlock is provided for compelling the actuation of tne valve in advance of that of the valve H, but as shown the stem of the valve l has mounted thereon a linger 0 which normally stands in the path of a iinger P on the stein L of the valve lf, the arrangement being suoli that the valve if may not be opened until the stem l has been turned sufliciently to remove the finger U, which operation opens the valve I and supplies to the lighter. l also preferably provide a connection between the operating stem L of the burner valve H, which controls an air valve or damper Q in the oven bach. This valve is normally closed when the gas is turned off, which prevents vent ing of the oven when operated by solid fuel, but whenever the gas burner valve is turned on the damper Q, is opened. This operation is effected by a rock-arm R on the stem L of the valve H, which on the opening movement of said valve engages a. rock-arm S on the rock-shaft T which forms the hinge of the valve or damper Q.
ln operation when the stove is operated by solid fuel the partition G is removed and with it is removed the lighter tube N attached thereto, so that the entire oven space is available for use. The damper Q is also closed to prevent any venting of the oven. `When it is desired to employ the gaseous fuel the partition G is placed in the oven, which will engage the lighter tube N with the gas tube M. The oven burner may then be lighted by first turning the handle or stem l of the valve I so as to supply gas to the lighter which may be ignited from the front. T he stem L is then turned to open the gas valve H which furnishes a supply of gas to the burner F, and the lighter, the inner end of which is in proximity to said burner, will instantaneously light the same preventing any formation of eX- plosive mixture of gas and air.
What I claim as my invention is l. In a stove, an oven, a gas burner eX- tending longitudinally of said oven at the rear thereof and adjacent to the bottom, said burner having forwardly-directed jet openings, a partition or false bottom engageable with said oven above said burner forming a limited space between the same and the oven bottom, and a lighter tube for said burner mountedI on said partition and removable therewith.
2. In a stove, the combination with an oven having a swell or projection in the rear.
wall thereof, of a gas burner extending longitudinally in said swell and adjacent to the oven bottom, said burner having forwardlydirected jet openings, a partition or false bottom for the oven engageable therewith above said gas burner, and a lighter tube connected with said false bottom and removable therewith.
3. In a stove, the combination with an oven of a burner at the rear of said oven and adjacent to the bottom thereof, a removable partition or false bottom engageable with the oven above said burner, a lighter tube mounted on said partition and removable therewith, and a gas supply tube for said lighter registerable and engageable therewith'upon the insertion of said partition.
4. In a stove, the combination with an oven, of a gas burner arranged at the rear thereof and adjacentto the bottom, a false bottom engageable with said oven above said burner, a lighter tube mounted on said false bottom, a gas supply tube registerable and engageable with said lighter tube upon the insertion of said false bottom, and independent valves for controlling the gas supply to said lighter tube and burner.
5. In a stove, the combination with an oven, of a burner arranged adjacent to the bottom and at the rear thereof, a false bottom engageable with the oven above said burner tube, a lighter tube mounted on said false bottom, a gas supply tube registerable and engageable with said lighter tube upon the insertion of said false bottom, independent valves controlling the gas for said lighter tube and burner, and an interlock between said valves for compelling the opening of the lighter valve in advance of the burner valve.
6. In a stove, the combination with an oven, of a burner arranged at the rear und adjacent the bottom 0f said oven, a normally closed valve controlling an air vent into said oven adjacent to said burner, a lighter for said burner, independent valves for controlling the gas supply to said lighter and to said burner, an interlock between said valves compelling the opening of the lighter valve in advance of the burner valve, and means operating upon the opening of the burner valve for opening said vent damper.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
