To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Lnwis E. YoUNrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pulleys and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the invention relates to sheaves which are formed of very hard metal such as manganese. It is desirable in pulleys of this type to provide the pulley with an oil chamber, which oil chamber is arranged around the hub and communicates with the bearing. lThe metal used for some of such pulleys, such as manganese cannot be worked so as to form a proper opening to such oil chamber.
The object of the present invention is to provide for such an opening in a better and more convenient form than heretofore.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure l shows a vertical section on the line l-l in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 a side elevation of a pulley embodying the invention.

In the walls 4 of the chamber 3 I arrange metal disks 8. For convenience and cheapness I ordinarily utilize plate steel punch chips. These as they come from the punches are practically scrap and have a slight roughness along the edge so as to make them ideal for the purpose. The metal is also such that it can be readily drilled to form the perforation 9 and tapped. In forming the oil chamber the pattern is formed and the core provided so as to make the walls of the chamber approximately th-e thickness of the punch chips. chips being of the same thickness as the walls can be inserted at any point which is convenient. Preferably the inserts are arranged slightly at one lside and along the outer periphery of the walls of the chamber as this forms the most convenient position for re-filling the oil chamber. To adapt the chips to this purpose, the chips are bent as shown in the drawing so as to conform to the curved surface of the outer periphery of the walls of the chamber. Where this is done, the chips as they are inserted between the core and the mold assist in holding the core in proper position. The wheel thus formed has an oil chamber with an insert or a series of inserts arranged in the periphery of the chamber and the surfaces of this insert both inside and out are flush with the walls of the chamber. This is of importance because the structure as a whole is smooth but in sheaves it is of particular importance because any obstruction or projection is liable to contact some adjacent part and thus interfere with the free running of the wheel. Any means of closing the opening 9, as the plug l0, may be used.
l/V hat I claim as new is l. In a pulley, the combination of a hub; and an oil chamber formed by walls of approximately uniform thickness extending from the hub, said walls having an insert of metal other than the body of the wall and of the same thickness as the wall with its inner and outer surfaces flush and in conformity with the surfaces of the wall, said insert having an opening therethrough.
2. In a pulley, the combination of a hub; and an oil chamber formed by walls of approximately uniform thickness extending from the hub, said walls having a curved portion and an insert in said curved portion of metal other than the body of the wall and of the same thickness as the wall with its inner and outer surfaces flush and in conformity with the surfaces of the wall, said insert having an opening therethrough.
